Check out the biggest 4th of July pre-party in the city with booths and music stretching from the Aquatic Park to Pier 39. Pop rock band Taming Ingrid starts the music at 11am, followed by the cover band UnAuthorized Rolling Stones, and finally the 10-person show and wide swing of musical genre that is David Martin's House Party will be keeping the crowds entertained until the fireworks show begins around 9:30 p.m. You can't beat the free admission, and the best aspect of any outdoor party is that it breaks in time for you to make it back out to the late-night spots and keep on celebrating the long weekend. Fillmore Street Jazz Festival
Take a little break from 4-4 beats in the dark and listen to American jazz classics in the daylight at the Fillmore Jazz Festival. It's the biggest free jazz celebration on the West Coast, where you'll find multiple stages of performers playing the music of legends such as Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane and original compositions sweetening the summer air 2 days in a row. Walk around and you'll also find artwork and pottery on display from hundreds of local artists and a ton of international food options. Unseen Works & Keepintime
Punch Gallery presents a new film and photography work from renowned LA musicological/cultural/political artists B+ and Eric Coleman. Unseen Works includes two photography exhibits. The first from Coleman focuses on simple subjects and how they gain importance and meaning when photographed. "Somehow registering the formal arrangement of clothes and linen on a washing line speaks to the core of my practice, " the artist said. The second exhibit by B+ includes images taken while in Florida on assignment for Tokion magazine and concentrates on the democratic collapse that occurred when Bush became president despite Gore having more votes. The final exhibit is a film called "Keepintime: A Live Recording" featuring the legendary drummers Earl Palmer, Paul Humphrey, James Gadson, Roy Porter, contrasting with modern greats like with DJ's Babu, J.Rocc, NuMark, Madlib, Shortcut, and Cut Chemist performing live in front of 1100 people at the El Rey in Los Angeles. The Red Bull Music Academy is a unique environment where musical
innovators shed light on the history, the motivations and the technology behind the tunes that you love. Each year a group of participants are selected from a diverse range of musical landscapes, cultures and skill sets. They are mixed together to jam experiences over two fortnight-long sessions, and in 2004, the location will be Rome, Italy. Applications must be postmarked by July 3rd, 2004.

With a new record, “The Pretty Toney Album” out in stores, Ghostface Killah (aka Tony Starks, aka Ironman) will grace the presence of The Fillmore this Tuesday. This fraction of the Wu-Tang Clan is armed with his first new material since his last album “Bulletproof Wallets” three years ago. This is Killah’s fourth solo release and the Wu-Tang member says on his website that “The Pretty Toney Album” is “something real vintage and out of the ordinary, best believe that shit gonna stand out.” No doubt Mr. Starks, do doubt. Christmas is early this year because Mark Farina and Charles Feelgood are doing a free set at Ruby Skye. Substituting for Santa, Mark has roots in deep Chicago sound, hip-hop mixes and his own brand of mushroom jazz. East Coast native Feelgood is acclaimed for bringing funky disco house to Baltimore/DC area and has toured extensively with Scooter and Lavelle - a San Diego pair that mashes together hard trance, prog and hip-hop turntablism. Who else but Atmosfere would be hot enough to throw the closing event for the Yerba Buena exhibit entitled Black President:The Art and Legacy of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti? This party also celebrates the book (Fela:From West Africa to West Broadway) by Trevor Schoonmaker, curator of the Black President exhibition. The music lineup is just as impressive as the theme as DJ Jerome Sydenham joins Soji Odukgbe on guitar and Rasaki Aladokun on percussion for an underground spiritual jam session which combines deep house grooves with Afrobeat. DJ Said is also on the beat (as well as running the show) so be prepared to dance. (JP)

Celebrate your independence, champagne flute in hand with a live performance by Iio, an NYC duo highly distinguished by their freedom from musical classification. You may remember the tracks "Rapture" and "At The End" that drove every dance floor wild, or the several Iio works remixed by top djs such as Pete Tong. The combination of Nadia's sinfully beautiful vocals and poetry, and Markus Hoser's versatile, genre-spanning sound, is what makes Iio a pioneer of a genre we'll call Poetica. (DKD)

Fresco presents John Arnold from Detroit's ultra-hip brokenbeat scene and DJ John Beltran of Ubiquity fame this Friday at Milk. The dance floor will no doubt be packed as these two masters of worldbeat-flavored-house transport us to other lands and funkier dimensions. Resident DJ Hakobo is also in the mix to surprise you with a few jazz and hip-hop tracks, and guest saxophonist, Kenny Brooks may also lend some notes. This party is sure to be bursting with flavor! Don't miss this extra slammin' edition of Legends, as the world-famous Jesse Saunders goes through his Top 100 songs. Expect to hear super dance floor delights like Prince's 1999 to electronic classics like Kraftwerk's numbers. Of course Jesse's own hit "On and On" will be in the mix since its attributed with being the very first house track. You'll hear all your favorites and a few surprises but the result is the same: dance floor madness till 4am! (JP)

This new monthly event devoted to serious musical boundary-hopping, from booty rock to electro house feature DJs that can actually mix, and with style and finesse I might add. A few of my personal fave Djs dig deep in the crates playing whatever they damn well please making for a hot night with a ton of surprises. (JP)

Along with releases/remixes on "Force Tracks" ,"BPitch Control", "Context", and his own platform, "Proptronix," Safety Scissors is now getting the recognition he deserves. Tearing down SF tonight is the amazing triple NYC threat that is AK1200, Dara and Dieselboy, with MC J Messinian (hailing from Philly) showing is lyrical strife on the mic. Celebrating the release of Dieselboy's the "Dungeon Master's Guide" and Dara's "The Antidote", the deep and dark reaches of Dieselboys dnb landscape contrasts nicely with Dara's sweeping jungle laced with drums grooves. AK1200 shoots out the competition with his famous attack-style dnb that should increase the causalities on the dancefloor. So watch out as these boys pump you lucky junglists all over 550! (GR)
