For The Ear
San Francisco has played an
integral part in establishing
electronic music as a legitimate
musical art form. In 1961,
several "composers" took over
the attic of the Conservatory
of Music and formed the SF
Tape and Music Center, using
tape players and delayed playbacks
to create a new genre of music.
They soon developed the first
Buschla analog synthesizer
and incorporated light shows,
multiple tape players and
live theatrics into their
hugely popular local events.
Several grants and a Mills
College training class cemented
electronic music into Bay
Area and world cultures. A
new group has adopted the
SFTMC
name and is doing international
tours in honor of these pioneers.
World music, Bruce Lee soundtracks,
Frank
Zappa songs and dozens
of others are included in
the three-day festival this
week at the ODC theatre. 16
surround-sound speakers, light
shows and more will be in
effect as homage is paid to
the creators and our generation
gets a chance to experience
the roots of electronic music.
Date: Thu.
1/20-Sat. 1/22, Time:
8pm, Place:

$25 | The
soulful, sometimes Emo sounds of Gomez
will be swaying crowds to and fro at The

doesn’t exactly dish out the house bass
but instead provides a very mellow, somewhat
trip-hoppy background for a very chill evening;
or three evenings for that matter. This
could be coffee house discussion music but
has a darker edge, which allows it to be
taken more seriously as well as fill a hall
like The Fillmore. If you want to take a
break from the earsplitting thump of the
subwoofer, check out Gomez this weekend.

Morales may originate from the East
Coast, but his talents have been recognized
throughout the world of electronic dance
music. Morales, who has been fine-tuning
his magic since the '80s, infused his own
Brooklyn-based sound with all the subtleties
and nuances he picked up on an excursion
to England. The result was some highly-circulated
and well-respected early '90s mixes. Adding
to his underground reputation, Morales has
produced for mainstream acts like Mariah
Carey, Michael Jackson and Tina Turner.
Such broad credentials have designated Dave
as a staple in the music making community
and a performer not to be missed. This event
