Notice anything different on the streets of SF this week? Like, every other person has an asymmetrical haircut and some type of legwarmers? Yes! It's Noise Pop week, when SF hosts all the hottest indie bands from around the country… and their painfully, painfully hip fans. But whether or not you know the difference between Sea Wolf and Land Shark, you can still take this chance to hear some of the best up-and-coming artists in the US. Hit up the FREE opening event with Shepard Fairey, David Cross, and the Extra Action Marching Band (damn, now there's a party) this Tuesday at Mezzanine. Snow Festival
It's once again time to head for the slopes and join the North Lake Tahonians in celebrating the kick-off of their 26th Annual Snow Festival. Squaw just received several feet of fresh powder, so take this perfect opportunity to enjoy the flurry of events and activities they've got planned on and off the slopes. The Opening Night Celebration and Fireworks takes place this Friday, and you'll be treated to laser display, a torchlit parade, and plenty of bass-heavy breaks and heat-conducting house emanating from the infamous Unimog as the Space Cowboys drop their bombs. On Saturday is the Parade and the Space Cowboys' SnowDown party, the proceeds of which go towards their "non-profit quest to keep your galaxy funky". Come tuck yourself into a wintry wonderland for a weekend of satisfying snowplay. Underground Runway debuts Saturday with a fashion show featuring multiple Bay Area designers showcasing their hip, urban creations. For everyday wear that's got pizazz, look at RJ Designs. From the plus-sized Deenies collection, to RJ Wear and RJ Jeans for men, he's got something for everybody! For a flattering swimwear design created in leather or other unusual materials, Mastahn Fanaka has you covered! RubyGirl/Ruby Dolls, located in North Beach, is a fun fashion boutique carrying everything from accessories to platform heels and sparkly thongs. To make a bold statement, check out Tavia Dinasi's collection for a grounded and unique look. But honestly, the sounds brought in by beat chemists EVAC, Eskmo, BreakBeatBuddha, and many more, may be fun to try and disect, but you'll find out way more about our physical world by immersing yourself into the writhing mass of groovers and letting the hearty bass take you for a spin. Holland's 4-Strings brings the mayhem, and guess what: they're bringing it to Ten15 this Friday. Die-hard fans know that Le Tigre hasn't played together in a couple of years, but here's your chance to catch a glance: Johanna and JD are taking over Supperclub to play DJ sets, accompanied by SF's own Mistress Barbara. Opulent Temple's Syd Gris and resident Dulce Vita along with DJ Icon from Reverb Records round out the list, making this one sweet fundraiser. (CQ)
