Can
You Jack the Funk? If
you want to be taken seriously in today's electronic
music scene you have to know at least a bit about
the history of house music. Saturday is your chance
as two of the scene's founding fathers set out to
teach the dancefloor an epic lesson at Club 6. Chicago
natives Farley
Jackmaster Funk and Jesse
Saunders will show you the roots of the 4-4
beat. Jesse Saunders is credited with making the
very first "house" track, entitled "On and On."
Farley Jackmaster Funk had the first house song
on the international Top 10 charts with his cover
of Isaac Hayes' "Love Can't Turn Around." Both were
instrumental in defining house music as an important
genre all its own. If you don't believe me, read
the books! "What Kind of House Party is This?" and
Saunders' own "House Music...the Real Story" show
you how this genre really came to be. House Music
101 starts this Saturday and the only prerequisite
is that you know how to shake your ass. Date:
Saturday 8/7, Time: 10pm - 4am,
Place: Club 6, 60 6th St., Cover:
$10.

Portland's hip-hop trio of Lifesavas

Jazz-influenced beats combined with a fluid Jamaican under-current
and sense of humor make up the sound of Lifesavas. The Bay Area's

enough to bring the people together. Iz throws down the
main house beats at this weekly gathering, with rotating mystery guests

Trent is one of the few djs whose talents have been featured
in Forbes Magazine. Starting out in the Chicago house scene
at age 15, Trent has a deeply-planted stake in defining house
music as we know it today. His distinctive style of combining
classics with keyboard and drum beats says that jazz was his
early inspiration, but tonight the devoted crowd will feel in
their bones the soulful sounds that have made Ron Trent known
worldwide. Resident Ruben
Mancias will also be throwing out the spirit to the masses
who flock to Devotion every week. (KW) |
