Give
me root vegetables, give me hardwood floors, give me '70s film stock,
give me thrift-style wool sweaters,
give me eco-technology, give me big clubs charging $5 for entry, give
me non-gloss paper, give me danceSafe-tested E, give me people playing
real instruments.
Real! I think it's the newest trend. Perhaps
that's a result of everyone being broke: lack of 9-5, combined with
9/11 and a re-evaluation of priorities. Who knows? But somehow this
issue of Buzz ended up focusing on the sultry-flavored, chiller-side
of sound. The organic sounding stuff. Speaking of which....
Who wants to see Thievery Corporation? We

plus other mediums I've never even heard of, into the Bay Area's subculture
since 1992. That's not about to stop either. Read about some of the
artists up their sleeve for February. Check out the Blasthaus
site for dates and ticket info, and take a peak at their
upcoming talent line-ups: Thievery

WMC

we'll need to put our money where our mouth is by Feb 4th. I'll need
an idea of how many are interested, so please respond here

in case.

For now, check out the flyer's art nouveau influence. The design is
a collaboration between Vibrata
and Sur
Yummy.
Did someone say they
wanted some completely off-the-hook live jazz with hip-hop MCs? You
have one more chance to catch the party, Jones!,
featuring Alphabet Soup/Broun Felinis and Toph One. It's on Tuesday,
January 29, at the Justice League.
Back-at-ya...
"Tell
Us Your Dream" in the MLK edition last week led to a few responses
we'd love to share with you. Keep them coming, we will keep posting
them (although we had to edit 'em a bit). Send to I
have a dream:
1)
I have a dream that everything was legal so people would set up their
own personal limitations and morals.
2) I have a dream that major dance clubs stay open till we're ready
to move on.
3) I have a dream that that people would stop wasting paper on flyers
and send e-mails instead
4) I have a dream that everyone in the world would take E at the same
time and play a worldwide game of Frisbee
5) I have a dream that the surface of the earth felt like those blow-up
jumpy houses at county fair

Thursday
Event: Passenger
Venue: Skylark
DJ's: Paul Craven, Capital A, Kazu, Takeshi
Music: Future
jazz, soul, house
Cover: Free
Apparently, I'm supposed to "bring my open mind and let my spirit
fly". That's a lot to ask. How about if I openly drink spirits and
mind that my fly is zipped instead? Paul Craven's night of jazzy,
percussion-inspired sound is a delightful way to spend Thursday.
Event: Bored Collective
Venue: 26 Mix
DJ's: Jonah Sharp, Blacktronics
(live)
Music: melodic
techno, hip-hop
Cover: $5
Expect silly, obscene, profound, eclectic stories that would only
be told at a loft gathering circa 3:30am on a Saturday night before
the drugs wear off. We're talking DJs, writers, producers and other
professional party people bonding publicly about the alternate Universe
known as Clubland. The music is as exceptional as the words. Some
say there's a fine line between creativity and self-help. (FYI, if
you break up the above sentences correctly -- it makes up nine-line
haiku.)
Event: n:Code
Venue: DNA Lounge
DJ's: The Fresh Blend, Ritter Gluck, Shane
Music:
techno, jungle, industrial
Cover: Free
b4 10pm, $5 b4 11pm, $7 after
Techno, jungle and industrial! That's some heavy shit. That's
like chocolate and peanut butter! Go on with your bad ass, energetic,
Aphex-Twin-dance-music selves.
Friday
Event: De Luxe
Venue: 550 Barneveld
DJ's: Mazi, M3, Laron, N8 Castro, Shane, Samo, Laird,
Dawn of Sound, Tom Thump, Efrem, Craig Kuna
Music: deep house, progressive, downtempo
Cover: $15
DJ Mazi is the headliner and since you probably know the other
11 DJs in this lineup, I'm just gonna tell you about him. Mazi is
from Chicago: he does more before 10am than most DJs do all day. He
remixes, produces and DJs. He's released over 80 records in six years.
Expect deep house but not wimpy house, complex drums, heavy bass lines.
Event: Smash Celebration for Super
Heroes
Venue: Butter
DJ's: Mikecho, Q, Kemek the Dope Computer
Music:
techhouse, progressive, new school breaks
Cover: Free
Holy silliness, Batman! Do you know how much I love the sound of
this party? Socialmatrix requests that you come as your favorite Superhero.
Maybe I'll be "Drunk Girl" and fight off evil with my super-obnoxious
comments! The possibilities are endless! So put those tights on and
be judged in the best way possible: for a chance to win lift tickets
to Sierra Tahoe! Oh, and luckily this is an early thing (6-11pm),
when most superheroes have their down-time.
Event: Square
Venue: Ruby Skye
DJ's: Andy Caldwell, David Coleman & Sen-sei
Music: house,
progressive
Cover: $20
It's Sextet night! I'm not sure what that means actually, but I
know Andy Caldwell is the fantastic aural innovator behind Soulstice.
I know that David Coleman and Sen-sei are regularly rockin' the dance
floor with some serious house, and that if you're looking for a place
to have men buy you drinks all night, this is in my Top Five.
Event: Bay Area Legends
Venue: Bas
DJ's: DJs Myke One, DJ De', Jah Yzer, DJ
Fuze, Papa Joe & Derrick D
Music: hip hop, breaks, soul,
reggae
Cover: $10
Yvette and Mass Appeal present hip-hop from some true veterans.
I was skeptical for a minute -- the use of the term "legend" should
not get tossed around lightly. Slick Rick is a legend, Grandmaster
Flash is a legend, but then what does this East Coaster know? So I
consulted with a very reliable, born, raised, and still holding it
down SF source who confirmed that yes, these cats have been here pioneering
the scene. DJ Fuze from Digital Underground, Papa Joe and Myke One
especially. Stay up.
Saturday
Event: Orgy Mardi Gras Masquerade
Venue: 550 Barneveld
DJ's: DJs Yomanda,
Gene Farris, Armann the Brainchild, Mark Tabberner, Jaysen, Andrew
D, Keun-Ji, Jaxx the Ripper, David Garcia, Joey Mazzola, Ron Reeser,
Kosho, Jay Walker +
Music: trance,
techno, tech house,deep house, progressive
Cover: $30
The real question I suppose is what isn't it? Brainchild Ent. put
together another massive gigantic over the top event spanning all
music genres. "What next" you ask, "are they going to drop money from
the sky?" Why yes! And they ought to for the price they charge to
get in. What else? We got a money/balloon drop, free Mardi Gras beads
and some unexplained delicious delights. Did I mention the costume
theme is "Wildest Revealing Mardi Gras Outfits"? I think they should
add "...Gone Wild" to the end of that theme but that's just me.
Event: OM
Venue: DNA
DJ's: Johnny Fiasco, Fred Everything, Rithma,
Lorin, Eric Riggsbee
Music: funky deep house, breakbeats

Cover: $15 b4 11pm, $20 after
Frogger is on didjeridoo -- thank god. I've been wondering where
I was going to get my next didjeridoo fix. We have talked about this
party before. You know that this is the Om Record label monthly showcasing
the best international house DJs. Don't miss Chicago's Johnny Fiasco
and Montreal's Fred Everything. I seriously appreciate the didjeridoo-
no joke.
Event: Funktion
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Dizzy, Michael Anthony, Samo, N8 Castro, Shane
Music: tribal
house, funky house
Cover: $10 w/ camouflage, $15

The theme is Safari which is especially useful. Did anyone else
stop wearing camouflage since the war started? After laying down some
serious cash for this Nicole Miller camo sweater, I took it out of
closet-rotation because it reminded me of the death and destruction
being inflicted on our planet. Now here come the Funktion geniuses giving new life to camo with
their safari theme party. Let's think about animals tonight as we
get down to the tribal house.
Sunday
Event: Spundae
Venue: Ten15
DJ's: Charlotte the Baroness,
Madame Mercury, Dawn of Sound
Music: house,
techno
Cover: $15
Women of Bass! It's about freakin' time. Please check out these
incredible DJs as
they put your just-learned-to-beatmatch sorry-asses to shame.
Event: Zinzibar
Venue: Voodoo Lounge
DJ's: Soulsalaam, Playground
(live), Emcee Dust, Justice Served (hip hop quartet live)
Music: hip hop, breaks, funk, 2 step, dub +
Cover: $5
Guess what I did? Named this new Afrobeat, free jazz, 2step, Brazilelectro
party.
That's right. I know you're envious that I am an official party-namer
and you are not. But you know, it takes experience and it takes soul
searching.... OK, I'm exaggerating. What really happened is that the
promoter, Neil, let me choose between two names. But he's never met
me before. Isn't that cool? He also wanted to let everyone know that
Zinzibar means "fresh ginger" which fights cold and flu symptoms.
Event: Dubmission
Venue: Elbo Room
DJ's: JBoogie, Sep
Music: dub,
reggae, dancehall
Cover: $4
Why are there so many reggae parties on Sunday? Alternative to
church?
We need to spread the reggae parties all through the week. But you
know who I would never expect to move? Dubmission has been around
a long-ass time. Their mission is dub and they faithfully deliver
that and much more.
