For
the past 6 years the Power
to the Peaceful Festival put on by Michael
Franti and his group Spearhead
has been bringing together conscientious members
of the SF community for an afternoon of music,
art galleries, social justice workshops and speeches
from noted celebrities and politicians. This year
the theme is “Stand Up and Be Counted” in an effort
to drive people to the polls in the upcoming
November elections. A positive political message
and community ties are closely intertwined with
solid DJ and band acts – Ellen Ferrato, Laird,
Ren the Vinyl Archeologist, Gift of Gab (Blackalicious)
and the String Cheese Incident, among many others.
A kid-friendly festival, it also offers a yoga
zone and numerous tables for social and environmental
organizations along with green-friendly food
vendors. Date:

Know
Your DJ: Adam Freeland Name:
Adam Freeland. Origin: London,
England. Style: Breakbeat. Regarded
As: The "king of nu-skool breaks". In the
mid-90's, when Freeland wrote "nu-skool breaks"
on the flier for his next party, the
term was quickly adopted by the emerging sub-genre.
Freeland is a major pioneer and global ambassador
of the breakbeat sound and scene. Always a
hi-fi geek, Adam spent his college years immersed
in the deep house scene, then moved into breaks,
where he began the Friction parties with
Rennie Pilgrem. In 1998, Freeland ranked
#34 on the UK's DJ Magazine reader poll of the world's
Top 100 DJs. The same year, he started his now highly-esteemed
record label Marine
Parade, and releases the work of such artists
as Evil Nine and Ils. He's been resident at
prestigious London club Fabric
since it opened in '99, and recently released a CD
on it's FABRICLIVE label. Once he wraps up his
We Want Your Vote tour through America
next month, Freeland will spend a year
in continual summer as he travels the globe
from Asia to the UK, working to strengthen
the global breakbeat presence every step of
the way. Date: Fri, 9/10, Time:
10pm-6am, Place: Mighty, 119 Utah
