St. Valentine's Day - Love it or Leave It? Some view it as a day to get laid, some view it as an excuse for Hallmark to make money. Thursday

Event: Play Industry's Valentine's Day PJ Party
Venue: Cloud 9
DJ's: Gabriel Rene, Repete, Cosine
Music: house
Cover: TBA

Are people actually going to wear their pajamas? -- that's what I want to know. If I go to one more of these theme parties in my underwear and I'm the only one...I'm going to have some words for the promoter. Why can't everyone comply with the theme like they do at the "Pajama Jammy Jam" in the epic film, House Party II? Play Industries hosts this special event which mixes deep house with complimentary champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. Yum.

Event: d:Code Presents We like Boys III
Venue: DNA
DJ's: Disco D, Forest Green/Push, Polywog/Dr. Lung, XJS/8Ball, Seraphim/Disco D,Lucretia, Kyron_5
Music: d&b, ghetto-tech, electro, breakbeat, industrial
Cover: $7
Basically everyone's in drag -- girls dressed like boys and boys dressed like girls battling each other for the gender twisting drum and base, ghetto-tech, electro- Valentine crown. Ghetto-technologist, Disco D is here from Detroit. (I'm hoping to see him in some stilettos.) The full name of this annual event is "We Like Boys III: It's a Love/Hate Thing." -- No doubt!

Event: Loose Joint's Lonely Hearts Valentine's Special
Venue: The Top
DJ's: Chris Orr, Travis
Music: house, hip-hop, disco, funk
Cover: $5
I hear this party is going to be reminiscent of a 7th grade dance with decorations and everything. I'm going to pass out some of those Valentine's you buy at Walgreen's -- The ones that are perforated, come 36 to a box and have pictures of monster trucks or Barbie on them. Unlike your 7th Grade dance however, the dancefloor should be packed with freaks as Residents Chris Orr and Travis play a loving blend of hip-hop, breaks and house.

Event: Future Sound of Urban Rhythm
Venue: 26 Mix
DJ's: Mei-Lwun, Gina Rene (vocals), Sep
Music: soul, house, breakbeats
Cover: $5
Hearing Soulstice members DJ Mei-Lwun, and Gina Rene on vocals is a really sexy way to spend Valentine's Day at the dimly lit 26 Mix. The futuristic electronic soul sound is the perfect soundtrack to hear while making out with your significant other. It's also the perfect soundtrack to hear while making out with a random stranger who you happen to meet at the bar. Not that I would ever do that.
I'm just speculating.

Event: Lovetrap
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Franky Boissy, Kaskade, SugarT
Music: house
Cover: $15
Love...Trap isn't that redundant?
This sexy house party by Urbangroove features Franky Boissy from Naked Music and Kaskade from Om Records. There are drink specials and erotic visual projections by Visual Penetration -- that translates to drunk couples watching pornos. Only one to a bathroom stall please.

Friday

Event: Roy Davis Jr. at Square
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Roy Davis Jr., Rick Preston, Richie and Nihal
Music: soulful house
Cover: $20
Reverend Roy Davis Jr.! (He's not really a reverend but it fits with the rest of his name don't you think?) With tracks like "Angel" and "Gabriel" it also fits his style. This Chicago producer calls his music "soul electrica". We're talking about some gospel house anthems that will have you high-fiving God.

Event: 3 Degrees Monthly Foundation Party
Venue: Liquid
DJ's: Alain "Corazon", Jeremiah Seraphine, The Mad Thinker
Music: deep house
Cover: $5 for members, $6 general public
I'm afraid these 3 Degrees Global People are trying to take over the world. They're from Chicago and they have a monthly featuring deep house here in SF -- impressive! Their theory is the whole "6 degrees of separation" idea. But they think all humans are separated by only 3 people, hence their name. If you join their network, then you get in free wherever they throw a party. That's either really cool, or it's a strange cult. I'll check it out and report back.

Event: Lupercalia
Venue: Black Box Theater
DJ's: Ocelot, Quasar, Yohimbe, Sir Eel, Betsy Rasa, Jaguar3, Aldo, Brenden, Shannon, Heartlove
Music: trance
Cover: $15
Ok so here is a trance listing. Now all of you trance kids can stop sending me hate mail. It's a Fluoro Fetish Fantasy! Join your fellow trancers in a celebration of the Lupercalian tradition and St. Valentine, the manifestation of the love gods Eros, Cupid, Kama, Priapus, and Pan. The original predecessor of Valentine's Day was Rome's Lupercalia, a festival of sexual license. Come dressed in your hottest fetish attire, for that sexy psy-trance vibe.

Saturday

Event: Atmosfere
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Francois K, Said
Music: house
Cover: $20
Welcome to the history of house music, New York City in 1975. Francois K started DJing when a mixer was considered underground technology! He went on to play legendary venues such as the Loft, Paradise Garage and Studio 54. He is considered to be the Godfather of dance music, and after 20 years is still playing! Celebrating the release of a new CD entitled "Deep and Sexy", expect nothing less than the best music and the longest line you've ever experienced at Minna. Happy B-Day, Resident DJ Said!

Event: Love Affair
Venue: Hotel Ibiza
DJ's: Little Louie Vega, Feelgood, Stryke, DRC, Patrick Scott, Moda, Richard Summerhayes, Ghost 3000, Liquid, Gianni, Joey Mazzola, A-Trak, Klever, Infamous, Ian Lewis, Melanie, Frank Nitty, Kevin Kind +
Music: funky house, progressive, disco, hip-hop, breaks
Cover: $30
Yet another brick in the foundation of house music is Little Louie Vega from NYC. Vega is one half of the legendary production duo, Masters At Work. You know at least 10 of their tracks. Living up to their name, MAW literally built the house music we know today. The whole lineup at the Love Affair 10 year Reunion is impressive. This is a serious all-night raving affair so come prepared to lose the plot.

Event: Defected Sessions
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Sandy Rivera, Matt Mau, Kathy Brown (live)
Music: house
Cover: $20
Continuing on with this weekend's musical journey is Sandy Rivera, the major influence behind Kings of Tomorrow. His career as a producer spans 10 years and he has been DJing clubs for approximately 15 years. He's paid his dues and is becoming one of the most sought-after DJs in the world. In addition to being known for his soulful house sound, and famous track, "Finally" (heard in every club last summer), he resides in New Jersey which makes him extra impressive in my book.

Event: Vikter Duplaix
Venue: W Terrazza
DJ's: Vikter Duplaix, Franky Boissy, Travis, Capitol A, Monty Luke
Music: breaks, house
Cover: $20 advance
I met Vikter Duplaix by chance in Puerto Rico over Christmas. He was playing at a tiny bar and no one knew who he was, including me. The locals throwing the night brought the Philly native to my attention. Vikter is a damn humble guy considering his many talents. Duplaix's producer, songwriter, remixer and vocalist credits appear in the liner notes of albums by Erykah Badu, Jazzanova, King Britt’s Sylk 130, The Roots and Jamiroquai to name a few. After playing a mellow and beautiful downtempo set, he mixed it up with some jazzy, percussive house, that rocked the island bar like he will surely rock the Terrazza this weekend.

Event: Cracker Jack
Venue: An Sabin
DJ's: Felix the Dog, Justin, J-Black, Utamu, PhD
Music: breakbeats, house
Cover: $5
There's this guy (I refer to him as the Cracker Jack guy). He e-mailed me and says he applied for my very job a while back. This is how he describes his event:"It's kind of an eclectic, backroom, drunken dancefloor pogo kind of party. Sort of like going to a pub and having a great house party break out or something". I'd say that's a party-description after my own heart!

Sunday

Event: Spundae Nine Year Anniversary
Venue:
Ten 15
DJ's: Carl Cox, Jerry Bonham, Gianni, Taj, Troy Roberts, Jonathan Ojeda
Music: techno, house
Cover: $10 b4 9:30
Carl Cox is the only DJ that is so renown, that you can make a flyer shaped like his head and people will understand it and think it's cool. Speaking of complete superstars, Carl Cox is still the reigning megaclub techno king of the Universe. C'mon you know Spundae, you know Ten 15 and you know Carl Cox. What do you want me to say? If you can go, of course, GO!

Event: Steve Bug
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: Kit Clayton, Sutekh (live)
Music: tech-house
Cover: $10
Blasthaus brings us Further with Steve Bugs, who was voted the 7th best DJ in Germany. I went to Germany, there's a whole lot of DJs there. I am definitely going to check out Steve Bug on Sunday because frankly I'm getting a little sick of house music and I'm ready to get my techno on. In addition to Steve Bugs, will also be local heroes Kit Clayton and Sutekh making music live from their laptops. (Personally I think they throw on a CD and sit there playing Space Invaders.)

Event: Dirty Beats
Venue: Studio Z
DJ's: DJ Rap, Dieselboy, Havoc w/ MC Intalekt
Music: d&b, breakbeats, hip-hop
Cover: $20
2nd Sunday gets Jiggy with breakbeats instead of their typical 4 on the floor event. Two famous and deserving names, DJ RAP and Dieselboy, get down and dirty into the after-hours.

Event: The Pulse
Venue: 550 Barneveld
DJ's: Chris "The Rebel", Pleez, Andrew B, Romeo, Mr. Jon P, Kinetix, Brian, J-Spec
Music: hip-hop, trance, house
