"Sampling" Have you heard about this exhibit at MOMA?
Christian
Marclay examines music as a theme by relating it visually
to found objects and video. He also constructs musical pieces out of
sampled sounds. In "Video Quartet," a four channel video projector synchronizes
found video clips of people playing instruments into a coherent musical
piece. Show runs April 11th - July 28th. In
a past exhibit, entitled "Sounds of Christmas" Marclay assembled a massive
collection of Christmas carol LPs inviting DJs to mix them as a performance
in the context of the museum.

Week of April 22nd - April 28th
Taurus: A recent romantic setback has you moping in your lonely,
damp, cave and swearing off of love and lust. But with the Sun and
Mercury concluding a sappy duet in your sign, you could develop a
sudden crush on someone. Maybe Larry the copy boy's ears aren't so
huge, after all. And maybe it's okay if your neighbor Nellie has a
flat chest. You'll overlook any flaws and detect the Prince or Princess
Charming beneath the frog.. Click here for other signs

Event: Sumo
Venue: The Top
DJ's: Dr. Naughty and special guests
Music: hip-hop, dancehall
Cover: $6
Red Five's
Sumo has already reached epic proportions for a SF hip-hop party. DJs
frequently include Vin Roc, Apollo and Shortkut. The vibe is good, the
music is excellent, the girl-boy ratio is balanced. The dancefloor is
so crowded that it feels like one gigantic organism all movin' to the
beat-- hands in the air like one of those slow motion party scenes in
a hip-hop video.
Event: Mondays
Venue: Redwood Room
DJ's: Consuelo
Music: downtempo
Cover: free
The Redwood
room is not just for yuppies anymore. It's been upgraded to electronic
music lovers with cars. DJ Consuelo (who has opened up for Thievery
Corp. and will be opening up for Groove Armada this Thursday) holds
it down for a smooth and sexy crowd of well dressed wine sippers (or
at least some beer drinkers who hope to feel smooth and sexy after hearing
Consuelo's set.)

already Thursday the start of the weekend. -- so fuck it. Come rock
out to your favorite hip-hop, soul and house classics with all the beautiful
people wearing neo-peasant style tops with strappy sandals at Backflip.

Music: hip-hop,
funk, breaks

b4 10pm, $5 after
Rasta Cue-tip guest-stars on episode 19 of The Sound Defenders: The
Universe is being attacked by bad disposable hip-hop and evil pop robots.
Who can stop this hazardous ear assault? Will Rasta Cue-Tip bring Kryptobeats
from his native planet and save the day? Will Romanowski use his supersoul
powers to ward off the pop-o-tronetic robot soldiers? Will Miss Lema
escape the clutches of the platinum-toothed blingerotomus monster? Will
Satva be able to sabotage the evil empire of the Britney-Hemispheres?
Stay tuned next time for another episode of SOOUUUNND DEFENDERS!!!
Event: Taboo
Venue: Liquid
DJ's: David Harness
Music: house, garage
Cover: $3
It's no secret that David Harness is a damn good DJ. So why is he only
charging $3 for his party? I don't know but let's not jinx it by talking
about it too much. This
vibe-o-licious house party needs to stay the same as it ever was- providing
soulful nutrition for the hungry.

Event: Audible Colors

Event: Qool Happy Hour
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Spesh, Gil, Hyper D
Music: trance, breaks

If a tree falls
in a forest and no one is around does it still make a sound? If you
don't have a job and you go to a bar at 5pm, can you still call it a
happy hour? Qool says yes. This art gallery/ bar plays trance at 6pm
for creative directors and other peeps who like to get a little raving
in before dinner. Maybe you should get off Craigslist and bump into
your next employer here.

4am.

Oh Lombardi, you're not fooling anyone. We know you got the cool ass
name for your cool ass party from an article in MEAN magazine about
Charlie Manson getting turned down by the Beach Boy's for a record deal.
It's a good analogy, though. Do not expect to hear any happy go-lucky-Beach-Boy-house-tracks
at this gig.You heard that stuff last night anyway, tonight sip on sangria
and get a dose of creative funky intellectual beats. This is our flyer

nominee Mystic
performs live and if you haven't heard this incredible MC/singer from
Oakland yet, you are in for a surprise. Lauren Hill is very scared.

Event: Bionic
Venue: The Top
DJ's: Iz, Solar and guests
Music: house
Cover: $5
This tradition at the top started as an 80's night by some of my
favorite Sf DJ's IZ, Mark E. Quark and Solar. It's mostly house now
with some deep disco and electro thrown in for the hell of it. Out of
town talent frequently stop by including DJ Diz,Mike Clark from Detroit,
the Lawnchair Generals. The DJs usually have fun and put a little humor
in the mix which seems to be appreciated by a packed local crowd of
after boat-party victims, off duty bartenders, lower Haight Djs and
their roommates. It really feels like a family on Sunday, in fact maybe
I should stop writing about this one. Yeah, I was joking. There's no
party here on Sunday...
