Noir
City Film Fest
The finest noir film fest in the world is in full swing, and there's
still time for fans of darkly stylish, morally ambiguous cinema
to catch the classics on the big screen. What makes film noir?
It's tough to define, but you'll know it when you see it, as it
slaps you in the face like the dirty dame that killed your brother,
but whose charms are leading you astray. These are the bad boys
and femme fatales with an express ticket to hell that you were
told to stay away from, but you just can't turn your eyes away.
The organizers of this dark carnival have dug deep into the vaults
and secured films that have never been transferred to DVD or even
videotape. Only on the Castro's silver screen can you catch classics
like Kiss the Blood Off My Hands, I Walk Alone,
Pushover (Kim Novak's movie debut), and Wicked Woman,
which features Beverly Michaels putting an entire small town under
her thumb. Also among the remaining shows is Fritz Lang's Scarlet
Street, and a double dose of Joan Crawford (aka Mommy Dearest)
for the Sunday finale with The Damned Don't Cry and Possessed.
Date: now til Sun. 2/4, Place:
The Castro Theater (429 Castro), More

A
Night of Movies & Performance
Proof positive that San Franciso has no peers when it comes to
the bold, the bizarre, and the positively, mind-meltingly insane,
the Clap is a monthly gathering of those that don't quite fit
in, mostly because they couldn't possibly care enough to try.
T-boys, bois, boys, girls, grrls, t-girls and everything
in between can be seen vamping it up to the glorious chaos at
Aunt Charlie's, a great little spot tucked back in the Tenderloin.
Among the treats being offered by ringleader Gary Fembot
will be the trailer for the movie Stinky, a film
in which the titular character is fond of eating worms, drinking
gasoline, and meeting anal-retentive futon salesmen for lessons
in civility. Fembot and DJ Der Blaue Reiter will be spinning disco,
'60s, soul, new wave and other narcissitic delights to add
to the sounds of the Garage Organ Sound of Muffled, Rhani/Raul,
The Ghoulz, and, of course, some "Weekend Hippie" live
readings by Mr. Lucky, a few clips of '80s and '90s cable access
awesomeness... you know, the usual. Add to that cheap stiff
drinks and some fabulous street scenery you just aren't going
to find in SOMA or the Marina, and trust me, it will all make
wonderful sense in the end, in a nonsensical sort of way. Date:
Tues. 1/30, Time: 10pm-2am, Place:
Aunt Charlie's Mini-Discotheque (133 Turk @ Taylor), Cover:

Pandora's Trunk
It's time to start thinking about those Spring fashions, and San Francisco urbanites are lucky to have some awesome designers to choose from. If going a little green is your game, or you just like retro with a new edge, then this edition of Pandora's Trunk is for you. All of the fashions you'll find at this free event are made from re-used and recycled clothing. If you dropped off some jeans, t-shirts and old sweaters at the thrift store recently, don't be surprised if someone like Miss Velvet Cream or Miranda Caroligne has dug up your discarded garb and unleashed a torrent of sewing and designing talent to shred it and make it something amazing and new. Better yet, take a swipe at re-imagining those old clothes with the DIY clothing modification station. There'll also be some free booze and live entertainment, not to mention viewings of some great local art and a chance to get first hand fashion tips from the designers themselves. Date: Sat 1/3, Time: 1-7pm, Place: 916 Natoma, Cover: no cover, More Info. (SG)
