North Beach Jazz Fest
It’s summer time again which means fog but along with the ghastly gails come festivals, lots of them. Kicking off this week is the tenth annual North Beach Jazz Festival, which runs for five days. From Bimbo’s 365 Club to Velvet Lounge to Washington Square Park, the sounds of saxophones will saunter through North Beach. Promising to be one of the highlights of the festival is the 15 piece funk-laden Realistic Orchestra playing at Velvet Lounge on Wednesday. Leader of the orchestra and local trombone player Adam Theis will go on at 11 pm and blow into the night. To expand your worldly jazz repertoire check out Bimbo’s 365 Club on Friday to see Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, O-Maya, and DJ Soulsalaam. The Afro-Latin hip-hop will no doubt ignite the dance floor. Keep the party rolling on Saturday at 7 pm with Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra. This 60 member group's MC’s and DJ’s have their beats served up by members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic creating a sound that you just can’t get from turntables. See NB Jazz Fest website for complete lineup. Date: Wed. 7/28 -Sun. 7/1 Time: Check site for times, Place: Check site for venues, Cover: $15-$40 tickets, More Info (RW)

Olympic Fever
InProductions & Puma Present "The Trials," a twisted genius celebration of the Olympics taking place at several bars over the next month or so including an "Opening Ceremony." The point is to increase the Olympic Fever in SF with “pseudo” competitions between DJ’s & musicians from a spectrum of nationalities. Each trial will correspond to a specific sport. The massive lineup includes names like Lady la Star (France), Pheeko Dub Funk (Italy), Joe Livingston (USA), the Tokyo Component (Japan) and well...you get the picture. The Olympic venues include Soluna, Voda, Loft 11, The W and more. Your best bet is to see the lineup and plan out which event you want to witness. Are you a long-jumper or is discus more your style? Check out the site and let the games begin! Date: 7/9 - 8/13, Time: check website, Place: check website, Cover: varies, More Info (JP)

Take it Back: SF Beats for Kerry/Edwards
If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention” said the bumper sticker I saw the other day, another reminder of popular discontent with the present administration. With SF being a bit left of center, it’s no wonder a collective of progressive DJs would align themselves with Concerts for Kerry, a group that has raised over $159,000 for John Kerry election campaign. Aided by Give Foundation and fellow DJs and promoters, Ninety Nine created a little engine that could – SF’s only large scale dance party for the Kerry/Edwards ticket where you can exercise political efficacy by doing what we do best – partying. Twenty bucks is a small price to pay for not being subjected to Dubya’s attempts at pronouncing complicated (and not so) words, pretentiously heroic carrier landings and environment eschewing agenda. Date: July 22. Time: 6pm doors. Place: Mighty (Utah/15th). Cover: $15 advance, $20 door, $50 VIP, More Info (JM)
