3rd Annual DJDreamteam

Our Annual DJDreamteam Poll is back and with it your chance to give your favorite DJs mad love and all the glory they deserve. These guys and girls are out there hauling records around each night of the week giving us an outlet to move, groove, meditate, proliferate and radiate good vibes through dance music. We have DJs representing all genres including hip-hop, dancehall, house, world, brokenbeat, drum n' bass, breaks, techno and trance. Plus there are plenty of those extra fly cats who defy categorization because they can do it all! The folks here at Nitevibe would LOVE to see some diversity in this year's top DJs, because as you know, they will be our DJDreamteam lineup at a massive event in January. From previous polls we know plenty of people adore house music but this year perhaps you could use some of your other votes (you get up to 5) for a DJ from your second or third favorite genre. Ultimately it's your choice. Your voice is what the DJDreamteam Poll is all about and, as always, your votes directly affect the outcome. So keep it fair, keep it fun and let the voting begin! Ropeadope New Music Seminar
Since 1999, Brooklyn based record label Ropeadope Records has been shelling out the finest in funky jazz, Afro-beat and hip-hop courtesy of some of the most exciting artists of our time including Charlie Hunter, Antibalas, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and DJ Logic. In 2001, the label started the now legendary 'New Music Seminar' which features big name acts, such as the aforementioned artists, together on the same stage for an all out improvised musical jam. The only rule of thumb for these shows is that there are no rules and the music can go on for four hours straight! Luckily for our West Coast ears, we get a chance to catch this amazing seminar for two nights at The Independent. Some of the featured artists include the original jazz guitar stylings of Charlie Hunter with drummer Bobby Previte and DJ Olive, critically acclaimed cellist Matt Haimovitz, the sexy jazz makings of Sex Mob Horns, the Bay Area's own hip-hop stars The Coup and the master of ceremonies is none other than the talented DJ Rich Medina! Funk, Soul, Rock & Hip-Hop
Three talented bands bring funk, soul, rock and hip-hop together under one roof at the Warfield. Heiruspecs have just come out with their new album, A Tiger Dancing, and you should support the underground sound by swinging by your local record shop to pick it up. Their old-school style resembles that of Digable Planets and Run DMC. The Walkmen, influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones, will provide a rock edge to the proceedings. Cake is headlining and will no doubt put on another great performance to round out the night. Their compilations of hip-hop, raw rockin’ beats, and heavy bass lines resonate with fans of many musical tastes, which is why they always pack the place while in town. Event: Coco Rico
Venue: Tunnel Top (601 Bush St. @ Stockton)
DJ's: Vanka, Don Bustamante & guests
Music: Latin, Brazilian & Caribbean rhythms
Cover: Free
There is something about Brazilian and Latin music that can heat up a room and make a party appear out of thin air (not that this packed venue needs any help in that area). Vanka and friends have a deep appreciation for diverse worldly rhythms and the electronic music that so freely borrows from this sound. See what kind of vibe ignites when they take to the turntables above the tunnel. (JP)

Event: Taboo
Venue: Pink
DJ's: David Harness, Sir Charles
Music: soulful house
Cover: $3 - $5
Taboo seems like such a mellow party on such a mellow night. But don’t even think about sittin and chillin at this 'mellow' event. With Nitevibe Dreamteamer David Harness and special guest Sir Charles working the tables, your feet will be stomping from the time you enter the door. There is no pretension or attitudes here, and certainly no taboos. Just bring a pure appreciation for some of the most soulful dance grooves around and hit the floor. (KW)

For those of you who enjoy getting your money's worth at a show, this one is for you! (JC)

Tony Hewitt is one of several who has followed this path to stardom, and his love of the local scene and SF-style house grooves has stayed with him while founding Tango Recordings and getting major play in Europe.
