Tiësto: Elements of Life Tour
The day is now upon us and, after weeks of anticipation, Tiësto is finally here in San
Francisco. This Holland superstar has earned the hype: not only was he the first DJ to
sell out events for over 25,000 people two nights in a row, but he’s also played
in front of billions at the Olympic Games
opening ceremony in Athens, a remix of his became the first house track ever
broadcast on daytime radio in North America, and Traffic was the first instrumental track to reach the top spot in his homeland in 23
years. And that’s just the basics – he’s also won numerous awards, pioneered
the trance scene, constantly evolved as an artist, and stayed true to his
craft. Long story short: he’s a veteran that’s fresher than ever. If that's not enough - you're treated a the supporting cast all headline in their own right - Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Doc Martin, Uberzone (Live), Hyper, Lee Coombs, Baby Anne (Feat. Darling Nikki), Deep Voices (Feat. Dyloot) Date: Saturday,
7/28, Time: 9pm-3am, Place: Bill
Graham Civic Auditorium, Cover: $65 presale, $75 door, More Info. (EK)
Afrofunk Music Festival
The Afrofunk Music Festival is returning for a third year
after two consecutive sold-out extravaganzas and Nitevibe, for one, couldn’t be
happier. Not only does this year’s festival benefit Save the Children and
feature a wide diversity of cultures and traditions, but it includes what
everyone can always use more of: extra funk! The roster is jam-packed, with
everyone from Sila and the Afrofunk Experience (gritty, hard-hitting James
Brown funk) to Baba Ken and the Afro-Groove Connexion (Nigerian Juju music and
Afrobeat rhythms). And the list doesn’t stop there, with appearances by Afrobeat
Down, DJ Jeremiah and the Afrobeat Nation, DJ Emmanuel Nado, and DJ Boima. Date:
Friday 7/27 – Saturday, 7/28, Time: 9pm, Place: the Independent, Cover: $17, $45 VIP, More Info. (EK)

North Beach Jazz in the Park
All-stars and world flair will be in abundance at a full day of free Jazz Fest music in Washington Square Park. North Bay reggae
heroes Wisdom will make their first NBJF appearance, followed by Bay Area Latin
acid jazz legends Los Mocosos, who are sure to have the crowd jumping with
their upbeat grooves. Salvador Santana will follow in his
father’s rockin’ Jazz Fest foot steps and San Francisco’s own Albino! will make waves by channeling Nigerian
legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Not enough? New York's Stephane Wrembel is sure to blow you away with his immense
similarity to the late, great Django Reinhardt, while Sterling James plans to delight your ears with a fresh and funky set. Date: Saturday, 7/28, Time: noon-?, Place: Washington Square Park, Cover: no cover, More Info. (EK)

Northwest hip-hop is going national as a result of MC X-Kid, a hip-hop visionary with rhymes to spare. The twist to this show is that X-Kid's hustle and flow will be documented as part of a "reality-style movie project" in support of his new album. The man and the cameras will be joined onstage by Delinquent Monastery, Alpha P, the Pirate Signal, Hollywood Kill, and Big Homie, so go to get rowdy (and be filmed doing it). (EK) |

"I love Fruity Pebbles when I'm watching my cartoons." Never have truer words been spoken. That's the best part of listening to DJ Z*Trip's music, you never know what to expect --quick beats with fast-talking raps, random cartoon/cereal pop culture references with comical beat-boxing,or even haunting lyrics with melodic undertones. Funny, serious, or whatever you're looking for, Z*Trip will oblige. Packing heat with many collaborators from the last album, this will prove to be a not-to-be-missed show. (JH) |

Order, a band that itself went on to shape popular music. And then? Ruby Skye scheduled Hook to play a DJ set that you will attend. This man is history, people. (EK) |
