The Alchemist

Straight from NYC and one of the hottest hip-hop producers of our time, The Alchemist brings all his experience making beats for Mobb Deep, Nas, Fat Joe, Talib Kweli, Cypress Hill and Snoop right here to SF's Space 550. In January 2002 the Alchemist was named one of the top producers of the year by The Source magazine, sharing editorial space alongside names like Dr. Dre, The Neptunes and Timbaland. This year he released his own album which many in the industry believed was long overdue! The album, entitled "Alchemist: 1st Infantry" is comprised of Al's beats and the underground emcees he's worked with and respected along the way. A few of the superstars on the album include Dilated Peoples, Jadakiss, Devin the Dude, Stat Quo and many more. This show would not be possible without support from some of the Bay's best like Toph One, Ren the Vinyl Archeologist. Come support underground hip-hop in SF! Date: Thursday 12/9/04, Time: 9pm, Place: 550 Barneveld, Cover: Presale $20, More Info (JP)

Short Cut to Nirvana
When a film claims to document "the greatest event in human history", it's worth at least checking out to see what the fuss is all about. The Maha Kumbh Mela, or Great Nectar Fair, is a truly astonishing Indian festival that, every 12 years, gathers up to 70 million (yes, MILLION) people near the confluence of the Ganges and Yumana rivers in India. Shortcut to Nirvana is an award-winning documentary on the landmark 2001 festival, notable because it coincided with a planetary alingment seen only every 144 years. The film follows a collection of soul-searchers as the experience one of the most magnificent gatherings of humanity the world has ever known. To celebrate the arrival of the film in SF, Studio Z is throwing an Indian-themed bash with DJ Amar, Cheb i Sabbah, the Dhol Rhythms dance troupe, and many more performers. Proceeds from the party benefit Project Ahimsa, which provides music and training to impoverished youths in India. Date: Thur., 10/9, Time: 8pm, Place: Studio Z (314 11th St.), Cover: $10. 9th Annual Naughty Santa's Black Market
So you've been a good boy or girl this year. In fact, your mom thinks you’re a saint, your other half dotes on your amicable behavior, and your friends can’t get enough of your "mi casa es su casa" attitude. Well, it’s time to put down your niceties and pick up your naughtiness for the deep, dark, black market this Sunday. This alternative crafters fair features handmade gifts by artists from all over the Bay Area. Temptations include calendars by YumFactory and bags by Tina – her story is frightening! There will be Deviant Goods and a visit from VaginaLady. DJ Puss Puss from Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will provide the grooves and dance you through your naughty endeavors. Fashion from Cicamica’s costumes will be displayed by members of the Stilt Dancers Tribe and you’ll also be entertained by Run DMC’s “The Puppet Show”. Be nice come Monday. Sunday is a day to dive into the charcoal, get dirty, think freaky, and jingle jangle those naughty bells all day long. Date: Sun. 12/12, Time: 4-6pm, Place: SomArts (934 Brannan St.), Cover: $6, More Info (AM)

Don't Skip the Double Dutchess
This dynamic quartet of leaping ladies are taking it way back to the playground days. Combining double dutch jump rope with music, theater and a whole lot of attitude, Valtronic, Kate Rock, Little Girl & Switchblade are redefining entertainment as we know it. Costumes are always included and a show's theme can range from "ravers in a K-hole" to "Catholic school girls". No matter the theme, women's roles in society and good old-fashioned silliness are thoroughly explored. This crew first started jumping together in Dolores Park in 2002 as a cheap and fun alternative to the MTV-fed "cool" activities (i.e. DJing, skateboarding, breakdancing). Today they have been written up by the New York Times and will be performing at the Double Dutch Holiday Classic at the Apollo Theatre in New York next week. You can catch the Dutchess at 12 Galaxies, where you're sure to get roped in to a night you won't forget. Date: Friday 12/10/04, Time: 9pm, Place: 12 Galaxies, 2565 Mission St., Cover: $7, More Info (JP)
