Miami
WMC 2007
The annual pilgrimage of the DJ faithful has begun, and the raucous
parties and sunny shores await thousands of dancing fanatics at
Miami's 2007 Winter Music Conference. In terms of sheer density
of big name DJ talent, nothing can really compare to this weeklong
bacchanal. The marquee event that draws the most attention and
the biggest crowds is the epic Ultra Music Festival, which treats
the packed in masses to everyone from PvD and Tiesto to The Cure
and Fatboy Slim. The Bay Area is well represented, of course,
at a variety of events, including a pair of benefits with NextAid's
Beat's Build Hope with J-Boogie and Nazanin, and JT Donaldson
at Art For Progress's Ascension. SF-based Om Records continues
to play a major role worldwide, and the lineup for their Miami
celebration is simply jaw-dropping, with Marques Wyatt, Peter
Kruder, Andy Caldwell, Mark Farina, barely forming the tip of
the iceberg. Miguel Migs and Julius Papp are also set to show
their best at a special Miami edition of Salted, while our favorite
Dirtybirdz Justin Martin and Claude von Stroke will be part of
the Music For Your Working Class Azz special event. This is the
epicenter of world dance culture, a party atmosphere like none
other, so get there if you can and show the love of our local
legends as they show the best that SF has to offer. More

Alchemy
Alchemists of the distant past sought, infamously, to turn lead
into gold. Their efforts proved futile. Tonight, False
Profit picks up where Isaac Newtown left off, this time in
the name of art, dance, and general merriment - this time to turn
"common materials into those worth their weight in gold." And
this time? Alchemy works. Among the interative art, you'll find
video mad libs by Brett Levine, live painting by four different
artists, and a silkscreen mash-up by Domini. Alchemy also offers
music by Fake
Science and magician Keith Boudreau, and at 10pm, Missing
Piece stages an interactive fashion show with six designers and
performances by live sketch artists. Decide to participate and
you'll become an alchemist as well. Date: Saturday
3/24, Time: 8pm-2am, Place:
California Modern Art Gallery, 1035 Market, Cover:

Beats
for Life, Beats for Peace
The How Weird Street Faire unites the diverse art and music communities
of San Francisco on one sunny Sunday each year, but here in
2007 our prayers for more Weird have been answered. We get
a huge extra helping of it this Friday at a special event
that benefits the 8th annual Faire, to take place in May, and
Baby Hazel, a young member of our community who needs our help
in fighting her cancer. With five rooms of bangin' beats being
busted out by representatives of the several stages there will
be at this year's Faire, a plethora of art, and a peaceful though
energetic vibe, this is one benefit you just can't miss. Kraddy
and Boreta of Glitch Mob will be in the front Raindance room,
and in the basement you'll find a mix of funky house and dirty
breaks slung down by Jeno, Galen, and Hypnotech among others.
There's lots more in store so get ready to get frantic. Date:
Friday 3/23, Time: 10pm-5am, Place:
1015 Folsom, Cover: $20-30 sliding scale, $10
before 11pm, limited pre-sales for $15, More

Obvious allusions notwithstanding, Nobody

they offer "high-energy Brazilian funk, samba-reggae, percussion jams,
samba, afoxé, forró, frevo, rock, reggae, and pop." If you do the
math, that's a seven-piece band with two WAMMIE nominations mixing
ten genres under one roof. Add you, one set of hips, and two arms
in the air and you have a solution to what to do tonight. (EK) |
