Viva
la Radio!
The Bay Area has always been a hot spot for experimental radio,
pirate stations, progressive DJs, music and political commentary.
Nitevibe pays tribute to radio in this Buzz edition by highlighting
some station-sponsored events and radio shows we dig. How about
San Francisco’s very own dance music station KXJO 92.7,
though a bit on the cheesy, it's a damn good start for a 24/7
dance format.
Live
105 BFD #9
Does BFD stand for Big Fucking Deal? Because that’s what
this event is. Live 105 broadcasts the best new music and alternative
rock in around the Bay Area. Who else could possibly throw a party
and bring Papa Roach, Dieselboy, Cypress Hill, Paul Oakenfold,
The Strokes, Deep Sky, The Executioners and a dozen more together
in the same room? Ok, so that room happens to be the Shoreline
Amphitheatre but that’s not the point. Date:
Friday June 14th Time: 1pm-11pm Place:
Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, Admission:

SFLR
Celebrates Nine Years of Liberated Radio!
San Francisco Liberated Radio or SFLR (93.7)
is a micro station serving SOMA, Mission, Castro, North Beach
/Chinatown and most recently the East Bay. SFLR started as a “pirate”
station in May 1993 broadcasting illegally with music as well
as social commentary. SFLR’s presence on the airwaves ended
up challenging more than corrupt government systems, it helped
inspire a movement of independent pirate stations that finally
forced the FCC, in January of 2000, to change its rules prohibiting
FM radio stations of under 100 watts in power. SFLR and similar
stations have been battling Washington, the FCC and the National
Association of Broadcasting for the right to “air”
for years, it’s a constant fight. SFLR celebrates nine years
with speakers, DJs and bands this Friday. Date:
Friday June 14th, Time: 7:30pm –1am, Place:
Cell Space, 2050 Bryant St., Admission: $10 -

The
Cosmic Butt Kick
Week of June 3rd - 9th
Gemini:
Right now, you're eager to play the role of social butterfly
or, at the very least, the personable praying mantis. But before
you flutter out for a night on the town, make sure that you're
not committing a crime of fashion. Saturday night's Moon void
could show you that those low rise jeans were purchased in an
appalling moment of hip size ignorance. And perhaps you shouldn't
shop in stores with poor lighting, as that chic "Italian
leather" jacket is actually made out of Jersey vinyl. Avoid
being ticketed by the Fashion Police. Click here for other signs

Not just a party - a ritual. Martel, Nabiel and Dennise present
DJ's spinning house and world beats along with tarot card readers,

be chanting "light as a feather, stiff as a board" by
the end of the night (or at least the latter when you check out
some of the ladies at this party).

I checked out the rodeo last week when beat wranglers, Professor
Smith and Joe Rice were playing. I wore my cowboy boots but no
one else did. There was however, this guy wearing a head to toe
black PVC with a cape and flashing eyeglasses. Don’t worry
this is not the typical clientele. It usually consists of your
Haight St. DJ posse who comes to nerd out on the finer points
of electro. The dance floor is not packed making this a breakdancing
practice spot waiting to happen.

Kit Kat is the kind of spot where after parties run rampant. For
real. You could go to Kit Kat and probably not come home until

According to Woody Allen, there’s "Nothing sexier than
a lapsed Catholic." Sacrilegious features progressive house
and progressive trance from residents Fubari, Jelo and Robert
Harris. The main room features sexy, rare and leftfield chops
from Drei, Kleckern and the original Duserock. Party hard now,
so you have something juicy to confess later.
Event:
MechaSOUL

DJ's: Quela Robinson, Blaktroniks,
Megatron, Mikey J, Scott Edmonds, and Audio Angel on the mic.
Music: house, garage, 313-techno,
hip hop, breakbeats, experimental, samba
Cover: $5
This new monthly is on my to-do list. The first night (tonight)
features Quela Robinson. One of the rotating residents is Blaktroniks
who you may recall I said should have been part of Urb’s
next 100. Other melodic techno and breakbeat heads spin experimental
beats as well as dancefloor friendly stuff such as samba-electronic
mash-ups. The MechaSoul crew represents “sonic fiction -
an expression coined by critic Kodwo Eshun to describe the stories
told by songs of all music genres of the global black "digital
diaspora" community. Much as Sun-Ra is to DJ/Producers Carl
Craig or Blaze, there is a common ground and a polyrhythmic nature
between all music forms that must be understood and heard by open
ears. Deep Music for the Spirit…”

Why I ask?
But you didn’t hear me say that. Of course he’s great,

actually president of his fan club.

Blake Mathis, Ben Davis, David Garcia, Dawn of Sound
Music: funky house

Did you know Doc Martin used to DJ hip-hop around San Francisco?
Not much of a scratcher I hear, but more of a thoughtful selector
and that’s why he is so well respected around the world
today. He was the first DJ to hold a number of residencies in
New York, appearing at clubs including the Roxy, Twilo and the
Tunnel; also a favorite among London crowds, he regularly spun
sets at venues including Cream, Back to Basics and Lakota. This
is the record release party for his new album, "Sounds You
Can Feel."

The Summit asks you to please report to the monthly meeting of
beatheads who mix it up all night long spanning genres from dancehall
to drum n’ bass and electro. How do they do it? Well I think
the promoter Desi takes a sick pleasure in rounding up DJs who
usually don’t appear on flyers together. This makes for
a creative evening and a packed dance floor in the basement at
Club Six. Eureka! It’s our Flyer of the week.

You gotta do it at least once. Have you ever danced with hundreds
of people head high in foam? I thought the idea was a bit cheesy
rave style for me but when I was in a small party town near Barcelona
I gave it a whirl. It was soooo fun. At first you may feel silly
but that’s really the best part. Everyone is having this
silly, strange very tactile experience together on the dance floor.

Felix Stallings Jr. otherwise known as ‘da Housecat”
has come far from his early days as a 15-year-old Chicago DJ.
Today he's one of the most sought-after producers, DJs, and remixers
in the world. Dabbling in anything from house to techno to 80’s,
FDP does not give a fuck what you think. He’s super creative
and has remixed the likes of Garbage, The Pet Shop Boys, and Diana
Ross. I heard him mix in “Rockin’ the Casbah”
to a packed dance floor at the largest club in Miami and everyone
went nuts.

I love when that sarcastic bastard Chris Orr gets in one of his
clever moods. The most recent result would be this one-off event
called Big Pimpin’. The flyer features good ol’ boy,
President Bush in a cowboy hat with a ranch in the background.
Basically this party is going to feature whatever kind of music
these guys feel like playing but I have a feeling there will be
some 2-step, electro and hip-hop involved. Go figure. Monty Luke
who you may have heard at the Hotel Ibiza’s Organic party
will be playing the kind of bangin’ tunes that help you
win softball games.
