San
Francisco IndieFest
It's time for the 8th Annual SF IndieFest film
festival, so don't miss your chance to experience
"pure viewing satisfaction" that's slightly out
of the ordinary. Turntable, a pulp action
drama about a DJs ambushed drug deal, features
all our favorite movie elements: drugs, sex, violence,
and an amazing soundtrack of course. In Spin,
a strange DJ sets up his decks on an urban
block and, through manipulation of his tables,
is able to mend the tragic events occuring aroud
him. Besides the smorgasbord of additional indie
films, there are several parties that shouldn't
be missed, including the Big Lebowski party on
Saturday at ArtSF.
It only goes off once a year, so don't miss your
chance to catch some truly original film flavors,
styles, and subject matter. Date:
Thurs 2/2 - Sun 2/12, Time, Place, Cover:

Oxygen
Bar First Friday
Everything you need for your mind and body is
at Oxygen this Friday night. There's delicious
sushi in "big ass" proportions, an array of beverages,
and a full-service oxygen bar for your energy
levels and state of mind. To round out the experience,
First Fridays premier the featured artwork of
a Bay Area artist gallery-style, and this month
it's Furyone, a first-generation San Francisco
graffiti artist whose work has been coloring-in
city streets for the past twenty-two years. All
of the featured works were created using spray-cans,
and the vast majority is freehand and freestyled
(no stencils or premeditation utilized). There
will be over forty pieces on display and for sale
at the artist's discretion. If you are still in
doubt that Oxygen may fall short in its efforts
to stimulate your entire being, ExtraLars, Citizen
Pen, and guests will be spinning their unique
blend of underground hip hop, dance hall, and
breaks. So come to lounge, indulge, peruse, consume,
or be inspired and leave complete. Date:

Few
can challenge DJ Premier's status as one of the most important hip-hop
trackmasters of the '90s. Aggressive and raw, a Premier track was
an instantly recognizable soundclash of battling loops and heavy
scratching. Besides helming tracks for Gang Starr, Premier's productions
appeared on many important East Coast labels with Illmatic
(Nas), Ready to Die (Notorious B.I.G.), Reasonable Doubt (Jay-Z),
The Sun Rises in the East (Jeru the Damaja), and Black on Both Sides
(Mos Def). Premier returned in force with the new millennium with
shots that included Common, D.I.T.C., D'Angelo, Jadakiss, and Snoop
Dogg. See this master at work when he takes over the white-hot Fluid
Ultra Lounge for this very special occassion. (SG)

Records family as they celebrate their anniversary and kick off
what is sure to be another decade of pioneering the music of San Francisco.
Few underground labels have done as much to promote the future of
our house music scene, as well as contributed to downtempo, hip-hop
and breaks artists, as well. While this is already the third stop
on the label's momentous tour, no other city's lineup is anywhere
near as stacked as ours, which includes such heavy hitters as Mark
Farina and Andy Caldwell. With all of this talent under one roof,
you'd be foolish not to come with at least three of your friends.
A decade of future music, I'll toast to that. (AC) |
