or jump-start to Weekly Pix

Getting stoned & planting trees! or planting stones and smoking trees! Either way, this week is a great week to party and that's where Nitevibe comes in. I am convinced though, that 4/20 and Earthday were purposely scheduled for the same week with the progressive thought that one day, similar to Christmas and New Years, we would have off from work the entire week to celebrate the rites of spring.

6th Annual 4:20 Hemp Festival
A hemp bazaar of speakers, bands and DJspresented by The Cannabis Action Network, High Times Magazine and NORML will be sure to leave you dazed but not confused about celebrating the hemp plant. Rudy of the Marginal Prophets, as well as the drummer from the legendary Meters are included in the long list of performers. Date: Saturday 4/20, Place: Studio Z, 314 11th St., Time: 4:20 PM- 4:20 AM, Admission: $22, Information: 510 486 8083

For those not yet in the "Know" The ancient legend of 4:20 is a tale that dates back to the early 1990's. Apparently cops use the numbers "420" as a radio code for "pot-smoking in progress".Today pot smokers everywhere are "in progress" celebrating at 4:20 PM an AM, but they especially celebrate on April 20th. Earthday predates the herb-revering holiday but you can bet the resin in your bowl that this is no accident that these days should fall in the same week, as hemp may very well be the answer to the world's environmental dilemmas. (Click here or here to learn more.)

Save the Earth Feast - Earthday
Save the Earth Foundation is throwing a huge Earth Day bash to Celebrate our planet. It's the only one we got so we better start paying attention. DJs Dragonfly, Soulsalaam and Chiha along with bands, Medicine Drum and Playground are just some of the auditory delights lined up for this afternoon rager. Date: Sunday 4/21, Place: Kelly's Mission Rock, 817 China Basin, Time: 3 PM-10 PM, Admission: $10 advance, $15 at door, Information: www.savetheearthfest.com

Dance Machine Kicks Ass, We like to laugh around here. We always have our ears out for funny shit - silly websites or artsy films by independent directors. Check out Dance Machine by Ward Evans and John Benson. In the spirit of films like "Best in Show" this five minute mockumentary is hilarious. You'll never look at those dance video games the same way again. Click here to laugh your ass off.

The Cosmic Buttkick
Week of April 18, 2002 - April 24, 2002

Aries: The willful Ram is having a rare attack of self-doubt. You're wondering, "Why did I become pen pals with that Death Row inmate?" or "Who convinced me that a Pilates class was a good idea?" Consequences of impulsive decisions lurk around every corner. You've collected a pile of rude proposals from Bubba Bear of Cell Block 8. And you've overspent yourself on trips to the chiropractor, who advises against that Fitness Through Torture regimen. A sensitive Moon placement urges you to unlock the discomforting truth. So here is our Flyer Of The Week. Soul Kitchen tonight at Club Six. You may remember the art on this flyer from the 70's show, Good Times. That I'm sure is what the designer, Gil Hodges was thinking you would have at this new hip-hop weekly. To contact Gil to rock out your flyer like this one, e-mail: soulflexing@earthlink.net

Event: Natural
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Bali, Chuck & Roll, Tad Ro, Esteban
Music: deep house, Brazilian
Cover: $5 before 11 PM

Natural is a new Brazilian and deep house joint every Thursday at Backflip.
The launch party is this week and I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those electronic-world-music-heavy-percussive-sex-fests. Sex for the mind, that is --where natural and electronic beats knock boots.

Event: Soul Kitchen
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: Spair, Seven, Mike Nice, Kevey Kev, Sake One
Music: hip-hop, soul
Cover: $10
"Keepin' your head above water/Makin' a wave when you can/Temporary Lay-offs/Good Times/Easy Credit Rip-offs/Good Times/Ain't we lucky we got em'?"
Soul Kitchen is a new hip-hop weekly at Club Six claiming "East coast flavor and West Coast vibes." The art on the flyer is the same art shown when the credits to Good Times rolled. Remember that show from the 70's with JJ Walker? Anyway I like the flyer that's why it's FLYER OF THE WEEK. I'll probably like the party too. Dynomite.

Event: Kit Kat
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Miguel Migs, Jellybear
Music: deep house
Cover: $TBA
I'm seeing that superstar SF DJ, Miguel Migs more now than before he was on tour. Not that I mind at all. How can you get tired of that sexy deep house sound Naked Music is famous for? Check out Miguel as he makes his rounds supporting his new release, Nude Tempo One.

Event: Rude

DJ's: Star Eyes,Tomas, Monty Luke, Mike Bee
Music:
2-step, garage, broken beat
Cover: $5
Formerly Expansions, Tomas and crew decided to take it to another level. Still providing the same quality jazz-influenced cutting edge tracks fresh off the truck from London, but now they're putting their backs into it for some dancefloor 2-step madness with sounds that will not allow you to stay seated. This weeks guest is Star Eyes of Eklekic.

Event: Wicked 11 Yr. Anniversary
Venue: DNA Lounge
DJ's: Jeno, Garth, Markie Mark, Lorin, Clay
Music: funky house
Cover: $15
Wow! 11 years. Got to give em' props. The Wicked Collective has been churning out monthlies and special events for SF house heads since before ecstasy was a household name. Thanks for helping define the west coast sound. SF people let's take a moment and think about what that means to you...

Event: Hemisphere
Venue: Lingba Lounge
DJ's: Sifu, Freya, & Zigmund Void plus special guests. Audio Angel & Shannon (live vocals) Frogger on didgeridu
Music: drum & bass, nu-skool breaks, live music
Cover: free
I have been hearing shit lately from whiners complaining that I made fun of the name of their party. Well whiners take a lesson from Hemisphere- a great name for their party. You feel like you are in another hemisphere! Lingba has plants everywhere you turn, the lighting is warm, tropical drinks are available made with real coconut, your listening to some atmospheric drum and bass which twists and turns mixing into harder pounding moments. Live didgeradu and vocals add to the texture. Any moment a spidermonkey is going to drop on my head, I just know it.

Ok. This should some it up. Francois K was his mentor and coworker. Frankie Knuckles was his roommate -- talk about a fun house party! Matthias originally from Germany has been DJing and producing for almost twenty years and has worked with everyone from Bjork to Masters at Work and the Backstreet Boys. This is one of those historical moments you really must see.

Event: Melting Pot
Venue: 177 Townsend
DJ's: Mr. E, Wisdom, Hyde, Able One, Ivry, Fife, Lindsey, NNY, MC Child
Music: hip-hop, drum and bass
Cover: $5
Melting Pot...clever. Is melting pot how you make hash? It's probably a little more complicated than that. Yet another reference to weed here on good old 4/20. Once you've put your joint out, walk into an envelop of hip-hop and jungle sounds resonating through the air. You've come here for a reason -- an important reason. Music's getting louder, thicker. You feel the bass though your shoes, in your feet. You're looking around at the scene, bobbing your head to the fat ass beats. It's dark, but through a haze of smoke you see Ecko and Triple-5 hoody sweatshirts all around... and you realize... shit! you're standing in your own bedroom closet, you stoned motherfucker! Better put the weed down and get to Club Townsend.

Event: 4:20
Venue: Storyville
DJ's: Chicken Skratch, Paulytek, Derrick D, Native Elements (live)
Music: hip-hop, reggae, dancehall
Cover: $10
Three the Hard Way presents the sound of the champions with your selectors spinning all the best reggae, hip-hop and dancehall you would expect to hear from a night simply entitled 420. Storyville will be packed with locals and south bay folks alike but most importantly the whole place is dancing. Native Elements perform live.

Event: Defected Sessions
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Simon Dunmore, Matt Mau
Music: house
Cover: $20
On the flyer for this party, the writer talks about the numerous accomplishments of DJ Simon Dunmore from London. Included is this line, "...Played in Ibiza -- (the real one in Spain)...in 1985...(when it was good.)" What do you think, is this guy funny or condescending? It really doesn't matter though does it? You are right, it's all about the music. Simon has played with Roger Sanchez, Bob Jones and Gilles Peterson and started the Defected Sessions label signing Kings of Tomorow, Dubtribe and Ultra Nate. Go ahead be a smart ass we just want to hear you play.

You must have smoked too much yesterday.
