Castro's Non-Party
And so it is: The great Castro Halloween party is now the late, great Castro
Halloween party. After the violent conclusion to last year’s street bash (nine
people were shot), the city has taken a hard line and officially closed down the shindig, marshaled hundreds of cops to control the area on Wednesday night,
and launched a PR campaign to divert revelers away from the area. Suffice to
say that if you head over there, you won’t be seeing the free-wheeling
debauchery of yesteryear. So what to do? Have no fear – this being San
Francisco, there are tons of Halloween parties at which to get wild in our natural habitate,
including Ruby Skye’s Transylvania spookfest, Keoki at supperclub, Miguel Migs & Lisa Shaw at Mighty, Underground SF’s A Halloween
Bloodbath 666, and Pink’s Halloween shindig,
among others. Read on for the many frighteningly fun options. (EK)

Style Wars
The clothes in Style Wars may be pretty, but the fashion-fighting can get downright
ugly. That's because the stakes are high in this battle of the thread, which involves eight
contenders going head to head in an effort to create fast fashion that is gorgeous
and edgy enough to snag the coveted title of San Francisco Style Battle
Champion and $1,000 in cash and prizes. The House of Diehl (which Vogue has
called “punk meets Warhol”) is presenting this fashion mashup challenge (think WWD meets WWF) thusly: competitors must craft an outfit, live on stage, in
minutes, by destroying and rebuilding clothing with cuts, tears, burns,
spray-paint, or any other method they can come up with. So break out the big guns,
designers – this means war! Date: Saturday 11/3, Time: 9pm-2am, Place: 111 Minna, Cover: $8 presale, $12 door, More Info. (EK)

ARTumnal Gathering Gala
The Black Rock Arts Foundation has a special knack for making their charity
functions some of the wildest, rather than the driest, parties of the year. And
with it’s parade of elegant and outlandish live bands, performers, musicians,
dancers, aerialists, contortionists, stiltwalkers, and living works of art,
including performances from Afrofunk Explosion, Dr. Abacus, Fou Fou HA (“mayhem-making
and dance shenannigans”), Dan Cantrell & His Balkan Orchestra, Kerri Kresinski
& Sweet Can Productions (aerial and circus arts), Kitten on the Keys, Samantha
(belly dance), and DJ Adnan (world house beats), the ARTumnal Gathering
is no exception. Between the enticing entertainment and noble goal – to fund
the foundation’s mission to “inspire art, community and civic participation” – this
event is sure to gather quite a few partiers looking to do their part. Date: Saturday
11/3, Time: 7pm-1am, Place: The Lodge
at The Regency Center,
1290 Sutter, Cover: $150-250, More Info. (EK)
