Strawberries
& Bacon
Some (insane) people might not like bacon, and some (frighteningly
bizarre) people might not like strawberries, but I refuse to believe
that anyone could ever dislike both, and if you do then, well,
I'm sorry, I'm going to have to ask you to leave the planet. Adding
either of these two magical ingredients to anything automatically
makes it roughly a zillion times better, so it's about damn time
we had an event that paid tribute to these incomparable delicacies
with the Strawberry & Bacon Festival. And what an event it
is, with a tasty mash-up fashion show to satisfy your sweet side
as Domini,
Miss
Velvet Cream and Estar deck out some lovely models with their
utterly unique and beautiful creations. The salty need for beats
is in good hands as well, with Mochipet, Mike Boo and several
other Daly
City Records DJs, The Shotgun Wedding Quintet, 20 Minute
Loop, circus performers, plus the ever popular bacon and strawberry
art. Enter the world of bacon and strawberries, you know you won't
regret it! Date: Sat. 1/20, Time:
8pm, fashion show at 10pm, Place: 111 Minna,
Cover: $8, More

Beyond
Beats and Rhymes
Popular hip-hop and rap music videos tend to overshadow lyrical
talent with scantily clad women and the glorification of violence.
They've become increasingly stereotypical, sending a mixed message
to audiences. In an effort to shift focus from over-priced eye
candy to lyrics, beats and talent, Byron Hurt created Hip-Hop:
Beyond Beats and Rhymes, a documentary that examines sexism,
violence, manhood and homophobia within the hip-hop culture. He
interviews heavy hitters such as Mos Def, mogul Russell Simmons,
Jadakiss, and includes commentary from Kevin Powell and Sarah
Jones as well as interviews of women at Spelman College. Featuring
performances by Youth
Movement Records and Youth Speaks, as well as discussions
with a post screening panel, this event hopes to shed light on
the softer, more talented side to the hip-hop culture. Date:
Mon, 1/17, Time: doors open at 6pm,
screening at 6:30pm, Place: Oakland Museum of
California (10th and Oak Street), Cover: no cover,

Killing
My Lobster Faces The Music
If you haven't yet been exposed to Killing
My Lobster, don't miss this chance. The sketch comedy troupe,
which has been winning awards right and left since its inception,
has pulled out all the stops for their latest production. KML
Faces The Music is an all-musical tribute to our fair city, including
a hip-hop tribute to the Mission-vs-Marina feud, songs about burritos,
and so, so much more. In fact, the show is so popular that they've
extended its run… but time is running out, so catch it this week
or regret it forever. Date: Wed 1/17 - Sun 1/21,
Time: 8pm Wed-Fri, 7&10pm Sat, 7pm Sun, Place:
ODC Theater, Cover: $20, $15 w/student I.D. (pay-what-you-can
show Sat 10pm), More

Scoring
the third spot in the DJDreamteam poll is a tall task, and most would
find it a challenge to keep a Tuesday party successful for
more than six years. Well, David
Harness has done both and if you're there tonight you will see
why. Taboo is a party about friends and folks hangin' out hearing
what David has discovered. This party is unpredictable because David
moves in unpredictable directions... but each step always works. (KW)
