Nitevibe Buzz

'Tis the season for feminist fun, so hit up this four-day festival, where the talents of women and transgender folk in music and the arts will be showcased and celebrated. LadyFest Bay Area 2004 features an upbeat series of events in music, visual art, spoken word, performance theatre, and educational workshops. For most guys, it's the most enjoyable way to explore the world of Lady...that is, outside of the bedroom of course. A special highlight is Dj Night at Sublounge, where the all-female line up will get dirty behind the decks and crank out ear candy you man-groovers will fully appreciate. Nitevibe's Dreamteam DJ, Ellen Ferrato will spin those funky house grooves of hers spanning the music genres to deliver a bass-centered set custom tailored to the crowd and vibe. With Charlotte the Baroness and other mistresses of beat-chemistry, this all-female dj night will be seductive and all-encompassing. Date: Friday 7/30 Time: 10pm-2am Place: Sublounge, 628 20th @ 3rd Cover $10. More Info (DKD)

Mala Rodriguez
Anyone tired of hearing the same twenty hip-hop songs on rotation with the same three topics covered: clubs, ass and money? If you're looking for something fresh, look to Spain. Female emcee, Mala Rodriquez headlines Slims this week with a whole lotta conviction and talent enough to earn her a nomination for her latest album, "Alevosia" at this year's Premios de la Musica Awards (think Spanish Grammy's). Her rhymes are based on her own urban experiences from the hood in her native city of Sevila. Flamenco guitar contribute to a unique beat that even P Diddy or JayZ haven't thought to rip off yet. Though most of the lyrics are in Spanish, there is an authenticity which shines through the music making Jenny from the Block look like a pawn-shop clerk. Date: Sunday 8/1, Time: 8pm, Place: Slims 333 11th St., Cover: $15, More Info (JP)

Event: !!!
Venue: Great American Music Hall
Dj's: !!! (live), with Deerhoof, Frausdots
Music: dance punk
Cover: $15
Pronounced "chk, chk, chk" or any other fun repetitive sounds you can think of, this seven piece outfit throws down a heavy dose of punk energy combined with electronic sounds which in their own words make for "party inspired music." For !!!, it's all about creating music to dance to and when these seven punks turn up the volume to do what they do best - jam - you'll be sweating in no time. But remember, just because the term "jam" is often used to describe this band's style, don't expect to see any hippies dancing around at the show. !!! performs along with indie rockers Deerhoof and Frausdots tonight at The Great American Music Hall. Don't sleep on this one! (JC)

Event: Rotation
Venue: Dragon Bar
Dj's: Chris Clouse, DJ Solomon
Music: acoustic rock, house
Cover: $5
Rotating DJs? Its been done. But try rotating a DJ into singer-songwriter Chris Clouse's mellow blend of folk-rock. Clouse sasses conventional grooves pouring house beats, fiddle, pop, acoustic guitar and funk over the crowd and letting it take hold. This is not soul-patched, coffee house, folksy dribble. This is music to move to. (RW)

Event: Sidestepper
Venue: The Independent
Dj's: Sidestepper (live) + Albino!
Music: Latin electronica
Cover: $15
UK producer and musician Richard Blair, was originally known for his work in the dnb arena. That was until Blair took a visit to Colombia and was completely engulfed in the elements of salsa and the Latin culture. By using his knowledge as an electronic beat technician, Blair fuses the steppings of drum n' bass with a perfect amount of tropical percussion and horns. At last his alias "Sidestepper" has been set free and should really be witnessed to feel the energy of the nu-wave of Latin dance music he so effortlessly creates. (JC)
