Venue: Club 6
Dj's: Mos Def, Dead Prez, Sake 1, Mr. E.
Music: hip-hop
Cover: $10
After his show at the Berkeley Community Theatre, Mos Def is coming across the Bay to tackle the confines of Club 6. If an intro is necessary, Mos teamed up with Talib Kweli to form Balck Starr and the social consciousness expressed in their lyrics is unmatched in hip-hop. Also at Club 6 will be Dead Prez, who released their last album independently after refusing to tone down their political message, getting them dropped from their label. Two acts more suited for Club 6's undergound atmosphere would be hard to find. Tix (IA)

Friday they are bringing the heat with a Mardi Gras-themed party that will put some salsa into San Francisco. The beats provided by Dreamteamer Laird, Berkeley's own Denise, Ecko and 2wikkend should set the stage, but it's up to you to bring out the carnival costumes that will put this party into overdrive. Evil Breaks and Subscience have joined up to saturate the scene with a good dose of dirtiness in the form of SF breaks, techno and a long-awaited appearance by Future Funk Squad (aka Glen Nicholls). He started producing at age 15, but Future Funk Squad wasn't born until 1999, when a flawed jungle track of Glen's was embraced by DJ Hyper. Producing and remixing breaks ever since, Glen plans to release his debut album this year, so if you're down for the dirty funk, hop to 330 Ritch and hear it first. (DKD)

The genre-defying music of Thievery Corporation will grace San Francisco this weekend at the Regency Grand Ballroom. Take some DJ Shadow, mix with a little Portishead, throw in a pinch of Four Tet then dub it out and you might get somewhat close to Thievery Corporation. This blend of fascinating trip-hop capitalizes on the use of vocals and instruments from throughout the world. A unique sound that seems to morph throughout their albums bringing a serious consciousness to their music. What I mean is they really make you listen, a skill which sometimes gets lost in club land.
