Jazz in the Park
This weekend, the North Beach Jazz Fest features two free days of amazing music in Washington Square Park. "Ladies in the Park" on Saturday hosts a stellar female line-up including pagan lounge ensemble Rosin Coven, Oakland gospel-soul singer Jennifer Johns, local Brazil-groovers Nobody from Ipanema and Los Angeles crooner Megan Jacobs. Also, make sure to catch Dub Mission's DJ Daneekah spin the breaks while Sterling James MC's. Then on Sunday, "Gentleman in the Park" takes over with New Monsoon, LEBO, and San Diego's On the One bringing some hot jams. This family affair is definitely one of San Francisco's summer treasures! Afrofunk Festival
After three consecutive sold-out years, the Afrofunk Festival is back again for three nights at Divisadero's indie rock spot, The Independent. For its fourth year, the festival expanded its dates and locations along the West Coast,. But remember: San Francisco is its hometown, the funkiest city of the tour! The B-Side Players headline Thursday and Friday, then Sila and the Afro Funk Experience bring their high-energy Afrobeat grooves on Saturday. Proceeds go to kids at the House of Hope in Uganda and Sila says "There's no way we can stop doing the Afrofunk Festival, as long as the crisis facing children in Africa continues." SF Theater Festival
This Sunday at the Yerba Buena Gardens, the San Francisco Theater Festival will feature 100 theater groups and solo performers, 14 stages, and 287 actors. This is the largest theater event of the year, showcasing many different styles: improv, musical theater, comedy, drama, solo shows, children's shows, and Shakespeare. And remember: it's all FREE! You can check out the program here; highlights include "Oh My Godmother!" the gay Cinderella musical, "Rambo: The Missing Years," "Shopping! The Musical," and a ton of improv groups. Bicycle Film Festival
As the oil war rages on and SUVs gather dust on dealership backlots, the world turns its collective eye toward a new hero: the lowly bicycle! In fact, our two-wheeled buddy is now so popular that he’s got his own international film festival. 17 cities around the world are participating in this four-day series, which includes films, an art show, club nights, and a big ol’ street party. Whether you’re a commuter, a day-tripper, a competitor, a stuntman or a bike clown, you’ll find representation here… so saddle up and let’s ride!
