Release's
12 Year Anniversary Party.
Their call to arms - "Moving to the speed of sound"
and they've been moving us for 12 years. Release has undeniably
contributed to the foundation of the San Francisco electronic
music scene, but even before it started it's founders, Martel
and Nabiel, were crucial in the underground scene. People
tell me rumors about these two promotion geniuses throwing
illegal warehouse parties over a decade ago with bars set
up in an elevator in case the cops came by. That just makes
the elegant clubbing experience they now produce that much
more ironic and valuable. Release has brought every top DJ
in the world to San Francisco and because of M&N's dedication
to quality music and their ability to bring together huge
events with the vision and ease of throwing a house party-
Release will never go out of style. Check out the anniversary

The
Cosmic Butt Kick
Week of May 27th - June 2nd
Gemini:
These days, you're not just Gemini, you're the Supertwins. The
Sun in your sign continues to expand your horizons (not to mention
your ego.) Nothing seems out of reach, no matter how improbable.
Like Gary Condit, you'll truly believe that people will re-elect
you even after you are implicated in a young intern's disappearance.
Now that Chandra's body has been found, Condit is feeling increased
pressure. This week you'll emulate his apparently superhuman
ability to retain perfect hair under the most trying of conditions.

What mega-villain came up with this idea? The Rubber Curtain DJs are
coming to Sumo. Didn't you love those episodes when The Flintstones
met The Jetsons or Josie and the Pussycats shared an episode with Scooby
Doo? That was such the shit and this night will be too because the Redfive
crew hosts the Rubber Curtain posse for some truly unstoppable hip-hop
that will have the neighbors exclaiming," Darn those meddling kids!"

why not get back to the bare essentials of downtempo and melodic techno
- enjoy a collection of grooves that won't complicate your life. (This
review courtesy of our guest reviewer, Leavy who is measuring my office

Addicted is what this brand new weekly is hoping you'll be. I'm having
one of those psychic feelings about this, anyway. Tuesday night with
electro and hip-hop at Backflip will probably work out just fine. Take
a crew of people down there on the first night and claim your spot.

though. They live this secret life for a reason. No one likes to be
pegged as a certain style. The secret life of these hip-hop DJs involve
some funky ass Latin sounds, Brazillian and Afrobeat. Folks be getting
up at this no dance floor joint with hands in the air, yelling stomping
and freakin' just as the DJs planned. Now you know.

Anita Lofton and her crew are playing the music that you want to get
up to in the morning- soulful funky sing-to-me house. The Liquid clientele
always has some real underground characters. We like to get down and
don't care who knows it sorta crew. You can leave all that Prada bullshit

Venue: Butter
DJ's: rotating
Music: rock, metal, glam, house

I just thought I'd give you guys a break from the house reviews. So
I actually went to this nostalgic rocker night where yuppie types and
LA transports reminisce about their mosh pit days. Yes, the DJ did play
Judas Priest. He then played a song that I ended up arguing with three
people about who the band was. "Once Bitten Twice shy (baby)"
Is it Whitesnake? Ratt? Poison? To tell you the truth I can't remember
because I was really drunk BUT the point is, there were a few people
there really caught up in the debate, and doesn't that just epitomize
the whole scene?

Passenger
Venue: Skylark
DJ's: Paul Craven, Capitol A
Music: Future Jazz, Soul, Deep House, Brazilian,
Cover: Free
This night just won the best Thursday award in the SF Weekly. Word.
It won my "Bang for the Buck" award a month ago too. So do
you know who randomly showed up last week? House legend Kenny Carpenter
from NYC! It was specfuckingtacular. The place isn't packed but everyone
in there was seriously getting down. You never know what will happen
at Passenger - there is something to be said about a night with consistently
brilliant beats. Paul Craven knows his shit and it shows.
Event:
Eklektic/Hektic
Venue: Club Caliente (former VSF)
DJ's: Star Eyes, Eric Riggsbee, Method
One, FTD, Ms.E, MC Duh
Music: drum and bass, nu-skool breaks
Cover: $6
The address has changed but the hardcore junglists are still the same.
Back in the dizay (ok 4 years ago) this party used to go on at Enrico's
pizza joint. That superstar, UFO has now moved on to NYC but back then
was the resident making a nice little Saturday underground happening.
The party was thrown at an off-hour pizza joint for God's sake, it was
awesome. This party has now reincarnated itself once again moving from
Saturday to Thursday and from Catclub to The old VSF now called Caliente.
Apparently Mexican food is served and the venue has a mafia room? Expect
more drum n' bass/breaks madness than ever thought possible.

Kevin Yost is a jazz lover at heart. No doubt he's a genius. He comes
from a traditional jazz background studying keyboards and percussion
in college. He fused his jazz background with house music-that's not
just a DJ or producer but a talented musician. Coming from a town with
6,000 people in Bumfuck, PA he now travels worldwide playing at the
most renowned clubs. Some say he is one of most influential electronic
music producers of the past five years.

Venue: Storyville
DJ's: Lyracane (Stimulus & Dionysus,
NYC), Bas 1, Rasta Cue Tip, and Daniella
Music: hip-hop, dancehall
Cover: $10
True Skool promotes some of the most bomb hip-hop in SF. How appropriate
then that they should be hosting the Bomb Records Release featuring
Lyracane who have opened up for acts like the Jungle Brothers to De
la Soul. They do a weekly in NYC called "The Real Live Show"
where the two emcees are backed by a funky jazz band, which includes
Wynton Marsallis's bass player. Don't miss this rare appearance by some
truly talented east coast artists-they're coming up fast.

Twice

]
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Maxwell Implosion, Tom Thump
Music: downtempo, dub, breakbeats
Cover: $10
Twice as Nice is the type of party that Zero Seven drops by when they're
in town. (flyer in hand.) This actually occurred when they were here
for the KFOG show. What's more is that this edition of Twice as Nice
is a team effort with Blasthaus. So if you are one of those peeps who
like to be the first on your block to know music, check out the German
downbeat artist who calls himself Maxwell Implosion. Already gaining
popularity as producer of elegant breakbeat and house tracks, he has
also remixed international acts as diverse as Fantastic Plastic Machine
and Pizzicato Five. He has shared bills with acts like Dimitri From
Paris, the Cardigans (even Madonna asked for his DJ-talents this year
on her Berlin-After-Show-Party). On tour for his new release, "Small
Circle Of Friends" which is said to be "The perfect soundtrack
for relaxed afterhours. Jazz, Funk, Dub and Bossa Nova. every groove
tells a little story."

Gate Recordings "Worldwide" Record Release Party
Venue: Ten15 Folsom (basement)
DJ's: Laird, Larson, John Picket
Music: funky house, breakbeat

Tomiie (presented by 'GLOBAL UNDERGROUND'). Other DJs at Ten 15 include
Jonathan Ojeda, Mark Vane, Michael Anthony and Rafael.
Event:
Sneaks
Venue: Buzz 9
DJ's: Rasoul [ Cuts: 1
]
Music: house
Cover: $5
Sneaks usually happens every third Thursday but when Rasoul agreed to
play, they had to call a special emergency meeting of Sneak freaks.
Rasoul plays the house with the superfat BASS. He achieved acclaim early
on for his wildly popular releases on the seminal NYC house label Strictly
Rhythm. By the mid 90s he bounced to England playing to massive crowds
for the biggest promoters, including Ministry of Sound and Back to Basics.
In the late 90s he returned to the US to concentrate on production where
he now enjoys success with releases on Large Music, Guidance, Leaf Recordings,
Greyhound, Silver Records (France), and Naked Music, as well as his
own Soulfood Recordings.

Music: ghetto tech, hip-hop [ Site

Cover: $15 b4 11pm, $20 after
The ghetto-tech scene is a humorous affair. They have branded this new
hybrid of breakbeats, Miami bass and techno with the look and feel of
disposable hip-hop's bling, bling. The flyers always look like the cover
of a master P album with a little 2LiveCrew thrown in for good measure.
It started off being almost kitschy and ironic but has grown into quite
a movement. So the young prince of ghetto-tech, Disco D blesses us with
his turntable skills. Called a prodigy by both Urb and Mixer-he's kinda
the IT-DJ of the moment. Disco D has played along side Aphrodite, Stacey
Pullen, Mixmaster Morris, Derrick May, Carl Craig. He played the Beastie
Boys after party with Krush and Kid Koala.

became the 4th recipient of the Grammy award for Remixer of the

I honestly don't know anyone who has not visited the early morning T-Dance
at the Endup. I'm not going to insult your intelligence by assuming
you've never been there, so let's not consider this "a pick"
but rather a reminder. T-Dance is too special to be a pick, it's like
a special sacred refuge where hard core party people get to go when
nothing is left. You walk into the back deck and suddenly you are surrounded
by other insane people just like yourself. The sun is shining and it
all seems normal and right again. (Of course we all know it's not right
at all. Ha ha!)

Venue: Dalva
DJ's: Anna, Philip Sherburne
Music: hip-hop, breaks

I can't help but hear the theme from "COPS" when I heard about
this new party. Apparently this is "where the rough come to tumble"
and it goes down every Sunday with your resident selectors DJ Anna from
(Future Primitive Sound Session, Beta Lounge) and Philip Sherburne (Trouble,
Charlie Don't Surf) and a rotating cast of sketchy characters, recent
parolees and thugs on the lam playing the music that your mom warned
you. Are you brave enough to you take sides in the cop/pimp turf war?

BIG UP to Dubmission for doing this night for nearly six years now!
Always a reliable place to hear roots and dub. This is no casual slack
party, Sep and the crew are hosting some of the biggest and progressive
soundsystems on today's scene. Last week Holland's Twilight Circus Dub
was there celebrating the release of their dub plates. The famous Blood
and Fire Sound System has also been by. This party brings you the latest
news from the dubworld for a minimal price. All you really need to do
is pay attention!
