or jump-start to Weekly Pix

Covering this year's Wicked Music Conference in Miami has put untold demands on our endurance level and abilities as investigative journalists (yea, right!) not to mention the awful sleep depravation, and damage to our brain cells and liver, we may have left a few of our peeps behind but we took no prisoners in our attempt to cover the week that was in sunny-warm Miami… it's a tough job. But because we love you… here it is part one of two:

In Search for our Sonic Messiah
120 hours of dance, decadence and debauchery
My mission as a record label executive was to find the second coming, the next messiah, a Sonic Messiah who could guide us up the electronic path of righteous beats and ignite a global movement of dance and trance junkies around dance floors and cash registers from here to Timbuktu.

Event: Twirl
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Tommy Neal, Cho Ego, Ben Doren, Demilo, Trevor Mijares
Music: house
Cover: $5

There are 2 kinds of people in the world, those who reject a 4-4 beat and those who accept the 4-4 beat. This SF- style house night reveres the 4-4 and guess what the date is today-you got it. So what does it all mean, you ask? Absolutely nothing at all. Just wear some stylish shoes and have a good time.

Event: Blueprint
Venue: Julip
DJ's: Tomas, Tom Thump
Music: nu-jazz, brokenbeat, 2 step
Cover: Free
Have you heard the 2 step remake of the Sound of Music soundtrack? Neither have I but if there was one, Blueprint at Julip would be an appropriate place to hear it. The bar has this really nice house-in-the-Alps feel to it, yet the jazzy beats keep you warm. If you want to know why Tom's CD s called "Panatone: Warm" and Tomas' CD is called "Positive Space," your answers are here. Hey this flyer is one of our favorite things. (Flyer o' the week)

Event: Come Unity
Venue: 177 Townsend
DJ's: Gene Farris, Simon, Jeno, Tony
Music:
Funky Chicago house
Cover: TBA
Gene Farris from Chicago started out making mix tapes for his friends when he was twelve. Now he is regarded as a major influence in the newer wave of Chicago house producers/DJs. He plays all over the world but his jazzy disco style should prove to be a big hit with the SF dance floor -- surprising even the funkiest SF crowd.

Event: Spundae
Venue: Ten15
DJ's: Alex Whalen, Jerry Bonham
Music:
progressive house, deep house
Cover: $20
Six degrees of separation: Alex Whalen from DC is on Deep Dish's Yoshitoshi label. Not only that, but he manages the website and is rumored to be an encyclopedia of progressive house knowledge. He has interviewed John Digweed for a UK Love Parade website and now here is the amazing coincidence, when I was at the Love Parade last year, my friend's Dad who is a psychotherapist told me he loves Jerry Bonham and prescribes it to his patients. Now Alex Whalen and Jerry Bonham are playing together at Ten15.What does it all mean? Again…just a good show.

Event: Square presents Pink
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Soulstice P.A., Anita Lofton, Divasonic, Valerie The Vibe Tribe, Cosine, Chuck and Roll, Bali +
Music:
Soulful house, live downtempo grooves
Cover: $20
"Costume participation is strongly recommended" I'm all for dressing up especially in pink. I have a shiny pink Puma jogging suit I wear at any possible occasion. But what happens if you wear yellow or red? Will you be laughed at or worse thrown out of the event? Is mauve acceptable or does it have to be a hot sexy 80's leather pump pink? Only the Delicious Karma people know the answer. Can't wait to find out. Actually I don't really care, but I honestly do care about hearing Gina Rene sing and catching live Divasonic live on her superflute.

Event: Atomic
Venue: DNA
DJ's: Tim Healey, Didje Kelli, Laird, Kramer, Seven, Noah Eastman
Music: progressive house, deep house
Cover: $15
Atomic is celebrating its first year. I can't believe how much it's grown. Last time I saw this event it was only in a progressive high chair, now its blossomed into quite a fine young party with some great DJ's holding down a deep house vibe upstairs and the trademark Thump sound downstairs. Free sushi from 10-11 pm. Oh wait, correction. It's not just sushi-it's Blowfish Sushi. (Give me a break I'm trying to work the endorsement angle here)

Event: Kojak
Venue: Hush Hush
DJ's: Cool Chris, Vinnie Esparza
Music: Latin funk, afrobeats, hip-hop
Cover: $5
I have a feeling we are all invited to Rock this funky joint. Strongly encouraged, even. Apparently Kojak is devising some master plan "to bump our rumps." Our character, Kojak is on the flyer dressed in a shirt with a large collar and he has a big-ass gun. Frankly I'm not about to argue with the man.

Event: Revolver
Venue: Nickie's
DJ's: Markie, Kevin, Jayson, George, Ron Ison
Music: house
Cover: $7
What kind of house? Boat party house! If you haven't been on a Bulletproof Boat party because you get sea sick or something then this is the perfect event for you. It's also $20 cheaper than the boat and don't worry after a few drinks you'll be rockin' anyway.

Event: Funk Odyssey
Venue: Hotel Ibiza
DJ's: DJ's Mark Farina, Eddie Amador, and Danny Love
Music: funky house
Cover: TBA
What is a funk odyssey? I'm picturing an off-off-off Broadway musical where someone interprets Homer's great work, "The Odyssey" and sets it to music by Tower of Power. It ends up being a knock-off of the Wiz maybe Gary Coleman stars…but we know better don't we? Mark Farina is playing-that's why it's a Funk Odyssey. Now it all makes sense. I just saw Mark play in Miami and he was on fire so don't miss this all night funky house affair.

Event: Grand Central Soundsystem Tour 2002
Venue: Justice League
DJ's: Rae & Christian, JBoogie, Toph One
Music: Hip-hop, downtempo
Cover: $12
Red Wine presents a night of strong UK's hip-hop and downtempo. DJs Rae & Christian are on tour to support their new album "Nocturnal Activity" on !K7 also with vocalist Nikolsol. I haven't heard this album yet but !K7 is a great label. (They put out all those DJ Kicks compilations. and the K & D Sessions) If you enjoy sounds like DJ Shadow or Massive Attack, you will not be disappointed.

Event: Tra La La
Venue:
Skylark
DJ's: Linden C
Music: house
Cover: $5, free if in drag
This brand-spankin' new night is hosted by Meep Meep. Should I know who that is? If you come in drag it's free. How fun will this be- a drag night at Skylark! International London/Ibiza DJ Linden C will no doubt play the beats that make you want to don a mustache or shave one.

Event: T-Dance
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Steve Husted with Residents Jason Hayes,
David Harness, Larry Reed, Charlotte the Baroness
Music: deep house
Cover: $10
Do you know how embarrassed I am? I went to the Endup two months ago and I'm STILL hearing stories about my antics there. Just last night at a local bar on Haight, someone came up to me and said "Hey, last time I saw you…" Yes I know! I've gotten a few e-mails from people referring to conversations I didn't know I had and apparently I made a new friend. He says hi to me all the time when I see him out now. I don't know his name. It only recently occurred to me that we probably met that fateful T-Dance afternoon when I stayed until 5pm dancing to deep afternoon house.

Event: Reggae Sundaze
Venue: Nickie's
DJ's: Ras David I
Music: roots reggae
Cover: $3
I am so here on Sunday after all that fancy Miami business. I'm over it. I just want to chill and listen to some roots reggae in a dusty old bar and drink beers. No Paul Oakie, No super megaclubs, No $12 rum and cokes, no guest list debates. Just me Bob, Bunny and Pete. Now if you didn't yet, go read my Miami stories. Peace.
