Doin' It in the Park

Nitevibe Buzz

This outdoor DJ festival will not include long lines or a stage so far away you'd rather watch it on TV. There will be no "rave tent", drugged out frat boys passed out on the lawn or vendors selling tour T-shirts. Its "Doin It In the Park" and this is my kind of Labor Day party! Join in on the family vibe as 20 of the Bay Area's most beloved hip-hop, funk & reggae DJs fire up the BBQ, break out the volleyball and play TUG a WAR in Golden Gate Park. There will even be one of those blow-up Airjumper things for the kids. Meanwhile all the Mami's and Papi's can get down to the underground sounds of The Triple Threat Crew (Apollo, Shortkut, Vinroc), the complex boys of KUSF's Beatsauce (JBoogie, Wisdom & Raw B) and the irie sounds of Jah Warrior Shelter and more. A (Free!) outdoor party and BBQ is how these talented young men and women are giving back to their fans in the community. All you need to do is show up and revel in the labor of these dedicated beat slangers. Date: Sun. 9/5, Time: noon - 6pm, Place: Elk Glen Area (25th & Lincoln), Cover: Free, More Info (JP)

Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound System
In celebration of Dub Mission's 8 year anniversary party, resident and founder DJ Sep has brought in innovative U.K. producer Adrian Sherwood for an evening of heavy dub sounds. Sherwood's dub legacy runs deep, with over two decades as the label head of On-U Sound, which has released over 100 albums and helped launch the career of many a reggae icon such as the late Prince Far I and Bim Sherman. A wide variety of internationally known artists have also had Adrian's production credits on their liner notes including Lee Perry, Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails to name a few. What separates Sherwood from his contemporaries is his determination to put out music that he believes in. By pushing the envelope of original roots through times when most people considered "roots" to be a thing of the past, Sherwood's passion for reggae and dub has always shined through. He's also been a major influence in the development of music technology which has helped other forms of electronic music to take shape (ie house, hip-hop etc.) with his unique mixing style and techniques. Dub Mission residents DJ Sep, Vinnie Esparza, Maneesh the Twister, J-Boogie and Ludichris will also be on hand. Date: Sunday, September 5, Time: 9pm-2am, Place: Elbo Room, Cover: $15 pre-sale, $17 door. More Info (JC)

The Art & Soul Festival in Oakland is a massive display that puts most of San Francisco's street festivals to shame (no offense but its true!) There will be numerous dance performances from all around the world, a fashion show and a kid's stage. Oakland is sure to fly off the hinges with this kind of celebration going down in the streets! Check out the site for the full line-up. Date: Sat. 9/4, Sun. 9/5, Mon. 9/6, Time: 11am - 5pm, Place: downtown Oakland, Cover: $5. More Info (JP)

Happy Birthday to me! If you want to celebrate with this Nitevibe editor, head to Haight St. tonight for Bless Up at Milk. I was passionate about reggae and dancehall long before my first rave, so I'm celebrating with beats of the highest quality from the record crates of the Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-FI Djs. The place was packed last Tuesday night making for a most celebratory atmosphere but this week we're going to tear it up B-day style. (JP)

Event: Hugger Mugger
Venue: Lit Lounge
Dj's: Juan Segovia, Andy W, Clairity, Forest Green, Shazbot, Basura, Jeff D

It's Tech-on Tuesday, so allow this crew to fulfill your appetite for bpm, stuffing you full of dirty bass with every spoonful. With special guests Basura and Jeff D, its time to get ill. Hit this party up at the new DJ bar Lit (formerly POW!) and the weekend will be here before you know it. (DKD)

An even bigger takeover ensues with the Rhythym Method crew and lovely locals Lady Miss B and Controlled Substance taking it up a notch for the epileptic elite on the dancefloor. Watch and get down in amazement as elbows and legs gesticulate with reckless abandon to killer drum beats and grooved-up jungle rhythms unleashed for die-hard dnb fans! (GR)

The vibe here is dance heavy, so check the attitude at the door. (KW)

Event: L'Originale
Venue: Rosewood
Dj's: Herve, Jerry Ross
Music: hip-hop
Cover: $5
True to its name, L’Originale is uniquely different from run-of-the-mill commercial hip-hop parties. It’s a place where North Beach inhabitants mix well with Hpnotiq sipping hip-hop aficionados producing a very sexy crowd synthesis. Grab a drink and chill out on leather couches before taking a stroll through the dance floor to sweet French-influenced beats from the resident DJs. (JM)

Event: Satellite
Venue: Anu
Dj's: Tim Skinner, Scott Carelli, David Gropper

That continuous yearn for edgy progressive beats that happens right after Qool's weekly happy hour can now be fulfilled. Remedy: a post-Qool party at Anu, starring residents Scott Carrelli and David Gropper (and, making a special appearance this week) Tim Skinner from John Digweed’s Bedrock label. Event: One World (Bebel Gilberto listening party)
Venue: Levende (1710 Mission St.)
Dj's: DJ Soulsalaam + percussionists, DJ Surech
Music: Brazilian pop, bossa nova, soul
Cover: $7
Bebel's sound is considered Brazilian pop where she comes from but to us, her exotic silky vocals could do laps around America's version of pop music. If you have not heard this young sexy singer yet, you better get on it. She was all the rage 2 years ago and her latest album, Tanto Tempo has her right back on top again. No she won't be live at Levende but she will have quality Djs playing her tracks and more from the vibe which influenced her sound – like her superstar father Joao and step-mom, Astrud who made a similar smash in the 1960's. (JP)

Event: Cargo
Venue: Rx Gallery 132 Eddy
Dj's: Dj W, Chahe Demian (live), Sueno, Dj Forest Green
Music: deep house, dub, techno
Cover: Free b4 10pm, 5 after
I don't care if it's commercial trance they're playing at RX (thank God it's not) but I'd still come back for that insane pomegranate sake cocktail. This gorgeous little underground gallery in an unpleasant neighborhood is where I plan on spending plenty of time in the next few weeks. Friday it's deep dubby house, emotive techno and a few musical surprises that will keep the dance floor on it's toes. (JP)

Event: John Digweed
Venue: Mezzanine
Dj's: John Digweed, Desyn Masiello
Music: progressive house, trance

It's a long weekend and everyone looks forward to not working. Except, of course, for those poor DJs working long into the wee-hours. The UK's world-famous progressive master John Digweed has to work at 10 o'clock on a Friday night, at Mezzanine for Spundae of all things. Too bad for him, too good for us! Digweed is regarded by many as the top progressive DJ in the world, and his Bedrock label as well as his work with the like of Carl Cox, Paul van Dyke, and his long collaboration with Sasha attest to that lofty praise. (RW)

Venue: Milk
Dj's: Sake 1, Hakobo, Kento, Rasta Q-Tip, Tom Thump
Music: funk, hip-hop, disco, house
Cover: $10
R.I.P. Rick James, Bitch! Sadly, the superfreak himself has passed on but he left with us a legacy of dirty beats which has played a crucial role in much of today's popular music. Rick James and his fellow funkateers is the foundation of hip-hop and lends major influence to genres such as house, techno & d-n-b. Funk music is the original political, fun loving, get-down-all-night, make-out-with-your-neighbor attitude which raves falsely lay claim to. If you want to go deep into electronic music history, study up on the FUNK! This is what the Rick James tribute is all about. (JP)

Event: Rockstar

Cover: Free b4 10pm
Tokyo Electric goes big at Luna Lounge for Labor Day. Get your dose of electro, techno, Italo Disco and more with a band of local DJs that just don't give a damn about what is popular in the megaclubs. They play whatever they want and, in my opinion, San Francisco needs way more of that. (JP)

Event: Devotion
Venue: EndUp
Dj's: Joe Claussell, Ruben Mancias

Joe Claussell, a legendary figure in NYC's house music scene, is taking to the decks of Devotion. This much-loved veteran of the late disco era has to his credit two record labels, Spiritual Life Music and Ibadan, which have given us some of the best dance grooves around. The identifying tag of Claussell's sound is the successful mix of Brazilian, Caribbean, Latin, and oh yes, soulful rhythms flowing directly to the soul; something the devoted crowd is about to feel. (KW)

Event: FLOAT

Dj's: Dave Onex, Big Bad Bruce
Music: house, hip-hop, 70s, disco, funk

Float has been sailing along for quite awhile in the rarefied air of Harry Denton's Starlight Room. DJ Bruce spins all the dance hits for an upscale party crowd. This class-act event is ending up on a Sunday this week, instead of its normal Wednesday spot. I'm guessing it's because most of us have Monday off to float around and party. (RW)

Event: Spundae
Venue: Mezzanine
Dj's: Junkie XL (Live), Christopher Lawrence, Gabriel & Dresden
Music: progressive
Cover: $15 presale, $20 door
No big 3-day weekend would be complete without a blow-out Spundae party. Born Tom Holkenburg, Junkie XL is a Dutch producer who moves swiftly between different electronica genres whilst bringing out the hands-in-the-air energy from the party revelers. Gabriel & Dresden are the creative geniuses behind Motorcycle's global hit “As The Rush Comes In.” LA based DJ/Producer Christopher Lawrence has been my personal favorite for a number of years but more importantly he was dubbed “America’s Top Trance DJ” by UK’s MUZIK magazine and a “DJ Superstar” by URB. (JM)

Dj's: Dimitri Mykonos, DJ Torque, Tony Russel, Slick D, Chris Fenton, Danny Brown
Music: house
Cover: $20 presale
I've been trying to find a fun pool scene for years in the Bay Area and besides Bambuddha, there truly isn't much to find. It's quite a shame but for us sun and water worshipers, Valhalla isn't too far away and W in Newark has a pool.  Dimitri Mykonos will be floating sounds through the hot summer air and over barely dressed bodies at this South Bay party. Grab your sunnys and your suit and hold court poolside at the Dub. (RW)
