De La Soul
Whatever you are doing Thursday night – drop it. For the
one, the only, the inimitable De La Soul is in town to rock San
Francisco with their time-tested, experience-honed, still-fresh-after-all-these-years
style. De La Soul got their start with 1989’s 3 Feet High and
Rising and, like the title of that fateful CD, they just kept heading for the
top. Hailing from Long Island, these three New Yorkers created
a more low-key, gentle sound by drawing on everything from funk, soul, pop, and
jazz to reggae and psychedelia. That mix, combined with their ability to craft witty
rhymes and inject a light goofiness, made them one of America’s
most eclectic and unique acts then and kept them loved by many right through to now. Date: Thursday 11/8, Time: 9pm-?, Place: Ruby Skye, Cover: $10 presale, More Info. (EK)

Video Makes the Radio Star
Some time ago, The Owl Mag launched the “Video Makes the Radio Star” Youtube
contest and fielded entries from bands eager to get their music, and their faces,
heard and seen. Skip forward to now and Maldroid, Magic Bullets, The May Fire,
Music For Animals, and The Ian Fays have emerged victorious. Even better? You
can see the bands play live, for free, at the Mezzanine tonight. Plus, while
the winning videos screen and the awards are handed out, Aaron Axelsen will be
hitting the decks to get all you dancers movin’ and groovin’. Sound like a rockin’
good time? Then put on your dancing shoes and get ready to clap
for the bands, and the excellent music, all night long! Date: Saturday 11/10, Time: 8pm-?, Place: Mezzanine, Cover: No cover w/ rsvp, $10 door, More Info. (EK)
Wings With Hope
I'll admit that sometimes I can be a tightwad when it comes to donating money, but Wings With Hope makes it hard to say "no". Tonight's fundraiser for the Hope Flight Foundation makes it easy to loosen up those purse strings. Hope Flight is a non-profit that provides free air transportation to children in need of medical attention and, if that wasn't cause enough to donate, they've added a few things to spice things up, including DJ Dreamteamers Taj & Dirtyhertz and local faves M3 & Didje Kelli food from Oola and Blowfish, and a silent auction. Verdict: this party will leave you feeling good inside and out for donating. Take my money, please! Date: Sunday 11/11, Time: 6pm-12am, Place: 111 Minna, Cover: donation. (JV8) More Info

Event: Mos Def
Venue: Mezzanine
DJs: Mos Def, Big Von
Music: hip-hop
Cover: $15 presale |
For the uninitiated: Mos Def is a must-see artist with a
must-listen catalogue of critically-acclaimed and insightful hip-hop that has
been credited with taking the genre “back to its soapbox roots.” Combine that
with his award-winning work in movies like Something
the Lord Made and as half of Black Star (with the also-excellent Talib
Kweli), and you’ve got a star that, while already made, just keeps on making. (EK) |
Event: Satellite Wednesdays

DJs: Alland Byallo, Craig Kuna, Scott Carrelli
Music: techno, minimal, tech house
Cover: no cover b4 10pm, $5 after |
Starting their own techno movement with Greg Bird wasn't enough for Alland and Craig - they felt the city needed good bass-pumpin', minimal, and glitch-sounding techno. The [KONTROL] party began as a monthly project but soon turned into a weekly event and with a float at Lovefest, it looks like they've given the city a techno makeover. Being invited by Scott Carrelli to play his progressive Satellite party can only mean that minimal techno with progressive house can live happily side by side. (FR) |
