Paul Oakenfold at Harlot
In case you missed last week's promo about Paul Oakenfold's visit to Harlot this Wednesday, you missed out on an opportunity to win a pair of VIP passes to hear one of club culture's greats in a small venue. After a hundred or so emails in response to last week's shout out, we received all sorts of compelling stories (and maybe even a provocative picture or two) as to why you should get a VIP badge to hear Oakie. After a tough decision process, this creative bunch (listed below) gets to bring a friend to hear one of the original rockstar djs in a once in a club-time experience. (JV8)

Biome
With all the activities and distractions that we take on throughout our days it can be easy to forget that we are just one species that occupies this blue planet of ours. One of the easiest and entertaining ways to remind us that we are an integral part of Earth's ecosystem is Capacitor's upcoming show, Biome. As a multidisciplinary art group of dancers, aerialists, visual artists and musicians, Capacitor incorporates scientific concepts with artistic expression in order to transcend cultural barriers and widen the scope of human experience. With Biome, Capacitor artistically reminds us that all living organisms are connected. Date: Friday & Saturday, 1/25-1/26, Time: 8pm, Place: Cowell Theatre, Fort Mason, Cover: $20-30 advance, More Info (JV8)

Event: Techno Tuesdays
Venue: 222 Club
DJs: ML Tronik, Justin Martin, Christian Martin
Music: tech house, techno
Cover: no cover |
One of the problems with listening to techno over the weekend, is that I'm left jonesing for more beats come Monday morning. Since the weekend is so far away, the next closest fix to get my dose of synthetic funk is Techno Tuesdays at 222 Club. Headed up by Dirtybird heroes Justin and Christian Martin, and Mothership recording artist and XLR8R columnist ML Tronik, your fix should be satisfied till the weekend comes. (JV8) |

Event: Beatropolis
Venue: Rickshaw Stop
DJs: Beatropolis, The Toy Soldiers, The Buttercream Gang
Music: d'n'b, downtempo, hip-hop, afro-beat, electro-rock, indie rock, post-punk
Cover: $8 |
Take a break from DJs tonight and get a dose of electro-rock that will put your faith back in live instrumentation. Beatropolis creates a heavy mix of basslines, downtempo, dub, drum 'n bass in their electro-acoustic sets. Their beats of the street sound like Roni Size doing tequila shots with Portishead, Tortoise, and Morcheeba - except without the training wheels. (EB) |
Event: Surefire Productions Presents
Venue: Shine
DJs: D1, Selector Dub U, JusWan and StayPuft
Music: dubstep
Cover: $5 |
18 year old producer, D1 makes piano look sexy. He may have been trained to play classical music, but ultimately it was the beat in dubstep that trained him. From 13 to today, D1 rummaged in London's dark alleyways and record shops, gathering grime and garage sounds. The result is a trippy, sub-bass pounding that makes even the best dubstep DJs want to hear more! (KS) |

Jan 24th
Venue: The Endup
DJs: Bon Johnson, Andrew Phelan, Eric Sharp, LadyHouse
Music: funk, electro
Cover: no cover b4 midnight; $10 after

Bon Johnson is rumored to be from the filthiest place on earth. On any given day you can find Bons in rabbit mink, swatch shields, and high-top shoes (tongues out). A Bon Johnson live show has been closely linked to antics seen at many a Rick James after party. A laundry list of fur.. glitter.. and of course Charlie Murphy. You can partake & share in the intensity of filth, funk and electro with Bons (of Bon Johnson) this Thursday night at The Endup. (FR)

Event: Batida Perfecta
Venue: Pink
DJs: Frenchy Le Freak, Antonio Guedes
Music: electro deep house
Cover: $10 |
Frenchy le Freak got his break when the DJ who was supposed to play was drunk. Out of pitch record players and spinning at high school parties didn't phase Frenchy. His love of house kept him going. Even his required navy tour didn't stop him from spinning at local clubs, but it did help turn his sound into a postcard of beats. By mixing latin, reggae, dub, and hip hop into house, Frenchy (a Nitevibe DJ Dreamteamer) makes the dancefloor feel like a trip around the world! (KS) |
Event: High On Hope

My favorite way to kick off the weekend is to start a day early and call in sick on Friday. There's a great new weekly Thursday party at Anu that's got me worried I may never make it to work on Friday. The party gets started early at 8pm and goes 'til late making sure we can all feed our dance-party craving! (EB) |
Event: Kid606
Venue: Club 222
DJs: Kid606, Silverlink, Lemonade, Peeplay
Music: Techno, IDM
Cover: tba |
This Venezuelan and now Cali native, Kid 606, will be droppin it like Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, mad kooky! He's been producing since the late 90's and is known as much for his producing as he is for his super cross genre mixing. Don't worry because everything from glitch to i.d.m. (Intelligent Dance Music) to high tempo break beats to just straight noise to mashups will be covered. Unlike many of his peers, he has pulled much of his inspiration from industrial music and death metal. Thus, this will be a textbook lesson in absolute sound destruction! (WF) |
Event: Meat
Venue: DNA Lounge
DJs: BaconMonkey, Netik, Ritter Gluck, Intoner

Now for something completely different, Meat is part dance club, part backyard barbecue from hell. This is not a vegan event, bring your appetite for industrial beats and fresh barbecued meat. From Chicago with love, the delectable Ron Trent will be playing a super special eclectic set of afrobeat, disco, classics and soul. Local Damon Bell will also be playing a similar vein of soul beats and latin oddities. Last but certainly least, JT Donaldson and Joshua (IZ) will be keeping it bumping and quirky. This will be an urban soundscape potpourri of the roots of house music and its spin off cousins. (WF) |

Evil Break-er Aaron Jae joins the ladies of Thirsty at Matador this week. He brings his gritty, bass-thumping breaks, which go well with the overall theme of house, techno and breaks. Denise, from Mizumo Music, gets down with her funky self with her house and techno tracks, while Amber gets in tune with her tech-y side as she drops the techno music. And last, but certainly not least is breaks diva Samira, bringing her own bass-heavy, dirty breaks. (CQ) |
