Burning
Man 2006
If I need to tell you what Burning Man is, you haven't been in
SF for very long. Basically, take 30,000 adventurous souls, a
truly fantastic amount of creative energy, an incredible do-it-yourself
vibe, cover them in dust and dump them in the sun-blasted Nevada
desert, and Burning Man is what you get. It's an experiment in
art, free expression, living on the edge, and a gifting society
that lets us, for one week at least, become someone (or something)
completely new. From massive fire-spewing art in the deep playa
to Victorian high teas on an art car to dancing in the dust at
one of the many sound camps, there are more things than one person
could ever hope to imagine or experience there. So if you notice
the city seeming a little low on its usual weirdness in the coming days, don't be
alarmed. We'll be back; we're just going home for a week. Date:
Mon 8/28 - Mon 9/4, Place: Black Rock City, Nevada,

San Francisco Fashion Week goes off only once a year, so take
the opportunity to check out the latest in fashion when it
enjoys its week at the forefront of SF culture. Established
and up-and-coming designers will exhibit in professional fashion

will be a boutique featuring the work of our local pool of fashion
design talent. Innovative, exciting, out there, and original,
you will see it all, from Colleen
Queen Couture to ready-to-wear by Oda. With
after parties spanning the week at everywhere from Mezzanine to
the Clift, there are more than enough happening events to have
you booked all week long. Date: Wed 8/23 - Sun

One
Night Stand
San Francisco is probably the most honest and open city in America
when it comes to sex, and organizations like SFSI and the Center
for Sex and Culture are a big reason why. The 9th Annual One Night
Stand is put on by them in conjunction with the SF Artists' Resource
Center as a celebration of all those things that your momma told
you were naughty. Erotic and fetish art are the main focus, with
a very accessible vibe throughout that would put even the most
skittish midwest refugee at ease. Live music, photography sessions,
nude modeling and more will be on display, and if you're feeling
adventurous and want to put yourself on display a little, costumes
are more than welcome. Date: Wed 8/23, Time:
5-9pm, Place: SOMArts (934 Brannan @ 9th), Cover:

Film
Night in the Park
Remember when going to the movies was fun, before Hollywood ran
out of good ideas and it didn't cost $60 between tickets, popcorn,
parking and drinks? Well SF is trying to bring some fun back to
the cinema with Film Night In the Park. This Saturday at Dolores
Park you can snuggle up under a blanket and provide your own refreshments
as you take in a 100% free showing of Best In Show. This offbeat
classic mockumentery takes a hilarious look at the insane pet
owners who enter dog shows. It's a fun, inexpensive night out,
and that's a rare thing these days. Date: Sat.
