Youth Speaks Fundraiser
Founded in 1996 in San Francisco, Youth Speaks is at the forefront of a national Spoken Word performance, education, and youth development movement. In the Bay Area, over 45,000 youth are using this powerful medium to communicate directly with their peers. Politically aware, critically engaged, and unafraid to speak, young people are picking up the pen and grabbing hold of the microphone, moving themselves into positions of power – claiming voice when they’ve been voiceless, and access where they’ve been sidelined. Part II of their Summer Fundraising Series is an evening of great music and inspiring performances. With special performances by National Poetry Slam Champions, it's an opportunity to find out exactly who they are, what they do, and why they do it better than any other agency in the country. DJs Add1 and J-Boogie will be adding to the mix. Date: Thu. 9/14, Place: Mezzanine, Cover: $15 presale, $20 door, More Info.

September is usually our out-of-the-fog month here in the city. So hopefully the Sun Gods will shine down upon us this Sunday for A Family Affair at the Pool at Bambuddha Lounge. The DJ line up keeps getting better at these parties as this one has 12 DJs hitting the decks between 2pm and 8pm. That is a serious array of talent. These parties have been a big success this summer so hit one up before it's fall again. (RW)

Event: Funk n' Trunk
Venue: Levende Lounge
DJs: Seven
Music: funk, house
Cover: no cover
It's Funk n' Trunk time again, and as we are running full throttle into big fall fashion season, I suggest you take this opportunity to update your wardrobe the easy way, instead of braving the throngs of frantic back-to-schoolers downtown. You can bop around to DJ Seven's funky house and breaks beats and take time out to sip a bloody should you desire. When they make it this easy, it really is a treat to see what's new and dress fresh for fall. (DKD)

Event: Funky Chicken Brunch
Venue: Mars Bar (798 Brannan St @ 7th)
DJs: Juanita Moore Candi Gurl The MOREboys
Music: smash up beats
Cover: no cover
It's clearly a fact that everyone loves fried chicken. Even if they don't like eating it, everyone likes the delectable scent of it. They must, for otherwise there would be no explanation as to why this event always sells out. Maybe it's the yummy honey goo or Juanita's personal touch or the smash beats or the fun in the sun. But I have a feeling it's the funky fried chicken that reels 'em in. This time Candi Gurl and TheMore Boys will be servin' it up with style. (DKD)

Event: The Lost Party
Venue: Smoke Tiki Lolunge (152 Post St. San Jose)
DJs: Johnny Fiasco, M3, Rick Preston, Anthony Mansfield, MJ Gamez, Loren
