Save How Weird!
The How Weird
Street Faire needs our help right now, and if we don't act
soon, we will be mourning its loss instead of freaking each other
in the streets to all sorts of crazy beats, like we should be on
the first Sunday in May. Earlier this month, the Faire organizers
were denied a new permit, despite their 100% safety
record. Apparently 10,000 happy people celebrating SF art,
culture, and the great urban outdoors isn't everyone in the area's
cup of tea. However, lots of neighbors, ravers, artists, DJs,
and groovers love the annual jubilee, and they are all sending
letters and emails to the the Department of Parking and Traffic,
before the appeal hearing takes place on Thursday. Visit the How
Weird site to sign the petition as well as get the letter
template. Send your letters in by email or fax by Tuesday,
and do your part to get How Weird back out on the pavement where
it should be this spring! We deserve it. Date: send
in your letter by Tuesday 2/20, public hearing on Thursday

High-Tech
Soul
Detroit is the birthplace of techno music. A city with a
past riddled by race riots and a high poverty rate today,
Detroit is also well known for the thriving underground party
scene and the new "technologic" style of music it introduced to
the world in the late '80s. Detroit techno brought international
recognition to the city and it's producers, and the
driving beats and booming, bumping bass characteristic
of the genre made a very fitting soundtrack for a city stuck
in an economic backslide with everyone looking for a release. High
Tech Soul is the first documentary to delve deep
into Detroit's history in order to understand techno. Juan
Atkins, Derrick
May and Kevin
Saunderson are regarded as the architects of the early days
of techno, and the man-meets-machine dynamic of anindustrial city
struggling with modernization runs parallel to their combination
of classic soul and R&B with synth pop and other purely electronic
elements. Interviews with party promoters, DJs as well as historians
make this a pretty impressively diverse movie that will help music
heads understand a little better what sort of influences can find
their way into a sound. This special premier screening at Mighty
will be followed up with a Q&A session with the director,
as well as an extended DJ set from Derrick May himself. Rooz
and Rouzbeh of Back2Basics as well as Powerlounger will also
be on hand to make this a movie night to remember. Date:
Fri 2/23, Time: 8pm-4am, Place:
Mighty (119 Utah), Cover: limited $15 presale, More
