Bay to Breakers 2008
The famous Cross City Race started in 1912 to cheer up a town devastated by the '06 earthquake. Later dubbed the "Bay to Breakers," the race has become a treasured tradition and one of the largest footraces in the world. Over the last century, the race grew from its humble beginnings into a wacky, but serious competition with a big party tailing behind. The first costumed runners appeared in 1940 with the "Captain Kidd" who finished last, and Bobbie Burke who disguised herself as a man in order to compete. This Sunday's race will attract thousands of costumed participants and include other fun antics like the tortilla toss at the starting line, salmon swimming upstream, centipede racers, the "bare to breakers" letting it all hang out, and the Million Pirate March. Date: Sunday, 5/18, Time: race starts @ 8am, Footstock 9:30am-2pm, Place: starts @ Embarcadero & Howard, Footstock @ Polo Field in Golden Gate Park, Cover: no cover, link More Info (EB)

Metro Area brings back the experimentation of the early club classics, mixing live and electronic instruments. Simultaneously, the mood and minimalism of recent dance music creep into the mix: Detroit's cold futurism, Chicago's abstract track-modes, and the warmth of New York and New Jersey's deep house, hence the apt title of Metro Area, a team who will burn holes through your soles with Conor and Travis TK not far behind.
