SF's 10th Independent Film Festival
Despite the demise of classic San Francisco movie houses, and the growing number of dvds on your Netflix queue, Bay Area film lovers still love Independent films. Running 10 Years strong, the San Francisco Independent Film Festival has been declared the "real deal" by the Chronicle, and that the "SF IndieFest is what Sundance used to be but is no more". Consisting of parties, visiting filmmakers and (duh) films, the SF IndieFest carries on the free wheeling and artistic spirit that characterizes the Bay Area's love with alternative film. Dates: 2/7- 2/20, Place: Varies. More Info (JV8)

Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras

San Franciscans, those observant of Lent and not, definitely love a reason to party, and what better a reason to party on a Tuesday than Mardi Gras? Tonight, the Mission Neighborhood Centers, are throwing their own Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday Ball to raise funds for San Francisco's Carnaval in March, and also to hold preliminaries to crown King and Queen of Carnaval. Tonight's festivities will also be featuring Carnaval favorites such as Colombian dance band Aluna, the cabaret showgirls known as Hot Pink Feathers, and Brazilian bateria and dancers from Fogo Na Roupa. With a party like this, you won't miss what you're giving up for Lent. Date: Tuesday, 2/5. Time: 7:30pm, Place: Roccapulco Supper Club, 3140 Mission St, Cover: $15 advance, $20 door. More Info (JV8)
