That's because Revolution's superb mastery of turntablism has helped elevate the status of underground hip-hop by making the Wake Up Show the most wide-spread hip-hop radio program in the world, with 12 million listeners. For those that are counting, that means he is the most listened to DJ in the world. It also must mean that he is pretty damn good at what he does. Ellen Ferrato vs. M3, Chris Haycock and TK Disco? At first this may appear like a lopsided battle of house ingenuity. It's more about that underground Green Gorilla love. (JP)

This seasoned vocalist and producer represents the soulful and funkier sounds of his hometown of Detroit and was the keyboardist for George Clinton's P-Funk for a decade. Think silky smooth vocals, soulful keyboard jams and a backing band creating the tightest of bumpin' beats, and you have a good idea of what it's all about for the man called Amp. The UK's Will Holland (AKA Quantic) could easily be considered by many to be a musical prodigy at 23. This young musician combines heavy influences of funk soul and jazz to create funky dancefloor filler that's as fresh as the clean pair of socks you put on this morning. His most recent solo release Mishaps Happening (Ubiquity Records) has received critical acclaim for its beat-friendly originality. Quantic will certainly be armed to the gills with stacks of 7" rare groove gems to make this month's edition of Hella Tight well worth checking out. The Groove Merchant's own Cool Chris opens this funky beat affair along with residents Vinnie Esparza, Jonny Deeper and Asti Spumanti. (JC)

Event: Soda
Venue: Rx Gallery (132 Eddy St)
Dj's: The Fresh Blend, Philip Sherburne,
Music: techno, house, electro, acid
Cover: $3-5
Soda bubbles up to the surface the most neglected of SF genres -- the minimalist house and techno of labels like Kompakt and Perlon; deeper fare from imprints like Playhouse; and rumbling acid redux from Output, Alter Ego, and more. If you have not heard of at least one of these names, it's time to venture out of the mega clubs and experience some true originality in San Francisco. The dance floor will be going strong and the sake cocktails are to die for. This is the ultra hip underground, but don't worry their friendly. (JP)
