I
have a dream/one day/this nation will rise up/free at last…
Can you picture a sampled Dr. King's voice over a quiet, yet driving,
funky ass tech-house beat? Yeah I’ve heard that track before too but
it’s still great. Go to www.whisteria.com
and hit play. You can leave it on while you finish reading through the
newsletter.
It was nice to see how many promoters acknowledged this modern-day Prophet's
b-day in their flyers and e-mails -- Devotion and Whisteria being two.
Then some promoters like Kinkyfunk and The Pulse even moved their usual
party so they could throw it on Sunday night. I’m not naïve, I know
most people think of it as just a long weekend, but at least it’s had
some acknowledgment in the club scene. If you want to do the same, check
out some of these links and brush up on your peaceful King philosophy.
Start with the excerpts of his most beautiful and memorable words: "I
have a dream," "Let
freedom ring," and "Promised
land". Here's a couple more links: The
Full speech for "I have a dream" and The
King Center.
So
do you have a dream? Surface or deep, drunk or sober, let's hear what
you have to say. We'll publish the best ones. Send to I
have a dream.
Flyer
of the Week…
Yeah it’s a new thing we’re featuring. This week is the Compression
flyer. The illustration is by Joe Peterson and the design
is by Ian McDonell. Their flyers always look tight and consistent. You
just give a glance, and you know it’s Compression - that’s good marketing.
The D&B rooted Compression happens at the Cellar every Sunday. Don’t
miss DJ CRAZE this week: http://www.clubcompression.com/.
The featured Flyer of the Week is selected for the quality of design
and only design. If you'd like your flyer to be considered for our feature
- send an attachment of front and back here.
WMC…
How can it be time for that debaucherous Winter Music Conference Again?
Check out the site now and stay tuned to our next edition where we hook
you up with some resources to get down to (and get down in) Miami: http://www.wmcon.com.
One
More thing…
Before we go onto the pix, can I just air out a quick grievance? What
is this recent trend of not putting the price on the flyers? Is this
some sort of strategy to trick people into coming? “Free before 11pm”
is a dependent clause. You need to say something after that (i.e., “$5
after”).
Twelve
dollars pre-sale with no door price just does not cut it.
C’mon
people, let’s spread the love of knowledge and information. You can
send that knowledge and information by the way to
sf-events@nitevibe.com.

Thursday
Event: Ting
Venue: Place Pigalle
DJ's: Tomas, Dougie, Romanowski
Music: reggae, dancehall
Cover: $5
You have never heard a 'ting like 'dis. Overstand? (No, I'm not
impersonating Miss Cleo, I'm trying to explain to you that this is the
reggae-rocksteady-dirty-pool-bar you've been looking for.) Sounds of
Jamaica, 1969-82, specifically. Tomas and friends set up next to the
bar, while the dancefloor creates itself. Have a redstripe and remember
where it all came from.
Event: Soundcard
Venue: Hi-Fi Lounge
DJ's: Seven, Goki Chokar, Blake
Music: house
Cover: $5
Will you put the remote down already and go out? Show support for one of the scene's biggest supporters as you hear
some quality house and warm up to the weekend: DJ Seven's new gig at Hi Fi.
Event: Kit Kat
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Jellybear and Simon
Music:
house
Cover: Free
before 11pm, $12 after
Break me off a piece of this long running party filled with the
town's hottest party people and superstar DJs. With residents like this,
who needs guests? I have to warn you about one thing, though. Never
have I heard anyone say, "I just stopped by Kit Kat and then headed
home". Prepare for one of those nights.
Friday

Anniversary
Venue: Club Decibel
DJ's: DJ Donald Glaude (Seattle), Pat, Ben Davis,
Blake Mathis, Anton, Calvin Riley, Derek Martin
Music: house, downtempo in the lounge
Cover: $15
Donald Glaude is feeling you. I mean he gets up and gets into it!
How many DJs do you know who yell back at the audience and occasionally
join the dancers on the floor? His trademark interaction with the audience
coupled with his thumping energetic funky house and techno has him in
demand on the rave circuit with an almost cult following. You know who
else has a cult following? Paul Frank the designer who throws these
parties in conjunction with Twelve Monkeys. Now ya know.
Event: Whisteria
Venue: Hotel Ibiza Resort
DJ's: DJs Julius Papp, David Harness, Paul
Hemming, Dawn Of Sound, Consuelo, Mike Fuller, DJ Diggler, Luke Reichold,
Jayvi Velasco, Camilla, Re-Pete.
Music:
deep house, funky techno
Cover: $15 presale, $20 at the door
Remember... you went to this website earlier? These guys always
have at least four of the biggest names in San Francisco DJing. If you
want a quiet and intimate night, get a room at the Ibiza. If you want
to rave half-naked by the poolside till the next day, hang out at the
Whisteria party at Ibiza.
Event: Pepper
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Pete Avila, Blackstone
Music: deep house, garage
Cover: $5 before 10pm
Pepper at the Minna Gallery allows for no salt in your game. Make
your date think your into art and culture and all that crap by bringing
him/her to an art gallery. Little will he/she know you're really going
to a bangin' house and 2step event starring veteran house playa (and Bay Guardian Goldie Winner) Pete Avila
and Blackstone (Faith). Keep the charade going as famed graffiti artist (Doze) paints live
on a huge canvas throughout the night.
Event: Evolution Two Year Anniversary
Venue: Sno-Drift
DJ's: DJs David Harness, Keebo, Anita Lofton, Patrick Wilson,
Rick Gascon, DRS
Music: deep
house, hip hop
Cover: $15 before 11:30
Evolution
is celebrating its second anniversary with the Evolution DJs you know
and love, plus more. This party is the epitome of house but don't forget
the hip hop lounge, too. It all goes till 5am, so bring a Nutri-grain
bar or something.
Saturday
Event: Soundin' Off
Venue: Backflip
DJ's: MFR, Travis,
Tom Thump
Music: funky
breaks, house, hip hop
Cover: $10
It's The Transport Record Release party with DJ MFR and your funky
residents for President Travis of Loose Joints and Tom Thump the (Groove
Merchant guy, not the Thump Radio guy - this is getting confusing.)
Who stole whose name anyway? If you know the answer to this pressing
dilemma, please e-mail me at info@nitevibe.com. Thanks.
Event: Atmosfere
Venue: 111 Minna
DJ's: Neil Aline, Paul Craven, Said, Kaz
Music:
house
Cover: $15
before 11pm, $20 after
Neil Aline (Chez Music) has a residency at New York's Centro-fly where
all the fancy house kittens flock. Paul Craven (on the One) is our own
local hero who is known to infuse a jazzy sound into some deep house.
Check out the sounds and the sights (by Colin Manning) in the Atmosfere.
It's an all-around quality vibe.
Event: Qool
Venue: DNA
DJ's: DJs Spesh, Jonathan Ojeda, Scott Carelli,
Barefoot, Gil
Music: progressive house
Cover: $10
It's that Qool monthly again at DNA. These people have quite a
crew and a positive attitude at that. Maybe I can't listen to progressive
house all night but if you can, check out this party.
Sunday
Event: Devotion
Venue: The Endup
DJ's: Teddy Douglas
Music: house
Cover: $10
This is the night all the wannabe Devotion people come out because
they have no work and school on Monday. In my day, if you were really
devoted, you'd get to the Endup at last week's Devotion party and stay
till this week's! Amateurs! Anyway
Teddy Douglas of the Basement Boys is playing and, speaking of amateur,
this house DJ from Baltimore is NOT.
Event: Kinkyfunk
Venue: Club Six
DJ's: Taylor, Behrouz, Seamie
Music:
house, progressive
Cover: $15
Kinkyfunk
is a relatively new party at Six. It gets pretty packed in there and
the music is really good except at the very end when they play trance.
This is a special event because this guy Taylor (Ultra Platipus Records)
is returning from his worldwide tour with Crystal Method. John Digweed
has called Taylor "the true innovator of the progressive sound
on the west coast." aylor is joined by local Ten15 star Behrouz
(Release, Yoshitoshi) and Seamie (An Bodhran). I'll probably check it
out.
Event: Compression
Venue: The Cellar
DJ's: Craze, Storm, Aye-N,
Ivry, Audio Angel
Music: breaks, drum and bass,
hip hop
Cover: $5
Here
is another reason why I chose the Compression flyer for "Flyer
of the Week". It has the price on it! "5 Bones," it says.
Not only is that cute and useful but it's fuckin' cheap to see DJ Craze
-- 3x turntable champion and general wrecker of heads.
Event: Spundae
Venue: Ten15 Folsom
DJ's: Anthony Pappa, Spesh, Franky Boissy
Music:
progressive, deep house
Cover: $15
before 11pm, $20 after
Raise your hand if you've never been to Spundae. That's what I
thought. I'll describe the DJs instead. Anthony Pappa (Global Underground)
is big news. He will be here from the UK doing that breakbeat inflected
house, and trance thing. Spesh also on the progressive tip while Boissy
opens with the deep Naked Music style stuff. Impressive lineup.
Event: The Pulse
Venue: Space 550 Barneveld
DJ's: Chris the Rebel, Pleez, Andrew B.
(all from Wild 94.9) DJs Romeo, Mr. Jon P, Kinetix and BrianV
Music:
hip hop, breaks, soul, progressive
Cover: $15
Hey
when you said you wanted "freaky deaky cages with gogo dancers."
The promoters from Abzolut said -- Hell Yes! When you said you wanted
a massive "glow item giveaway" -again, the Abzolut promoters
said hell yes! but did you know this special edition of the Pulse party
is in honor of MLK Jr. and will feature hip-hop, R&B and club hits
in the main room with a lil progressive on the side. I don't think so.
