"It's not where you're from, it's where you're at" Why does some peace-making hip-hop freak always mention those cliché Rakim lyrics when I defend my misunderstood home-state of New Jersey? On the most recent occasion, the freak was none other than a DJ from Future Roots.

Futureroots.com is a site created by DJ KDouble and DJ Huckster. "It's not where you're from..." is the last phrase I would expect to hear from two DJs with such a dedication to music lineage. Their Latin and Afrobeat-jazzy-downtempo-style drips with sounds from Brazil, Africa and Cuba. By combining their appreciation of roots with electronic music, they select tracks which combine the best of both worlds - fulfilling both the "From" and the "At". When traditional world-beat melds with electronic music the results are genres like 2step, bhangra, broken beat and nu-jazz. You can hear DJ sets on the site.

To hear broken beat and nu-jazz on the radio check out "Friday Sessions" the KUSF radio show on 90.3 FM every Friday from 10pm to midnight or live on the net at www.KUSF.org with hosts Andrew Jervis (A&R man of Ubiquity Records) and Tomas Palermo (Editor of XLR8R magazine).

Thursday

Venue: Ten15
DJ's: Sen Sei, David Coleman, Lorin, Children of Paradise, Anon, Alaric, Insect Funeral and Friends, Ritter Gluck, Ikarus, Waterjuice, Elipse, Witchdokta, Double Cross, Soulsalaam, Rasta Cue-Tip+
Music:
house, progressive, hip-hop+

Oh my goodness it's like the dance music county fair! We got DJ's! We got dance performances! We got dance community activists! We got fashion shows! We got lit sculpture things! We got every style of music from techno to soul. We got funnelcake! (I'm just guessing on that one) Proceeds go to the SFLNC.

Event: Word
Venue: Rawhide 2
DJ's: Paul Craven, Capital A, Kazu, Takeshi
Music: Future jazz, soul, house

Cover: $5

This long running hip-hop party from Massive Selector has a rep for keeping you guessing. They play anything from drum and bass and dancehall to the classics. DJ Vinroc's is in the house. The 2X ITF Champion is claimed by the Bay Area. But I bet you didn't know he grew up in the Garden State (that's Jersey, baby)

Event: DoubleFunkCrunch
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: band
Music: funk, disco

Cover: TBA
If you are having a bachelorette party or you are really depressed or you are a depressed bachelorette -I recommend seeing this band. I think they performed at a warehouse party one time and words don't really do it. It's all about 70's and 80's covers and the members have names like Jiffy, Vanilla, Pinky and Sweaty-J.

Friday

Event: Aranji
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: Kemical Kidd, Nuuk, Amber, Jeff Richmond, J:Miah
Music: ambient, breakbeats, trance

Cover:
$10
Last time I went to Aranji, I thought I was in the wrong club. Six gets transformed into this warm glowing flowery ambient art universe where people wear outrageous hats and you can interact with exhibits and other groovy surroundings. That is, with the exception of the trance DJ. I tried to tickle him and he thought I was really weird.

Event: Fridays
Venue: Ten15
DJ's: Icey, Taj
Music:
funky breaks, house
Cover: free before 10:15, $20 after
These are the breaks. The funky ones. DJ Icey from Orlando has remixed everything from Paul Van Dyk to Groove Armada and Deee-lite. Expect an eclectic mix of selections that will bring most ravers to an anaerobic state.

Event: Square
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's:
Gee More, Anita Lofton
Music:
tribal house

Cover: $20
Gee Moore from Bora Bora is actually from the UK. He has been living in Ibiza for the past few years where he regularly destroys the dancefloor with his versatile style- ranging from tribal house to tech to deep and funky house. I'm listening to him as we speak and I had to get up for a minute and dance around the office.

Saturday

Event: Kojak
Venue: Hush Hush
DJ's:
Cool Chris, Vinnie Esparza
Music: funk, hip hop, Afro-Latin styles

Cover: $5
Hey, This is our flyer of the week!
If you hit that link and saw it- that means I figured out how to work the scanner! If not, sorry. It was red with a cool illustration. The party is a sure thing though. These Djs throw down some of the best funk, hip-hop and soul around. As for the the Hush Hush Lounge, it always makes me feel a little dirty -but in a good way.

Event: Marques Wyatt
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: Marques Wyatt, Scarlett Etienne, Riddler?, Seven, Nihal, Nomandeeq
Music: deep house

Cover: $15
Does your Momma know? No, not about that! Of course you wouldn't tell her about that. I'm referring to the name of the party where Marques Wyatt was resident in LA. But that's just the beginning, Wyatt's moody percussive house style has graced clubs worldwide and he was doing it back when you still liked Def Leppard.

Event: Phusion
Venue: 26 Mix
DJ's: Andrew Jervis and Jonah Sharp
Music: broken beat, funky house, nu-jazz

Cover: $5
Do you know how much I don't like spelling "new jazz" like "nu-jazz" ? I tried to fight the power- perhaps you noticed the revolution I attempted in the last few months by spelling it my own way? It's official now though- Andrew Jervis and Jonah Sharp say so. I'm not going to contend with the founders of the Ubiquity (Andrew) and Reflective (Jonah) record labels. What do you think I'm trying to get myself killed?

Event: StapleRefuge
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: DJs Gavin Froome, Luke McKeehan, IZ, Fil Latorre, David Javate, Brian G
Music: deep house, tech house

Cover: $10 before 11pm, $13 after
This particular party is a pain in the ass to describe because there is so much going on. I tried to skip it but my conscience wouldn't let me because it's such a solid event. OK- so On the One and Gimme Shoes are presenting the Nordic Trax Post+Beam Tour featuring Gavin Froome from Canada. Did you get all that? Nordic Trax is the label. Post and Beam is the name of the CD being released. (If you get there early, you might get a free one.) There's gonna be really good house music and tech-house and some jazzier stuff too. This party hosts some of my personal favorite DJs from around the world. There! Now that it's over I'm so glad I did it.

Sunday

Event: Transport
Venue: Galaxy Club
DJ's: Dahrok, Wisdom, Toph-One, Rueben
Music:
hip-hop, soul, breaks
Cover: free before 9pm, $5 after
Drunken Iron Chefs's Battle each other for the Soul-Food-Super-Bowl-Title while DJs
spin selected cuts off of the Jerry Maguire soundtrack! No, I'm joking about the last part, actually the Dj's play underground hip-hop and soul. There is a spoken word session called the Gong Show and an art exhibition called "Just Because" by Krishnakali Chaudhuri who will be showcasing "mixed media abstract expressionism pieces" Just Because he knows what that means.

Event: Superbowl Dance Party
Venue: Kelly's Mission rock
DJ's: Michael Anthony, DJ Christian, Chris n Chris
Music: house

Cover: $5
Oh this has to be the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard. More ridiculous than the hillbilly funk party?- yes. More ridiculous than the party where you come with your identical twin - yes. At this event you dance to exceptional house music and watch the Superbowl at the same time! I can see it now - drunk girls from the Marina bumpin' booties on the dancefloor while staring at the widescreen - someone is going to choke on a pretzel! Let's ask ourselves if this is a risk we really want to take.
