The Message is Love

If you have never attended the original Love Parade in Germany... good! We're starting from scratch. But before we show the world how SF gets down and dirty in the streets, it's crucial to seize the concept in which the parade was founded on 15 years ago in Berlin. The million raver march began as a demonstration with the purpose of celebrating dance music, and spreading respect, and peace throughout our planet. The love spread to Austria, England, Israel and South Africa and finally to our first annual parade in SF complete with over 150 DJs, booming soundsystems pounding beats of every flavor, floats, amazing vibes and endless party people dancing their way from Embarcadero towards SBC Park. The journey ends with a massive blowout dance fest complete with vendors supplying nutrients (and cocktails) for the weary. Break out the Burningman costume and wear comfortable shoes because you're in for some lovin' like you never had before. Date: Sat. 10/2, Time: 1pm, Place: begins Mission & Beale St., Cover: $5 donation. More Info (JP)

RESFEST Digital Film Festival

The 8th Annual RESFEST is traveling to 33 cities on 6 continents and is the largest festival of it's kind. The showcase of selected short films, music videos, motion designs and guest speakers include never-before-seen treasures and highly celebrated works by the world's most original and acclaimed digital artists. Jonathan Glazer will be honored for his exceptional cinematic innovation in commercials, his feature film Sexy Beast, and the music videos he created for UNKLE's Rabbit in Your Headlights. The 15th birthday of the UK's Warp Records will be celebrated for their pioneer status in music video artistry for groups like Aphex Twin and Squarpusher. Among the plethora of exciting short flicks, the feature film Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme documents underground DJs and MCs in the early 80's and explores the art-form and cultural significance of spontaneous rhyme. MC Supernatural, Mos Def, and J-5 are featured among other well-known hip-hop artists. With the influx of a little extra technology, RESFEST takes "pure viewing satisfaction" to an entirely different dimension. Date: Thurs., 9/30 - Sun. 10/3 Place: Palace of Fine Arts. More Info (DKD)

Arab Film Festival
In a world rife with cultural conflict, it's important for people to be reminded of the beauty and humanity that lie beyond our usual perceptions of others. The 8th Annual Arab Film Festival aims to teach, entertain and enlighten with a very diverse series of works that examine the culture and experiences Arabs and Arab-Americans. The inescapable influences of war, terrorism, and the prejudices they breed are a dominant theme in works such as About Baghdad and Forbidden to Wander. However, balance is achieved with stories of love and humorous looks at everyday life in Sleepless Nights and Travail d'arabe. The festival runs from the 2nd to the 24th at various Bay Area theaters, and the Opening Night Reception at the Castro Theater promises to be an extra-special affair replete with music and arabic mazza. When misconceptions are threatening to tear the world apart, opportunities such as this to examine, understand, and enjoy other cultures shouldn't be missed. Date: Sat. 10/2 - Sun 10/24. More Info (SG)

Castro Street Fair
A street that ranks up with Fifth Avenue, Park Avenue, and Pennsylvania Avenue as one of the most popular thoroughfares in the world, the Castro is having its annual summer's-end bash. The Castro Street Fair, in its 31st year, is a full day party welcoming every gay, straight or slanted soul and spirit. As expected, you'll find the usual cool vendors seen at street fairs around the city, but what makes this event great are the dance areas. Rising to the occasion, just as it always has, the Fair will be featuring three stages spinning everything from country to hip-hop; music as diverse as the community that has made this street so famous. Date: Sunday 10/3, Time: 11am-6pm, Place: Castro St. and Market St. b/t 16th and 19th, Cover: Donation. More Info (KW)

Reggae in the Park
Global Exchange is collecting talent with ancestry from Caribbean, Africa, and other parts of the world this weekend to celebrate Rastafarian tradition and culture. The beats of the bongo will resonate through the park and culinary delights will ooze cultural flavors. Saturday will present the worldly sounds of five men who make up Abijah with Boom Shaka. They have just come out with their album release Fertile Ground now available in stores. The headliner, coming straight from Jamaica to the grass of Golden Gate park, is the effervescent Toots and the Maytals. Toots Hibbert incorporates gospel from his youth into the Jamaican rhythms and ska beats we recognize as reggae music today. Sister Soul will sing like “Mother Culture” herself on Sunday as she musicates and enculturates the crowd with her voice. You won’t want to miss this concert as you are taken through the throes and throngs of the Rastafarian world via music and song. Date: Saturday & Sunday, October 2nd & 3rd, Time: 11 a.m.-6 p.m. each day, Place: Sharon Meadow, Golden Gate Park, Cost: $22 in advance, $27 on-site, $40 in advance two day pass, discounted youth tickets.
