Do you remember
when you first realized how crucial it is to get out on the dance floor
and shake your ass? I'm not talking about your 7th grade tap recital.
I'm talking about when you went to a party, club or rave, maybe took
e, maybe not but either way the music struck a cord in you, and you
danced longer and harder than you ever have in your life. The kind of
dancing where your head is completely clear and you're feet are moving
by themselves. I'm talking about the kind of dance when you realize
"this is my style, this is how I move naturally." To the outside world
you may have looked like Rerun from "What's Happening" but inside, your
soul woke up and yelled hallelujah! This is why we're celebrating National
Dance Week.
We know
you get a workout raving at the clubs, but in case you want to expand
your dance routine, here are a few refreshing events. For a complete
guide check out www.voiceofdance.com

The Cosmic Butt Kick
Week of April 29th - May 5th
Taurus: You're developing
a major case of lurching loins. You could be painfully attracted to
someone who isn't your usual type. Multiple signs in Gemini are urging
you to join forces (or fluids?) with your exact opposite. Perhaps
it's time to seduce a nerdy character who has a steady job, a hefty
IRA, and a conservative sedan. Or maybe you're preparing to sunbathe
nude on your rooftop in an attempt to catch that bohemian neighbor's
eye. Just remember to use sunscreen on those naughty bits. Click here for other signs
So here is our . StapleRefuge takes place
the first Saturdays of the month at the Endup. Fabian Falconett
is the designer. If you are interested in contacting Fabian for work,
you can contact him here.

on Monday night, this is the place. Join hard-core ravers and off duty
bartenders at this cozy night starring the DJs who rule the Endup.
Event: My Peoples Come First

Event: Blasthaus presents Eighteenth
Street Lounge
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Ursula 1000, Nicola Conte
Music: downtempo
Cover: $12
Blasthaus has been on fire lately and this incredible show should prove
no different. Eighteenth Street Lounge besides actually being a lounge,
is the DC label started by Thievery Corporation. Ursula 1000 plays a
similar style downtempo breakbeat sound, while Nicola Conte's is inspired
by Italian cinema of the 1960's.
Event: EZ Music for Hard Times
Venue: Deluxe
DJ's: Brian Cox, Power Lounger, guests
Music: eclectic lounge
Cover: free
If you're too
broke to go to the Eighteenth Street Lounge Show, you can get your power
lounging on right here in the old neighborhood. Did I sound like your
Italian grandpa for a second? Anyway, this downhome joint hosts eclectic
sounds to drown your broke ass sorrows away.
Event: Mayonnaise
Venue: Skylark
DJ's: DJs Tim, Jamie, Melyss, and Jan
Music: house
Cover: free
I used to live with this guy, I swear he went through a jar of mayonnaise
a week. The new jar of mayo was my reminder to check out the weekly
mayonnaise party except the party has less fat. In fact it has all the
Lighthearted house tracks you need for a well-balanced Tuesday.

Event: Mayday
Venue: Club
Six

Alfred A (mixed nuts), Eric C (mixed nuts), and Big El (mixed nuts),
and MC Krown Prence.
Music: drum n' bass, house
Cover: $7
It's a Mayday celebration with drum n' bass. Mandolins
n' lutes were probably more the vibe at the ancient Pagan festival,
but it's a new millennium now and the junglists have taken it over for
a proper rinse out. Artists Blue Wolf and Animator fulfill your visual
needs and Dank clothing will be giving stuff away at 12:30. Fire up
the Maypole.
Event: Fuck Me I'm Famous
Venue: Buzz 9
DJ's: DJ Rafael
Music: house, 80s, funk
Cover: $5
Um, no. I've actually heard that line before and I don't care how many
episodes of Different Strokes you starred in, I'll pass. This popular
night at the trendy Buzz 9 promises 80's and more. "Everybody has a
different kind of story/Everybody finds a way to shine...", says the
Different Strokes theme song.
Event: Come on Down
Venue: Lingba Lounge
DJ's: you
Music: mixed formats
Cover: free
It's like a
show and tell jam session with a lottery. You bring down some records,
CDs, poetry or instruments and if your number gets called, then you
"get up and do your thing" as JB would say. My friend learned to mix
records there the other day as the crowd egged him on to mix them himself
instead of the world famous Linden C who hosts the night along with
Lynn. I'm thinking about busting out the old clarinet again. What 'dya
think?

and Cosigner

Storyville gets hot and crowded but in a sweaty, beat heavy, bump and
grind sort of way. Check out your local selectas as they spin all flavas
of hip-hop and dancehall, This is not the place to get a quiet drink.
This is not the place to chat with close friends. This is the place
where you dance nasty all night with people you barely know and then
give out a fake number or take him/her home with you -- depending on
your mood.
Event: Sneaks
Venue: Buzz 9
DJ's: B Radley, Sunder, guests
Music: house
Cover: $5
This weekly party features old school and underground tech-house, Latin

Hush Lounge

his brother have been revered for. Come check out the new electronic
sound that Gavin has up his sleeve with Hawke starting out the evening,

Event: Release w/ Danny Tenaglia
Venue: Ten15
DJ's: Danny Tenaglia
(12 hour set), Behrouz, Julius Papp, Andy Caldwell, Franky Boissy, Demilo,
Keith O'Reilley, Bruce Parker, and Jerry Ross.
Music: house
Cover: $20
Was Danny Tenaglia one of those kids in high school doing beer bongs
and kegstands and all that? The reason I ask is because of this 12 hour
marathon set business. Really, what is he trying to prove? That he has
ruled the best club nights in NYC since the mid 80's? That he is world
renown and has remixed artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Pet Shop
Boys, Grace Jones, Jamiroquai and New Order? We all know how great DT
is so why the back breaking 12 hour set? Dedication, people. That's
the answer. DT is dedicated to house music. Now the least YOU can do
is to dance for 12 hours. Come on clubbers, Do your duty/Get on the
floor and shake that booty! (By the way it's also Behrouz's birthday)
Event: Atomic w/ Donald Glaude
Venue: DNA
DJ's: Donald Glaude, The Vicious Little Monster, Grisha,
Pat, Blake Mathis, AG, Ian Lewis
Music: house
Cover: $15
b4, $20 after
Donald Glaude from Seattle is infamous for making a scene. He makes
a scene yelling back at the crowd and dancing in the DJ booth but also
because his music is slammin' -- turning any normal club night into
a spectacular rave-style event. Atomic cannot be considered normal by
any stretch of the imagination however, they give you free sushi!
Event: Staple Refuge
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Jeno, Travis, Fil Latorre, David Javate,
Brian G
Music: tech-house
Cover: $10, $5 before midnight
Look everyone, it's one of my favorite tech-house-style monthlies. The
residents are from DC and usually bring out some great rare East Coast
DJs, but this month it must be the SF DJ appreciation edition. The super
fantastic house-wrecker Jeno will be spinning (expect cult-following
crowds) along with Travis the fantastic head- wrecker. Dance on the
floor, till 4 and show some love, this is our flyer of the week!
Event: Gloss
Venue: Sno-Drift
DJ's: Miguel Migs, Mauricio, MFR, J-Boogie,
Mei-Lwun
Music: deep house, downtempo
Cover: $15
Gloss is so impressive this week I may have to actually designate a
driver to stay sober so we can drive out to Sno-Drift. A cab is probably
more realistic. But whether you drive your lexus or skateboard over
there, do check out Miguel Migs sexy Naked Music sound. He's probably
about to take off on another world tour so get it while it's hot. J-Boogie
and Mei-Lwun from Soulstice keep it funky in the lounge.

Event: Devotion
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Frankie Feliciano, Ruben Mancias
Music: soulful house
Cover: $10
Devotion with Frankie Feliciano, now that's some special shit. The Devotion
crew once again using the Cinco de Mayo Extravaganza as an excuse to
dance all night on a Sunday. When I heard him in Miami at the King Street
Sounds party, even some hardcore Detroit DJs had their hands in the
air singing the melodic vocals. It's true, they could have been on E,
but what I really think, is that even the hardest fools cannot resist
the beautiful soulful house played by Frankie.
He rarely comes out here from NYC, so don't miss it.
Event: Correct Technic
Venue: Galaxy Club
DJ's: DJ Havik (Beat Junkies), Charlie Bucket,
Ocir
Music: hip-hop, breaks
Cover: $5
I remember back in the day when Julip was called Light (6 months
ago). The resident at Correct Technic, Charlie Bucket used to play down
there on a Sunday night. All the hip-hop honeys and Ecko/Phat Farm sportin'
players came out and danced till a good fight started. Can Bucket hold
down the scene at this new party? Frankly, it doesn't matter because
DJ Havik from the world famous Beat Junkies is so talented that even
if a bunch of rockers show up from Murio's across the street, they would
have to have fun...maybe even breakdance.
Event: Sunday School
Venue: Sno-Drift
DJ's: Keebo, Steve Husted, Jerry Ross, and
Seven
Cover: $10
This is probably not the type of Sunday School you grew up with,
however you can have some spiritual moments on the dancefloor and some
people might refer to the experience as being in God's house or at the
very least listening to it.
