A Hip-Hop, Klezmer, House Fusion

Just in time for the holidays! Grab your family and go to "The Bright River". This Jewish theatrical production, which recounts the fiery tale of Dante's "Inferno", combines hip-hop and traditional Jewish Klezmer music. Nope, couldn't make this one up if I tried, but Tim Barsky did and his play was voted "Best Theatrical Production of 2004" in the East Bay Express Reader's Poll. The show is already sold out for the first three weeks of its six-week run, enjoying success only by word of mouth. This dynamic and truly original work incorporates a beatboxer, an experimental hip-hop flutist, street theater and Jewish folklore. DJ Polywog is the woman behind the turntables, and you will no doubt be wooed by some of the Bay's best hip-hop and Klezmer musicians! Now that's something I never thought I'd say... Date: Sat. 12/4, Time: 8pm, Place: Traveling Jewish Theater (470 Florida St.), Cover: After-party $15; Show & Party: $30 (tix include bar), More info (JP)

Spirit - City of Dreams
Giving to the less fortunate is the name of the game this time of year, and this event allows you to have a little fun while helping out kids living on welfare programs in the City. Everybody is pitching in, with DJs donating their valuable time and Element Lounge giving up the space for free. Enticing you to be charitable with sweet eclectic beats are some of the SF's more socially conscious DJs, including Red Melon's JZ, Sunder from Sol System, Dave Mak, and Sister SF diva Melyss. 100% of all proceeds go to City of Dreams' Day of Hope project purchase much needed goods and presents for the children. This is a good chance to get yourself back on Santa's nice list, even while you're acting a little naughty. Date: Fri. 12/3, Time: 10pm-2am, Place: Element Lounge (1028 Geary), Cover: $5-$10 donation. Shopping at Milk
In addition to all the meaningful holiday messages we are bombarded with this season, you never quite feel enough pressure to spend money and buy things (laugh here). But since purchasing presents is inevitable, why not get some cool, non-generic gifts, like the items you might find at the Blue Marlin & Upper Playground Sample Sale? If you are not familiar with these two ultra-hip local sportswear lines, now is your chance to expand your fashion horizons. Blue Marlin features a cool vintage look inspired by old-school sports logos. Upper Playground incorporates graphics by some of SF's most talented street artists, and you can check out their gallery on Fillmore for a preview. The sample sale will include sweet deals on current merchandise, samples, overstock, and one-of-a-kind tees, sweatshirts and more. So ditch the mall crowds, support local businesses and pick up some funky gifts. Since this all takes place at Milk, you can count on DJs spinning hip-hop all day, making for a very non-generic holiday shopping experience. Date: Saturday 12/4, Time: 10am-4pm, Place: Milk (1840 Haight St.), Cover: Free, More Info (JP)

Party in the Valley!
Ok, so it's a bit cold and a few months too late for a proper SF street fair, but when the hippest shopping district in town throws a party, you can bet the fashionistas will flock. The Hayes Valley Urban Artist & Designer's Fair features a variety of crafts and gifts including jewelry, clothing, fashion and home accessories. Plus you can sip wine or hot cider, listen to live music and visit with Santa as you shop. That's sure to get you in the spirit! In addition to the one-of-a-kind gifts sold by vendors, the shops will be extending their hours and inviting you in for sales and festivities of their own. Holiday shopping can be such a drag, so whatever genius invented this shop-while-you-party thing deserves big props. Date: Friday 12/3, Time: 6pm-9pm, Place: Gough & Hayes, Cover: Free, More Info (JP)

SF Faces 2.0
Mayor Newsom is opening up City Hall for a photography show that will display 300 photos featuring "Faces of San Francisco" over the last 50 years. A silent auction will be held to benefit Visual Aid, a non-profit that encourages and allows artists with fatal illnesses to continue their work. The silence will be broken soon enough, though, with Tom Thump and Kramer spinning in the main Rotunda and singer/songwriter Shawn Snyder playing in the North Light Court. Food will be donated by Loft 11, who is also throwing the afterparty, and drinks have been provided by Stella Artois, Mondavi and several others. Hopefully music, art, free food and booze, and a chance to support a great cause can get you out on a Wednesday night.  Date: Wed. 12/1, Time: 5:30-8:30pm (9pm after-party @ Loft 11), Place: SF City Hall Rotunda, Cover: Free (RSVP), More Info (IA)

It's On!
The top ten spots in the DJDreamteam poll are constantly shifting, making for an enthralling ride that concludes in exactly 17 days. Last week we had some brand new names in the top ten, including Smoove, Jondi & Spesh, Goldilox, Lorin, and Laird. Click here to view latest results of the top 30 DJs (results are updated each Tuesday). By the time you read this all that may have changed, but one thing is certain, the progressive and breaks DJs are giving the house syndicate a run for their money. But the question on my mind is: WHERE IS THE HIP-HOP? San Francisco has one of the most innovative and thriving hip-hop communities out there. We got B-boys & girls, mad graff artists, beatboxers, emcees out the ass, and you can't throw a rock without hitting an ITF or DMC champion. So what gives? You heard what P Diddy said, VOTE or DIE. Ok, maybe it's not that extreme but it sure would be nice to show some love and support for this essential part of SF nightlife. What do you think? Let us know by voting here and tell a friend! Toph One is loved by many because he'll not only woo you with his dynamic turntable talents, but also with his sparkling conversation, eloquent red wine toasts and profound wisdom. He has inspired many to dance on bartops, write on themselves with Sharpie markers, and create spontaneous afterparties as a result of his entrancing, eclectic sets. Rarely do you get an opportunity to hear some tight beats and get educated while you're at it. Saul Williams, the writer and actor from the award-winning independent film Slam and the man credited with inspiring the Def Poetry Jam organization, is providing that very chance. He has lectured at universities around the world, published three volumes of poetry, and had his work included in college texts when he was still a teenager. He is prophetic with his words, music and message, and is entertaining to boot. (IA)

Their kind sponsors, KarmaLoop and Pearl Vodka, will be on hand with gift holiday cheer. Come early for free schwag and ultra-discounted drink specials. (SG)

Maybe it's because I was in San Diego for a couple of days, but it sure seems like SF got a whole lot chillier all of a sudden. Roe & Prive seem to have noticed and thankfully, they're doing something about it. Enter Passion, a night of hot beats, a steamy vibe, and three floors of dancing decadence. Ellen Ferrato is in charge of keeping the temperature up with her jazzy, sexy house, and she's out to prove she deserves a repeat spot on the Nitevibe Dreamteam. If you like to keep your feet warm and ass moving to a little R&B and soul, David Caralho and Momentum will be throwing down plenty of warm grooves that are more to your liking. The crowd dresses to impress, so throw a warm coat over that hot little outfit before you head out. (SG)

He connects, he listens, and he feels the crowd as he throws out grooves with so much fluidity that you just can’t leave the floor. Music: house, progressive, hip-hop

Being one of the biggest DJ names in Australia might not seem like too big a deal to some of us (after all, they've still got a soft spot for Kylie Minogue and Vegemite), but Anthony Pappa did it by the time he was 20, which is no small feat. Having conquered the land of Oz, Pappa has since taken on the storied mega-venues of Britain and Europe, making a name for himself on a variety of labels with a slew of multi-layered progressive tracks and remixes. Serving as an American counterweight to Pappa's Euro stylings, Gene Farris' Chicago house and a variety of other sounds will also be on display at 1015, giving you some options in case you want to mix things up. If it was up to me I'd call this party "Bloody Hell and Bloody Marys" because those are the first thing that come to my mind when I open my eyes on Sunday mornings. However "Boogie Brunch" is just as appropriate, with open-air-like ambiance and soul soothing beats that are easy on the aching head. The DJs keep the tempo low, with enough energy to get you in the groove, without asking too much from your worn-out body. Sumptuous plates, mellow music and tasty mimosas are just what the doctor ordered on a Sunday afternoon.
