Filmore Jazz Festival
San Francisco plays home to many things – some wonderful - World Class Music, some not so wonderful (effing pigeons…). One of the more wonderful San Francisco offerings is the Fillmore Jazz Festival, the largest free jazz festival on the West Coast and, more importantly, an event dedicated to bringing in excellent jazz musicians from across the spectrum. This year is no different, with acts like the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, a 16-piece Bay Area ensemble, Sila and the Afrofunk Experience, a Swahili and English-singing funk pioneer, the energetic and energizing Brass Mafia, Mazacote, a “hard-core salsa and latin jazz band," and the dance-friendly Vinyl, which plays a mix of funk, Latin percussion, reggae and R&B. There will also be an array of delicious food offerings, so head on down to Fillmore Street to get your fill of everything. Date: Saturday 6/30 – Sunday 7/1, Time: 10am-6pm, Place: varies, check schedule, Cover: no cover, linklinkMore Info. (EK)

Atavistic
Club Six is hosting Atavistic, a print show and sale that isn't your normal art show, as the artists creations express a love for heavy metal in a wonderfully nightmarish way. First we have three graduates from The California College of the Arts, Carl Auge , David V. D'Andrea, and Jeremy Forson . Carl Auge uses oil on canvas to paint pieces that are not always happy but tell a genuine story. David V. D'Andrea depicts the transition of life into death with pain and skeletons, while Jeremy Forson uses skulls, faceless images and snakes to create his metal-loving pictures. Stephen Kasner, who's had show with David, uses ink and mixed media to create his printwork. Adding music to this gothic event are Giant Squid and the Saviours , bringing that doom metal soundtrack to finish off the night. Date: Friday 6/29, Time: 7pm-2am, Place: On Six Gallery, 60 6th St, Cover: free b4 9pm, $5 after, linkMore Info (CQ)

Pandora's Trunk
Confront your fashion demons! Pandora’s Trunk, a bimonthly art and fashion showcase, is back and looking to get madder than ever. Stop by the Mina Dresden Gallery to take part in Versus, which tackles the eternal battle between good and evil…in art. First, artists will present work crafted using materials ranging from paint, fabric, metal, and wood to string, spit, and bubblegum. The night gets tricky (and the “versus” comes in) when you must pick sides and put ‘em up by talking the artists into selling you their work. Each transaction will grant you a pass to win or lose in the name of whichever side you are on. And don’t worry – the live music, free drinks, and merriment are for winners and losers alike. Date: Saturday 6/30, Time: 2-7pm, Place: Mina Dresden Gallery, 312 Valencia @ 14th, Cover: no cover, linkMore Info. (EK)

When a musician begins to take him or herself too seriously, they jump on the fast track to Crapville (what’s up MJ!). Luckily, we have characters like Biz Markie, who has made an entire career out of defending a rapper’s right to be silly. Though Biz has recorded songs like “Pickin’ Boogers,” you’d be a fool to underestimate him – not only does he have a top ten single under his crazy belt, but he’s been spitting rhymes since before you were born.
