This Thursday, the preview fashion show for "Traffic: The 2nd Annual Urban Entertainment Convention" will be going off at Suite 181. Festival Neruda Honors Poet
From July 12th, through the 18th, Theater Artaud is honoring the 100th birthday of one of the 20th century's true renaissance men, Chilean poet, artist, diplomat, politician and humanitarian Pablo Neruda. Neruda's writings spanned numerous genres, including a strong friendship with Pablo Picasso; a fury of political poems during the Spanish Civil War; an array of 1000-page epic poems and a large accumulation of romantic works. His poetry has been awarded a Nobel Prize, been translated into over ten languages, and been used as a catalyst for social rebellion. The highlight of this event is the screening of a documentary film about the artist, "Pablo Neruda! Presente!," and the release of "The Essential Neruda,"  translated works. The film shows every day during the week, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Live music, dancing, poetry readings, lectures and much more will be ongoing to raise awareness of  Neruda's stories and South American history. SF Magazine Best of the Bay
San Francisco Magazine’s "Best of the Bay" event has delivered a spectacular party in the past and this year should be no exception. This posh SF rag has Bat Makumba serving up Brazilian Funk from their self-titled debut release which just won the California Music Award for Outstanding Latin Alternative Album. Also on the bill is the much-loved, DJ Laird who has been working the San Francisco club scene since 1990. Laird deals out funky house and psychedelic breakbeats and is sure to manipulate even the staunchest tuxedo into a groove. Also on board are members of SoVoSo, an a cappella ensemble combining jazz, gospel and R&B. The art world will be represented by Gen Art who cover fashion, film and basically the entertainment world at large. Open your five senses and take in this gala of massive proportions! Passion for Fashion Party
Passion for Fashion (& Other Groovy Things) is one big night with fifteen designers showcasing jewelry, clothing and eclectic accessories for head and home. But it's more than just a shopping bazaar as the drinks will be flowing from Mumm Napa and Mendocino Brewing Company and snacks are provided by Whole Foods. For your aural pleasure, DJ KFC will be cooking up kitchen fresh beats so you have a fun soundtrack to dance and shop by. This new weekly is a prime example, because when the Jah Warrior Shelter Hi-Fi crew hits the soundsystem at Milk, there's nothing left to do but move to the riddims being expertly selected by these wax crusaders. Lifting his moniker from the 1970's private eye movie, which produced a notorious Marvin Gaye-led soundtrack, Trouble Man drops into Grant & Green Wednesdays to spin old school funk and soul hits. The drink specials and easy going atmosphere make this a perfect first stop when starting off a mid-week venture into the always lively North Beach/Broadway area. (IA)

Bastille Day is coming and you can’t bluff your way through a profound conversation about French beats. So, check out Rosewood’s L'Originale on Wednesday nights. This extremely eclectic and diversified crowd is friendly and inviting. Herve spins first and produces some very mellow grooves to mingle by. Daymeetrius picks up the pace a tad which segues into Jerry Ross’s atmosphere changing, up beat, get-on-the-floor set. Dig the crowd and get it on at L’Oringinale. (RW)

Since he began composing at age 5 on a piano, dj Fresh's leaps and bounds to dnb figurehead status have kept technological advancement on its toes. Fellow dnb veteran, Hive, who's productions reside in the record boxes of every renowned dnb dj, joins Fresh (Bad Company), A:dubl, Frogger, and Aaron Jae at 1015 this Friday. Hit it up early, because when dnb and breaks team up, the bass alone will be hard for anyone at all in SoMa to ignore. (DKD)

Since the 70's, Jamaica's own Barrington Levy has been upholding the roots of reggae with his immediately recognizable voice that balances securely between reggae and dancehall. As the number one singer of all time in Jamaica, Levy is considered to be the first original singer of the dancehall era (with classic songs such as "Under Mi Sensi"). Tonight's live performance is for the lovers of reggae who should be more than satisfied when this talented singer touches the mic. (JC)

Dances of Ecstasy, a film by Michelle Mahrer and Nicole Ma, studies and documents dance from 5 continents and trys to portray "the universal experience where rhythm and dance unite us." Observe Whirling Dervishes, Nigerian priestesses and Shaman healers showcase some of their original trance moves complete with visual effects. Show is at 8pm. (IA)

Fresh off a Vintage 415 party at Mezzanine, DJ AM will now move the beautiful folks to the W Hotel just down the block. A classic blend of hip-hop at a posh spot spell out the Vintage 415 recipe for a damn good time. DJ AM’s blend will grab everyone at some point during the evening and if you don’t believe it, check out his resume. He’s worked parties from the Spider Man 2 Premier and Maxium Magazine’s Hot 100 Party in Vegas to Club Lotus in NY and Club Skin at The Palms. Like I said, a damn good time. (RW)

The UK's "Evil" Eddie Richards is in town, and his function seems nothing less than feeding crowds full of the acid sounds and electro synths, that have everyone referring to him as the godfather of tech house. Vancouver's Jay Tripwire has played his version of tech house at premier clubs around the world and on highly renowned labels, so be ready to groove to a naughty bassline or twenty. With Adnan, Tribal Souls, and Hydrophonic in the mix, don't be surprised if Saturday has you hung out to dry. (DKD)

Every 2nd Friday you can count on SF-Vibe, Funk Divas and Mayonnaise collectives to raise the temperature inside Sublounge a few degrees. An underground-hip location has been voted as Best Dance Music Club by SF Bay Guardian and also features retro arcades and airplane seats for those who are dance challenged. It’s a bit out of the way but is a must for discerning house head. (JM)

Jill Scott always knew she could write.  She started her career by reading her poetry to audiences in Philly. She also penned the lyrics to "You Got Me" which won the Roots a Grammy. Her own soulful singing voice, has earned her comparisons to Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill and a platinum debut record. Her songs are soulful and funky while remaining introspective by staying true to her poetry roots. If you have never seen this soul diva live, you gotta go! (DD)

At the hippest venue in town, revelers will be treated to the cool house sounds of Sen-Sei and David Coleman. The duo, known for their phenomenal live sets, joined forces in 1996 to form the record label, Kinetic Grooves. Since then, they have had residencies throughout the city while staying busy in the studio producing sounds that are embraced world-wide. Also, djs Rouzben and Rooz will be throwing out soulful house grooves, making this a party not to be missed. (KW)

For Chris Annibell, aka Dj Osiris, rhythm and melody are the foundation from which to create beautiful music. This seasoned dj/producer/musician fuses these basic fundamentals with big beats that are both worldly and infectious. His collaborations with Turntables On The Hudson Dj Nickodemus have lead to successful dancefloor fillers for the Turntables on the Hudson series as well as Giant Step Records among others. His own label Afrokinetic, is deeply rooted in Afro-rhythm beats and should provide a good indication of what's in store for the evening. The local DJ support is not to shabby either! (JC)

For one night the venue will be remodeled with a festive touch – creative decorations, go-go dancers and vibrant fire dancers will whisk you away to the sounds of groovy house beats from premiere French DJs. Expect a Revolution CD giveaway, a latest creation from Frenchy le Freak filled with newest European tracks. (JM)

All the best Bay Area dancehall Djs battle it out armed only with crates of records and 45's. It will be a dancehall & reggae event of epic proportions so don't sleep! Frisky Rhythm is Ruby Skye's only monthly event that combines its usual house with a splash of hip-hop. This week, Miami dj, Juan Mejia, joins the mix with Ruby Skye regulars Pat Allen and Foley. Juan Mejia is known for heating up the dance floors of South Beach, Miami by blending house beats with hip-hop, which should pair nicely with Pat Allen's talent of blending old school and house in the main room. Foley's does a bit of everything in the Jungle Room. Loveworks presents Flowerpower with three incredible Bay Area locals: Solar, Matt Valenz and the Nitevibe Dreamteamer, David Harness. It's a house extravaganza but don't be alarmed. These three will be cross pollinating with several genres from electro and garage to funk and hip-hop. This is not your commercial house night. (JP)

Toph One's epic hip-hop party, Strawberry is sure to be as juicy as ever. As the only hip-hop party featured at the End-up, this event always brings fans from far and wide who like to get down and freak on the dance floor. One of many highlights for this event will be emcee Prozack performing live, as well as Deep Dickollective. Toph One, Sake 1 and Manny Black will be pulling out all your favorite party anthems from deep in the crates. (JP)

Those who have been lucky to experience the original Love Parade in Berlin can never forget this wildest techno gathering that drew 1.5 million people last year; Mardi Gras and Halloween pale in comparison with this awe-striking celebration. Tech-On crew wants to ensure that idm, electro and minimal are well represented in SF’s version of Love Parade in October and are fundraising for a float – that means that donations are appreciated. It’s time for fun in the sun again at San Francisco’s summer mega party, 2nd Sunday. All afternoon and into the evening, the massive crowd will be treated to some of the best house grooves from a (near) Dreamteam of djs, blaring from two levels at Kelly’s Mission Rock. The huge dance floors, one extending out over the bay, are packed from the time the doors open. The vibe here is about enjoying the hot sun of summer, the best sounds around, along with the friendliest crowd in the city. (KW)

Dub Mission is proud to bring to the stage for the first time this unique dub outfit hailing from the state of Colorado known as Heavyweight Dub Champion. Since 1997, HDC has been creating a eclectic brand of dub using live audio channels, turntables, horns, various effects and vocalists/MC's. Their sound is deeply rooted in dub reggae scattered with layers of hip-hop, jungle and global beats. Tonight's Dub Mission debut performance from HDC will entertain listeners with a memorable live set that is a slightly heavier shade from just your basic dub. Dj Sep supports. (JC)

The Meters formed in 1967 and have mined and refined the sound we now call funk. They gathered their sound and their band members from New Orleans and have since put out 16 albums. This funk collective has worked with the likes of The Rolling Stones and Dr. John and has been covered by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Grateful Dead and Widespread Panic. The original band broke up in 1979 but reformed in 1994 as The Funky Meters. If you are into George Clinton and Dr. John, the slippery bass line and twanging riff of the legendary Funky Meters is a must. (RW)
