Beyond
Black Rock
So maybe they're not the very first people to make
a Burning Man documentary. That just means they
had to make theirs better than all the rest! "Beyond
Black Rock" by the Gone Off Deep crew claims to
be the most behind-the-scenes analysis of the desert
festival to date. The film explores artists, theme
camps, staffers, volunteers and every other loving
freak who makes it happen each year (and works to
make it disappear for a week or so after all the
rookies have gone home.) This is your chance to
catch Beyond Black Rock before it officially premiers
at the Santa Cruz film fest the following day. In
addition to the viewing, hors d'oeuvres will be
served at 9pm and local B-man DJs like Laird, Space
Cowboys and Lush crews will be on hand to win over
the dancefloor. Date: Friday 10/8,
Time: 8pm - 4am, Place:
Mighty (119 Utah St.), Cover: $10,

This Ain't Your Grandma's Ballet!
Michael Smuin, the "populist renegade of ballet"
(according to the Chronicle) has dragged classic
ballet, kicking and screaming, out of the stodgy
confines of the classical elite and made it appeal
to our kind of crowd. This latest show, Fly
Me to the Moon, ditches the tutus and dancing
slippers in favor of some high energy gear for its
break-dancing, be-bopping performers. With music
from the Beatles to Willie Nelson and featuring
plenty of ol' Blue Eyes himself, Frank Sinatra,
this crew will show you that there's a lot more
to ballet than you might think. If seeing some of
the best dancers in the world isn't enough enticement,
then perhaps some free champagne and chocolate,
not to mention a chance to show your date you've
got some class, will do the trick. Get out of the
house and get yourself some culture! Date:
Fri. 10/8-Sun. 10/17, Time: varies,
Place: Palace of Fine Arts, Cover:

Festival Express
Do you want to check out a movie showing people
who party harder than you ever will? The restrictions
put on our raves would be a bunch of old news to
this group. The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The
Band and others started the "do what you feel" vibe
that is still so evident in our city, and this week
there's a movie that captures this mentality in
full force. In the summer of 1970, over a dozen
of the era's biggest groups toured across Canada
on a train full of sex, drugs and improvisational
music sets that combined several legendary artists. Picture
Buddy Guy and Jerry Garcia jamming while Joplin
sings, passes out, wakes up, repeats. Date:
Tue. 10/5-Thu. 10/7, Time: 7:15

new music to as many places as I can, and expose obscure records
that, otherwise, might go hidden." This is a job he does very
well. (KW) |
