4th of July Waterfront Celebration
Despite the touristy feel of Pier 39, there's nothing like a good 'ol 4th of July celebration on the waterfront to put some red, white and blue into your Independence Day. Enjoy a full day of activities and entertainment by the Bay including street performers, live music by the Big Bang Beat (1-4pm) and Tainted Love (6:30-9pm), and a spectacular fireworks display (9:30pm). There's no better place to get in the patriotic spirit this weekend. Show your love for America and make Lady Liberty proud, while having some good family-style fun by the Bay. Date: Saturday 7/6, Time: 1-10pm, Place: Pier 39, Cover: no cover, link More Info (EB)

Fillmore Jazz Festival
Without a doubt, jazz has had a huge influence on the music we listen to today. San Francisco's love affair with jazz flourished in the African-American community of the Fillmore District during the 1940s and 50s. Dozens of Fillmore Street jazz clubs attracted great talents from all over including icons Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and John Coltrane. Although those days are gone, the "Harlem of the West" lives on this weekend with three stages, art and crafts, and good food spanning 12 blocks of festival fun. Play it cool this weekend, daddy-o, and get hip to the jive! Date: Saturday 7/5 & Sunday 7/6, Time: 10am-6pm, Place: Fillmore St. btw Jackson & Eddy, Cover: no cover, link More Info (EB)

Intelligent Design
Lots of times when I go to a club I don't even bother to think about where the money for my cover charge goes. But tonight, Intelligent Design gives us all an opportunity to party with a purpose. Backing this event is NextAid, an LA based nonprofit dedicated to providing sustainable housing solutions for children orphaned by AIDS in Africa. Having already built 10 buildings featuring a community center and residential village, NextAid continues to help those less fortunate. And they're making it easy for you to help by rounding up DJs like Solar, Alland Byallo, Monty Luke, Laird and Amber, who have all donated their skills and time to help a good cause. At last, there's finally a way to feel good about a hangover. Date: Thursday 7/3, Time: 9pm, Place: supperclub, Cover: $10 w/ rsvp. link More Info (FR)

Bounce for the Obama Campaign
Whether you're a diehard Democrat or a party-swinger, odds are you've caught the Obama fever. And you're not alone: this Independence Day, SF shows its true-blue colors with the help of some mighty fresh beats from internationally-acclaimed DJs. Raoul Belman, one half of Swirl People, makes the only West Coast stop on his US tour just to celebrate "the audacity of hope"; backing him up are Carlos Mendoza from Lawnchair Generals, local house hero Olivier Desmet, DK Watts & Lance Leber (aka Short Bus Kids), and DJ Naz. The party will rage for 12 hours, and your $10 door donation goes directly to Barack's campaign. Now this is a political party I can really get into. Date: Sat 6/5, Time: 4pm-4am, Place: Otis, Cover: $10, link More Info (JH)
