North Beach Festival
It's time for the 52nd Annual Precious Cheese North Beach Festival, and despite all the whining and hoopla, and thanks to Mayor Newsom, alcoholic beverages will continue to be served! The festival organizers and the throngs of die-hard patrons will definitely be cheers-ing to that as they enjoy the arts and crafts, live music, and other delights, including a Celebrity Pizza Toss, Animal Blessings (yes, they bless everything from Fido to pet Iguanas), and an Italian street chalk art competition. Don't miss Tainted Love's performance of '80s hits! Date: Sat. 6/17 - Sun. 6/18, Time: 10am-6pm, Place: Upper Grant Ave & Washington Square area, Cover: no cover, More Info. (DKD)

The Passage
If you were at Burning Man last year, you might have met a friend of mine. She was a beautiful woman, about 35 feet tall, 22,000 pounds, and spent the whole week pouring her knowledge, love, and life experience in the form of liquid fire into her child's hand. The two of them formed The Passage, quite possibly the iconic art piece of BRC in 2005. This incredible steel creation by Dan Das Mann and Karen Cusolito (and a slew of their friends) has been awarded a prestigious honor, as it will be installed on the Embarcadero near the Ferry Building for 6 months. Massive in scale and yet possessing amazing depth of detail up close, this is a landmark piece exposing all of San Francisco to playa-scale art as part of B.R.A.F.'s collaboration with the city. Check out the official dedication this Friday, which will be followed up by an old-school rager of an afterparty at Headless Point to celebrate art at its finest. Date: Fri. 6/16, Time: 11am (Press Event), 6pm (Opening Ceremony), 9pm (afterparty), Place: Press Event & Opening Ceremony: Pier 14 (Mission @ Embarcadero), Afterparty: Headless Point, More Info. Stern Grove Season Opener
Every year since 1938 the Stern Grove Festival has provided San Franciscans with free performances that enrich and enliven the civic atmosphere. This year's festival kicks off with a pair of musicians who have gained fame by applying their eclectic and honest sound to a pair of movie soundtracks. Aimee Mann is a tremendously talented songwriter whose narrative style earned her an Academy Award nomination for Save Me, which was part of the soundtrack for the film Magnolia. Seu Jorge first gained recognition for playing Knockout Ned in City of God, and his samba roots were on display as he acoustically covered various David Bowie songs in Portuguese for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. It's all free and a long-standing tradition in a city that's always changing itself, not to mention a hell of a great way to spend a summer afternoon. Date: Sun. 6/18, Time: 2pm, Place: Sigmund Stern Grove (19th & Sloat), Cover: No Cover, More Info. (SG)
