The Bay Area has always been a hot spot for experimental radio, pirate stations, progressive DJs, music and political commentary. Nitevibe pays tribute to radio in this Buzz edition by highlighting some station-sponsored events and radio shows we dig. How about San Francisco’s very own dance music station KXJO 92.7, though a bit on the cheesy, it's a damn good start for a 24/7 dance format.

Does BFD stand for Big Fucking Deal? Because that’s what this event is. Live 105 broadcasts the best new music and alternative rock in around the Bay Area. SFLR Celebrates Nine Years of Liberated Radio!
San Francisco Liberated Radio or SFLR (93.7) is a micro station serving SOMA, Mission, Castro, North Beach /Chinatown and most recently the East Bay. SFLR started as a “pirate” station in May 1993 broadcasting illegally with music as well as social commentary. SFLR’s presence on the airwaves ended up challenging more than corrupt government systems, it helped inspire a movement of independent pirate stations that finally forced the FCC, in January of 2000, to change its rules prohibiting FM radio stations of under 100 watts in power. SFLR and similar stations have been battling Washington, the FCC and the National Association of Broadcasting for the right to “air” for years, it’s a constant fight. SFLR celebrates nine years with speakers, DJs and bands this Friday. Remember when Q-Tip from Tribe Called Quest asked, “When’s the last time you saw a funky diabetic?” Foundation is an event to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (a disease Q-Tip shares with other artists from Miles Davis to Neil Young). All the artists and DJs have donated their time and talents to help raise funds for this important cause. DJs include Dave Coleman & Sen Sei, Ellen Ferrato and Michael Anthony. The World of Thomas Campbell
The Luggage Store on the corner of 6th and Market St. does not sell suitcases. It sells (and shows) art. Underground-hipster-graffiti-artist, skateboarder-inspired-we-don’t-give-a-fuck-whatcha-think-art. The current show include three artists: Jo Jackson, Dave Schubert and one of my long time favorite painters, Thomas Campbell as they give you a colorful peek into their world. It usually consists of your Haight St. DJ posse who comes to nerd out on the finer points of electro. The dance floor is not packed making this a breakdancing practice spot waiting to happen.

Other melodic techno and breakbeat heads spin experimental beats as well as dancefloor friendly stuff such as samba-electronic mash-ups. The MechaSoul crew represents “sonic fiction - an expression coined by critic Kodwo Eshun to describe the stories told by songs of all music genres of the global black "digital diaspora" community. Much as Sun-Ra is to DJ/Producers Carl Craig or Blaze, there is a common ground and a polyrhythmic nature between all music forms that must be understood and heard by open ears. He was the first DJ to hold a number of residencies in New York, appearing at clubs including the Roxy, Twilo and the Tunnel; also a favorite among London crowds, he regularly spun sets at venues including Cream, Back to Basics and Lakota. This is the record release party for his new album, "Sounds You Can Feel."

Well I think the promoter Desi takes a sick pleasure in rounding up DJs who usually don’t appear on flyers together. This makes for a creative evening and a packed dance floor in the basement at Club Six. Eureka! It’s our Flyer of the week.

I thought the idea was a bit cheesy rave style for me but when I was in a small party town near Barcelona I gave it a whirl. It was soooo fun. At first you may feel silly but that’s really the best part. Everyone is having this silly, strange very tactile experience together on the dance floor. Dirty Vegas (who produced that song in the raver Mitsubishi commercial) headlines. Hey speaking of that, do you think the Mitsubishi car company knows that there was a world famous brand of ecstasy called Mitsubishi? Things that make you go hmmm.

Basically this party is going to feature whatever kind of music these guys feel like playing but I have a feeling there will be some 2-step, electro and hip-hop involved. Go figure. Monty Luke who you may have heard at the Hotel Ibiza’s Organic party will be playing the kind of bangin’ tunes that help you win softball games.
