Yuri's
Night
Most of us were born too late to witness the heady days of the
space race, but space remains the final frontier and has a magic
that will long outlive its first human explorers. Yuri's night,
in honor of Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's inaugural space flight in
1961, reconnects us with the past while shedding light on the
incredible possibilities and sense of wonder than only outer space
can provide. Technology, science, history, art, and mind-blowing
sound come together under the massive roof of NASA's Hangar
211 at Moffett Field. A familiar vibe of underground sights
and sounds will come courtesy of the Unimog, the Glitch Mob, special
guests Plaid with Bob Jaroc, Telefon Tel Aviv, Bluetech, Rabbit
in the Moon, as well as some seriously cool technological wonders
and feats that are sure to surprise even the most jaded interactive
junkie. Toss in a few actual astronauts and all your best friends,
and you've got yourself one hell of a party that's truly a step
into the future. Date: Fri 4/13, Time: 6:30pm -
late, Place: NASA
Ames Hangar 211 (Moffett Field, Mountain View), Cover:

hi/lo
Film Festival
If you've ever hated a Hollywood blockbuster (hello every single
person in the world), then the hi/lo Film Festival is the answer
to the question you didn't know how to ask. As hi/lo explains:
"$40 million can kill a good idea. Not only that, it can torture
a good idea's family and key its car." Going on this premise,
all films are "high in concept and low in budget" (as well as
short in length). The result is a roster that ranges from the
sweet to the surreal, with everything in between. Amar,
a Spanish film about two lovers who exchange sexual identities,
shares billing with Sideshow, an animated foray into the
mind of a retired clown. The festival also serves up shorts about
drama pirates from the future, bathroom etiquette, and Robert
Oppenheimer. Date: Thurs 4/12 - Sun 4/15, Time:
varies, check schedule,
Place: Brava
Theater Center and Parkway
Theater, Cover: $8-9, festival pass $20,
