Propaganda III
If just watching the fireworks and waving a flag around just isn't enough for you to declare this year's holiday celebration one for the history books, Propaganda III could very well be your ticket to a more meaningful and memorable holiday. START SOMA Gallery's exhibition of international modern propaganda posters features works by over 300 artists, and debuts here in SF before embarking on a tour of 25 (and counting) cities across the globe. The bold, striking graphic artworks depict many a struggle for justice, freedom, and peace, and the collection appeals to a diverse set of viewpoints and a wide range of emotions. The journey across time and space found in the collection of posters gives the Fourth of July holliday more context and will broaden your perspective. Check out the flickr gallery, then come to the Phoenix Hotel this Wednesday to experience the uncensored, uncurated collection of works, while relaxing with barbecue and music by the pool. Date: Wednesday 7/4, Time: 2pm-6pm, Place: The Phoenix Hotel, 601 Eddy St, Cover: no cover, More Info (DKD)

Fourth of July at Pier 39
Forget the tourists – Pier 39 gets some local love this July 4th with appearances by two popular San Francisco acts. Big Bang Beat starts the party right with their signature blend of very nearly everything. While the band itself is big (and sequined!), their repertoire is bigger – this “ultimate party machine” plays ‘40s swing, ‘60s Motown, ‘70s disco, ‘80s pop, and just about any other genre of music you might be able to dance to. The hits keep on coming when Tainted Love takes the stage at 6pm, but where Big Bang Beat is varied, Tainted Love is focused, focused, focused – on the ‘80s. After some righteous shredding from Tainted Love and serious dancing in the dark from you, Fisherman’s Wharf will focus skyward for a dazzling fireworks display. Date: Wednesday 7/4, Time: 1pm music begins, 9:30pm fireworks display, Place: Pier 39, at corner of Beach Street and the Embarcadero, Cover: no cover, More Info. (EK)

Diverse City
111 Minna may remind you of happy hour, but it's a great place for a DivinitySF benefit. A benefit that has a fully loaded lineup, and an unshakeable desire to rock the 2 big sound systems, along with the dancefloor, like they've never seen. The groovers and bass-lovers will have a memorable night, but the party is even more intent on benefitting the SVDP Feed the Homeless Fund, which helps to feed homeless and less-fortunate families in the Bay Area and primarily in SF. It's only $10 to get in, so see if you can donate further, as the door will be accepting donations of canned food, jackets, blankets, toys, and anything else that could be of use to someone without much. Two dance floors will come alive with the sick beats dropped by are Syd Gris, Aaron Jae, Aaron Pope, Still Rob G, J-Rod, Ace Tatsu, Kimani and DjGUNZ, Shabadoo and the Electro Pirates. You'll hear it all from breaks to electro, progressive and trance, and have fun getting downright nasty to all of it. Date: Friday 7/6, Time: 9pm-2am, Place: 111 Minna Gallery, 111 Minna St @ 2nd, Cover: $10 donation, More Info (DKD)

Wild in the Streets
5,000 skateboarders taking over the streets Wed, July 4th 2007. Emercia, a So-cal based skateboard company, has decided that this years' city to skate through in celebration of freedom is going to be none other than our city of San Francisco. Last years events were held in the streets of Chicago and New York, which was said to be a peaceful demonstration. They have hopes this years event will help skaters from around the world, and most importantly local skaters to get some more "love" from the citiest Finest. SF has some of the best "street" terrain for skaters. But, they also have some of the harshest laws banning skateboarding in public areas. This is an event to raise much needed interest in building more skateboard parks here in SF, and to gain more respect and support for the citys' skater population. To find out more details on "Wild in the Streets" check out Emerica's website . Date: Wed 7/4, Time: 2pm, More Info (Katie Callahan)

Why does “having a short fuse” have to mean: “gets pissed off easily”? This Independence Day eve the folks at Green Gorilla are striving to change the definition of short fuse to “makes you shake it”. That shouldn’t be to hard to do when some of SF’s finest underground DJ’s drop a bumpin' mix of disco house and twisted funk. No reason to get pissed off here, you’ll be too busy shakin’ it! (DJ)

When a live PA performance includes a full drum kit, synths, and hanging light-up drums, is often compared to Uberzone's live show, and is paired with the name Carbon Community, it means you are an absolute fool to miss out on it. Dave Cannon aka Carbon Community is no stranger to performing for an SF crowd, but his live shows with drummer Pete are rare and well-remembered. With the Sister SF, Deep End, and Ambient Mafia crews also representing at this Evil Breaks events, the fireworks you'll feel at this party are the perfect way to kick off the holiday. (DKD) |
