Bay
To Breakers
Costume?
Check. 'Refreshments'? Check. A mobile stage/prop/dispenser/chariot
that can be hauled uphill on Hayes? Check. Running shoes? Check.
Wait, running shoes? Oh yes, it's that time of year again. Time
for the rip-roarinist rolling caricature of a road race ever.
Sure, there are some people that take Bay to Breakers very seriously
and train to win this time-honored race from the Bay side to Ocean
Beach. But those people are crazy. I'm going to be with the sane
people, you know, the ones in togas, or dressed as diaper-equipped
homicidal astronauts. If you've never seen or 'ran' in Bay to
Breakers, you're missing out on one of the last obscenely San
Francisco-centric events that hasn't been parodied, commercialized,
or upended by politics into some pale shadow of itself. It rolls
through the city and up towards Divis before careening madly into
Golden Gate Park where every grassy knoll, underpass, and clearing
becomes an impromptu dancefloor party spot. They are making a
valient push to reduce the epic amounts of trash and debris, so
try to be smart and don't trash the city that makes this unforgettable
insanity possible. Date: Sunday 5/20, Time:
Race starts at 8am, Place: See

At their inception in the late nineties, the
New Deal was just that. Originally formed as an acid jazz band,
the Canadian group quickly incorporated electronic elements and created
a new sound at the intersection of jazz and electronica, a livetronica
genre they would call live progressive breakbeat house. Though not
so literally "new" these days, the New Deal is certainly still as
talented, innovative, and skilled in synthesizing the best of both
the jam band and electronica worlds. (EK) |
