North
Beach Festival
It's
the 53rd Annual North Beach Festival and flying pizzas,
animal blessings, and arts and crafts galore are only the
beginning of what will surely be another celebration thousands
will spend gallivanting around the district gleefully in
a spirit of reckless abandon. Highlights include world champion
pizza tosser Tony Gemignani throwing dough to celebrities,
Italian street chalk art, and an interactive New Recycled
Art Presentation by Sculptor Terry Marashlian. The festival
showcases a diverse line-up of musical performers playing
everything from alternative rock to Latin rock, reggae, swing,
and salsa, and you'll enjoy juried arts and crafts as
well as the taste of fine cuisine. Don't miss out on this gem
of SF. Date: Saturday 6/16, Time: 10am-6pm, Place: Washington

San
Francisco Black Film Festival
From
a city of excellent film festivals comes another compilation
of must-sees – though the ninth annual San
Francisco Black Film Festival kicked off last week, it’s
back on Thursday for four more days of pure independent goodness.
Of particular note is the impressive line up of documentaries – make
sure to check out Live from Tent City, which chronicles
the 2006 city-wide campouts that Richmond, CA citizens launched
to protest rising local crime rates, the heartbreaking refugee
saga One Story, and Silences, about director
Octavio Warnock-Graham’s search for genealogical truth.
The SFBFF also brings out Hollywood heavyweights in a film starring
Vanessa Williams and at an awards ceremony honoring the endlessly
versatile Barry Shabaka Henley. With an associated film
and music conference presenting live performances, workshops,
and panel discussions, the SFBFF raises the film festival bar
to a whole new level. Date: Thursday, 6/14 – Sunday,
6/17, More

I Hate
You, a Love Story
Love
and affection are difficult
enough to make sense of when your feet
are on the ground, but this dark comedy
brought to the stage by Acrosports' City
Circus takes the ageless enigma to
quite another level. 30 feet high in
the air in fact. The show is performed
by professional teenage circus performers
who implement stunning acts of aerial
performance, contortion, juggling,
hand-balancing, body percussion, acrobatics,
and clowning to tell the story from
their oftentimes lofty point of view.
Carlos Aquirre aka Infinite of Felonious
Hip Hop will beatbox live to form the
soundtrack, so your ears are sure to
be as tickled as your eyes are dazzled. Date: Friday
6/15 - Sunday 7/1, Time: Fridays
7pm, Saturdays 2pm, 7pm, Sundays 2pm, Place: Brava
